Gestational Sac and Yolk Sac measuring small at 6 weeks

Hi,

So I went for a "reassurance" scan yesterday and was told there was no baby found today. Also told my measurements are VERY small for 6 weeks.

Here are my measurements:
Gestational Sac (mean): 6.0mm
Gestational Sac Volume: 0.1ml
Yolk Sac (mean): 2.2mm

What do you think? Is there a chance things could change in 10 days (my next scan)?

Hi,

I am in a very similar situation myself. I am sorry you are going through this awful wait too.

I had a scan at exactly 6 weeks on 28 Feb and they also found a small gestational sac of 5.7mm but it was completely empty.

I went back on 7 March (7 weeks) and it had grown to 10mm and now there is a yolk sac and tiny fetal pole 2.2mm with possible FH activity but too uncertain to say for sure.

Are you very certain of your dates? I am, I was tracking and temping.

Did you have HCG tested?

I now have to wait another week for repeat scan.

The wait is torturous, I’m not dealing very well with it!! I hope everything works out for you.

Look after yourself ❤️

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's a horrible situation to be in. I've been crying all weekend :(

Yes, my periods are regular and I tested my ovulation too. Although my LH remained high for a week.

I was told if my cycles are regular then it's likely I've miscarried.

Are your cycles normally regular? It's positive the sac has grown and seen a feral pole. I'm sure you'll be fine :)

Do you have any symptoms? Mine a very very mild which makes me think it is bad news.

It’s just such a horrendous place this limbo of waiting and not knowing isn’t it.

Your LH remaining high for a week sounds really positive, as you could have ovulated a week later. Fingers crossed!

I don’t have regular cycles, but I have extremely short cycles and am diagnosed with primary ovarian insufficiency (early menopause, but with fluctuating ovarian activity) and was on cyclical HRT.

I do track and temp though and this cycle ovulation was confirmed on CD 8 (super early) and I got my first positive on CD 17. So there’s no way I could be actually behind on my dates.

I actually had a small bleed at 5w5d, hence the scan at 6w. All bleeding had stopped by the time I had the first scan though.

I also had an absolutely dire HCG rise between the bleed and the scan so I was totally surprised to see growth and a fetal pole at the second scan. I expected it would be a blighted ovum.

Symptom wise, not much. A little nausea and fluctuating sore boobs. I’ve had some quite painful cramps and every time I do I’m expecting to see blood.

I’m swinging wildly between blind hope and absolute despair at the moment.

When is your next scan? I really hope it’s all ok and I think your LH surge being so long is a really good sign that you just ovulated late.

I know this doesn’t help the OP, but for the sake of other posters please please defer a reassurance scan until 7 weeks (the national recommendation). Before this there is a high chance that you will not be reassured, but finish up not knowing.
obviously if there is pain and there are concerns about an ectopic then this doesn’t apply.

I agree with your point about not going for reassurance scans. It's did the complete opposite for me. But obviously go if you experience bleeding or pain.

My dr told me if your periods are irregular then it's likely you've got your dates wrong but if they are regular then it's likely to be a miscarriage. So if your cycles are irregular and baby is growing then I think you've just got your dates wrong.

I think I ovulated when I think I did (8th Feb). After that my LH remained high for a week then dipped and spiked again. I got my first positive on (19th Feb). Im not sure how it all works as I'm new to trying to conceive.

The Dr said I'm measuring small for 6 weeks which is really worrying me.

My follow up scan is with the NHS on 19th March. I'm hoping for good news! No bleeding so far so feeling hopeful.

So with dating they use a typical 28 day cycle with ovulation assumed to be on CD 14.

If you are sure of when you ovulated (8th Feb) you would start counting from 25th Jan for the most accurate date, assuming your LMP might be different to that date. Not everyone has 28 cycles.

So that would make you 6w3d today. Not sure when you had your scan, but I think they have a margin of +/- 5 days either side for measurements.

I’m very confident of my ovulation date as I temp (3 x raised temps confirms ovulation) so I know I ovulated way early, CD 8. So if I went by my LMP I would only be 6w4d. But I know that isn’t correct because I had a positive test on CD 17 (just after most people with a 28 day cycle would be ovulating!).

Knowing my ovulation date and positive test date, the absolute earliest I could possibly be is 7w3d today. Which really doesn’t look good with my measurements!

Im back for a third scan on 14th March. Wishing you all the good luck for yours!

25th Jan was the first day of my last period. I was told my measurements are 3 weeks behind. At least if it was spot on measured at 6 weeks but empty there some hope. So it doesn't look good either. But I am praying things change.

All the best. I am sure you'll be fine! Xx

Three weeks behind? I’m pretty sure that a 6mm sac is around 5ish weeks.

I actually booked a last minute private scan today as I couldn’t cope with not knowing anymore. It wasn’t good news for me I’m afraid. But I’m relieved that I know for sure now.

Everything crossed for a different outcome for you. X

Kateeeeeee · 11/03/2025 20:46

Yh the Dr said it's very small. No idea in what way.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Sending baby dust your way xxxx

Hi OP,

what was your outcome if you don’t mind me asking?
