No embryo at 8 week scan

I went for a private early scan today at 8 weeks. My NHS 12 week scan is booked for a Monday morning, so I figured I’d like to know if there were any obvious issues in my own time, rather than right at the start of a week of work. This would be our second child and I just had a bad feeling. The scan showed a yolk sac, but no embryo. The sonographer dated me at 6 weeks, but said I needed a referral to EPU from my gp, as I’m certain of conception date. She’s sent an email to my gp with the findings. She wasn’t particularly helpful in explaining next steps, but the local EPU only really seems to take referrals once you’re actively miscarrying. Has anybody else been referred by a private scanning company? What happened next for you?

@JBeanGarden I'm sorry for what you're going through. I had a referral from a private scanning place to my EPU last summer as the heart rate was really slow and basically meant the pregnancy wasn't going to last.
The EPU scanned me a few days later, still a heartbeat there but slowed growth, and then scanned me after a further week at which point the heart had stopped and I had surgical management. They should see you as there is clearly something off with the scan...

Really sorry you're going through this. I recently had a private 8 week scan which detected a 'vanishing twin' (one embryo the correct size with heartbeat, but the second embryo was sized at 6 weeks with no heartbeat). Sonographer said that met the criteria for her to refer to NHS - I was emailed a copy of the comprehensive report she sent to NHS EPU, and they contacted me within 24 hours. Had the private scan on the Wed and NHS scan on the Fri. Was very impressed by the whole process. NHS scan confirmed private scan - but they explained that they can't use results of private scans within NHS so that's why they do their own. My GP wasn't involved at all. Perhaps the process differs by area?

Thank you for your replies. So sorry it happened to you too.
I guess it’s just a different process. I just hate the not knowing and the fact it’s a bank holiday weekend makes it worse. I have some huge work commitments coming up which are adding to my stress.

In case anybody is interested, it’s now Wednesday and I am still waiting to hear from the EPU after my scan on Saturday. The GP made the referral first thing on Tuesday. I’m in a horrible limbo where I can’t focus and am not at work, but also am not actively miscarrying. It’s mental torture. I just want to know what they plan to do, so I can start concentrating on getting back to normal life.
