A positive MVA experience

Before I chose to have an MVA to manage my miscarriage I tried to read as many MCA experiences as I could so I felt a little more prepared. So, I wanted to share what was a pretty positive experience for me this afternoon. I definitely feel lucky given some of the stories I’ve read and I’m sure it’s different for everyone but it really was ok.

The procedure started like any smear test with a speculum and then I had two local anaesthetic injections. I hardly felt these and they used an anaesthetic gel just beforehand to help with any pain.

The doctor then changed the speculum to fit my uterus and I genuinely didn’t even realise the procedure had then started I thought they were still sorting the speculum I really couldn’t feel anything more than mild discomfort.

The doctor did two initial bursts of suction and it was only on the final burst that I had some pain and cramping but it was short and manageable. It was all over so so much quicker than I thought it would.

My procedure was at 3.10pm. I arrived at 1.30pm for prep and to take a variety of medicines and I left the hospital at 4.10pm. I’ve had quite intense cramping and bleeding over the last couple of hours since the procedure but they said the cramps will likely only last the rest of the day.

Some of the things that helped me (I know it might not work for everyone) in case you’re able to ask for any of this:

  • The doctor explained what she was doing and kept me updated on how long was left as she went through
  • There were 4 people in the room which I thought would be overwhelming but actually was a great distraction
  • The Dr and nurses talked to me about everything and anything which completely took my mind off everything and stopped me noticing any pain
  • I had one AirPod in and listened to familiar music in the background
  • I had loads of options in case I wanted to use them - gas & air was available although I didn’t need it, I had my phone with me and I could have gone on this or watched something, my partner was allowed into the room although I decided to go alone as I thought I’d cope better and be a bit stronger

Happy to share any more detail at all about the procedure or answer any questions.

I hope that anyone who chooses this route has a similar experience. Sending love to all going through this x
