Period after surgery for MMC

I'm 6 and a half weeks post surgery for my MMC and 13dpo. Today when I wiped there was red blood so I thought well that's good my first period is finally returning. However I haven't really had much since. I had mucus mixed with a bit of blood and just light pink when I wiped. I expected a full on heavy period as I also didn't really bleed after the procedure. I'm now really paranoid about Ashermans. Is there anyone else who had the same kind of thing with their first period? I'm googling all sorts and just had a cry thinking the worst.

@jellyfish2 I had a short period of red blood on wiping post miscarriage, which stopped, and then a couple of weeks break before my period came back fully. Since that period everything then seemed back on track. Hopefully that will be the case for you...

It's so easy to go to the worst case scenario but remember the most likely scenario is just that your body needs some time.

Just realised my comment wasn't so helpful as I didn't end up having a D&C as my body had other plans.

However, Ashermans is still a less likely scenario than your body just leveling out. I can understand the worry though. Hopefully someone with a closer experience to yours will be along to provide more reassurance soon

Hello,
I had a MMC which results in a MVA on 16th Feb. 3 weeks after I had a negative pregnancy test. 3weeks 3 days after I started to bleed- I do think this was my period but more hormonal and linked to MMC. 2 weeks on I’m currently ovulating (well, according to the strips and clear blue) we are DTD in the hope we will get BFP however I think I will then get my first proper period in two week.

I was the same as you thinking the worst as the bleeding I had was ridiculously light and very intermittent and at the time I was very upset.

I know our timings are different but maybe it is just our bodies settling back down? Xx

Because the period felt so off I took a pregnancy test and it had a faint positive. So I'm not sure what's going on, if it'll end up being a chemical or not. It's still there constantly when I wipe and there's some in the pad but it's not heavy like a period or soaking through. I'll need to keep testing to see if it gets darker. And of course then worried about ectopic. Implantation seems late at 13dpo and it was negative the day before. I feel all over the place with worry.

Maybe call EPU? Tentative congratulations on BFP!!

I'll wait a couple of days and see if I get a stronger line as there's nothing they can do anyway I don't think. Thanks but I'm not feeling hopeful x

@MerryBrickHelper the tests are negative now but someone else said they had a false positive on a frer. How long did your bleeding last? Bleeding has stopped and it was only two days which isn't like what my period was pre MC at all. I'm just so confused as to whether or not it was a CP and if epu even keep tabs on these. I've phoned and left a message to ask as I'm just worried going forward incase no future pregnancies stick because of the surgery.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

Just to reassure you - I had multiple miscarriages (11) and had surgical management for most of them.

I still had four live babies as well.

I think you may well be having a chemical pregnancy at the moment. It's hard to tell. The other possibility is that this is implantation bleeding in a viable pregnancy.

You'll know over the next few days. It's horrible to lose a baby but most women who do so, end up having a healthy pregnancy afterwards.

@TheShellBeach oh my goodness 11 that is awful, I'm so so sorry. Did you get to the bottom of why that happened to you?
I'm thinking I should probably wait for my period to come next time but it's so hard when you just want to be pregnant again and I feel like noone understands. It feels so long to wait (I know it isn't but it's the unknown I guess).

I never found out why I'd lost so many babies. They were all at different times, too. One at 14 weeks, another at 12 weeks, lots at 8 - 9 weeks, a few at 6 weeks and some were chemical pregnancies.
One was a molar pregnancy, another was thought to be ectopic (but turned out not to be when I was under anaesthetic).

I think I was just very unlucky.

But I had four healthy pregnancies, too. So I think it's very likely that you will, too.

@TheShellBeach thank you for sharing, that must've been so difficult. I just didn't expect a CP straight after a missed miscarriage. I have one child so I'm very lucky but really thought giving him a sibling would be as smooth sailing as it was with him.

I had two losses before DD1, then another three before DS1.

You'll get there!

Hello, my bleeding lasted two days and then after that it was only there when I wiped. The two day bleeding was ridiculously light- the pads were needed but could have easily not! It’s just all just rubbish after TTC for two years, we are due to start IVF in May so going to give it two more cycles and then if not, IVF will hopefully be my way to becoming a mum!

How are you getting on, @jellyfish2?

Are you tracking BBT? I myself always found that really helpful in figuring out my cycles.

Hi @TheShellBeach I'm ok thanks, bleeding has stopped now so it was only maybe 2 and a half days worth and not very heavy. How are you getting on?
I don't track BBT as I do shift work so I don't think it would be very accurate?

Hang in their OP! I started a similar thread after my SMM as I was freaking out. I had the exact same as you and then maybe a few days to a week later I had a light period (never the full on gush that a lot of women have) The next month, back to normal period and now I’m pregnant again :). My light period was around week 8 if I remember correctly :-/

TheShellBeach · 28/03/2024 12:11

I think, as you've had a negative test now, that you should be counting this bleeding as day one of a new cycle, @jellyfish2.

I'm fine, thank you for asking. I'm well past the age of conceiving now, but I always look on this board because of my past experiences.

Thank you @DisorganisedMummyTurningOrgnaised it's reassuring to know. Huge congratulations on your pregnancy! I love to hear success stories after suffering a loss and even moreso after SMM as I think googling can convince you it'll make you infertile! How soon after your SMM did you fall pregnant if you don't mind me asking?

@TheShellBeach thank you so much for checking in, especially when those days are in the past for you. It's very kind. I think speaking to other ladies that have been in a similar position to me has really helped. Such a lovely community on here.

I left it two or three periods and then tried. When I say “tried” I mean we only had sex in the fertile window once, and that was close to one of the ends (I.e. low probability). Three of my gynaecologists told me that straight after a miscarriage you’re super fertile. They suggested that if you’re up for it emotionally, to try again as soon as possible (one said straight away, the other said let one period pass so that you know your dates better). We needed some time and space, so even when we tried, it wasn’t like the first time (we had to try for ages to get pregnant the first time so it was emotional turmoil when it ended in a miscarriage).

@jellyfish2 I got pregnant in my first cycle after SMM.

And another time, it was my second cycle.

Hi OP. Just want to give you a rundown from what I remember from my MMC and after.

Had a MMC and advised to have surgical management.

Had a nurse who would bring me back regularly for hCG checks which eventually started to slow down with the dropping so I pushed for a scan (did you get your hCG checked or a negative pregnancy test at all)

Had a check where they said it was fine. But called back by a specialist and found there was RPOC.

Second D&C

No period returned. Huge panic, worried about Asherman's etc. In a huge downward spiral about this (during lockdown)

2-3 months later (I think, but about 4/5 months from first surgery) period returns.

Within 1-3 months of that, not entirely sure, got pregnant for all of 3 or 4 days and then a CP.

Got pregnant on my next ovulation and that was a healthy successful baby.

Had another successful pregnancy since.

Hopefully something from my history may help your current situation.

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!

@TheShellBeach that's interesting you got pregnant immediately, with the suspected chemical I've just presumed the lining wasn't thick enough as yet but I don't really know how it all works.

@DisorganisedMummyTurningOrgnaised I'm glad to hear it's all worked out for you now. It's not an easy road!
