Signs of a complete miscarriage?

Bb542 · 26/02/2024 21:48

Hi everyone,

I found out a week ago today that my pregnancy had stopped progressing. I was 7 weeks. I've been bleeding now for about 9 days. It's not overly heavy, mostly just coming out any time I use the toilet and a tiny bit on a pad during the day. It's not showing any signs of stopping though.

Did anyone else experience this? I've no idea if the sac has passed or if it's still there (it was still there at my appointment last week), but I thought I would've stopped bleeding at this point. I've another appointment at the EPU this week. If I'm still bleeding by then, does anyone know what they might suggest? It'll have been nearly 2 weeks since the bleeding started by then.

I'm extremely tired and have been a bit dizzy today. Not sure if this is connected to the miscarriage.

Thanks for your help 😊

I'm sorry you are going through this. I found that each MC was different in terms of bleeding, time to pass etc. If this your 1st loss? I read a great deal and majority of MC's will pass naturally with time, but sometimes take 2 or more cycles to do so. I would assume at your EPU checkup, they will do a scan, and if retained products are seen, offer meds to induce a medical MC.

Sorry if TMI, but blood clots will dissolve in water, whereas pregnancy products will not. This site might be helpful as they have a helpline too. This isn't our fault OP, you are never alone and nothing you did caused this ❤

Thank you so much for your reply. Strangely, I just went to the bathroom and passed the tiniest bit of weird tissue which could be part of the sac or lining? I've a headache and dizziness tonight too so that could be why I'm getting this symptoms. Even though I've known about the miscarriage for about a week now, I feel incredibly sad tonight thinking it's going to pass soon 😔

@Bb542 so sorry for your loss, I’ve had 2 mc between 6/7 weeks, my most recent was 4 weeks ago. Both I passed naturally within 2 weeks. With my recent one I had the same concerns as you as didn’t seem to pass anything more solid than clots for a while , but did pass a lump that was solid and then everything tailed off. I was told that a couple of weeks bleeding was normal but I also had a scan after a week that confirmed everything had gone so was just waiting for the bleeding to stop while knowing it was complete. It may be worth seeing if EPU will see you to confirm it’s all passed naturally?

its completely understandable to be feeling sad- the trauma and grief of it being completely over is awful. Thinking of you my love, xxxx

I'm so sorry that your going through this and i can only speak from my experience and I've only had the one miscarriage but I was 10 weeks when I had a scan that showed that my baby had stopped growing at around 6 weeks. I then started spotting a little over a week later which lasted for 5 days, on the 5th day I started with lower tummy pains on the evening and as soon as I stood up it (sorry for tmi) gushed out and I passed alot of different size tissue, this continued for about 4 hours and I spent the majority of the time on the bathroom floor as it was just easier, so at this point it was very obvious I was having the complete miscarriage. After that I continued to spot on and off for a couple of weeks. I'm not sure if this is what everyone experiences during a miscarriage or if its because I was almost 12 weeks by the time I'd had it but there was so much more then I was expecting and I don't feel like epau really prepared me for it.

Hi lovely, so sorry you’re going through this 😔
We found out at our 12 week scan on Thursday that baby had stopped developing at 8+4 and I miscarried on Saturday. I had been bleeding since Monday, so 6 days of bleeding before it properly kicked off.
From my experience you definitely know when the sac has passed (it was fairly sizeable and took a while to come out) but obviously everyone’s experience is different.
Please keep an eye on the headaches and dizziness, keep yourself hydrated and be gentle with yourself.
I hope everything is over for you soon, the waiting is torture xx

Thank you all so, so much for your replies and I'm also so sorry that you have all been through such hard times. Sending you all so much love ❤️

I've an appointment later this week with my EPU where I'll have another scan and they'll confirm what's happening. Just want my period to come so I can focus on trying again 😔

@MrsB2019x how are you doing now? I know how you're feeling so I'm here if you ever need to talk ❤️

@Lemonyfire @TiredMum30 so sorry you've both been through loss. Do you mind if I ask if it took long for your period to come back after your losses?

@Bb542 my first one took around 5 weeks but I have longer cycles anyway. This time I’m nearly 5 weeks in and I just got a pos opk a couple of days ago with no sign of my period.

last time I waited a cycle to ttc but this time we decided to not wait for my period. This pregnancy took over 18 months to conceive and I’m 36 and because it was early, and completed naturally I felt it may be doable, but I’ve been anxious about not waiting too!

So sorry to see that your going through this. My first mc happened naturally, i was spotting for around a week and then a gush of blood and clots came out and then it slowed down after 2 weeks, i went to EPU and they had said in the first week of the blood and tissue that the sack was slowly passing and coming away in little bits but i'll know when its all passed because the bleeding will slow down.
I then carried on bleeding like a normal period not heavy but not light just like an inbetween period for 6 weeks before i stopped for 2 weeks and then i had a normal period.
Good luck to you OP, its painful and you do get all sorts of symptoms. I went drip white during mine i had headache, exhausted, sick but when i passed i felt like a brand new woman sadly.
You've got this. Sending you so much love 💐 x

Im so sorry.
i had a very early miscarriage over Xmas (5 weeks) it was like a longer heavy period. It lasted about 9 days. My next period was very shorts

hopefully all of yours has passed.
im quite irregular so it took 27 days from
tje beginning of the bleeding to ovulate again (yes, I did tests)
I’m so sorry again xx

I’m so sorry for your loss. I had a missed miscarriage - discovered at my 12 week scan, baby had probably died around the 8 week mark. I only had slight spotting for a good few days afterwards and I then opted to have surgical removal as I couldn’t bear waiting around for things to happen when it didn’t seem like much was going to and got all worried about infection (obviously wasn’t in the best state of mind - we were going through ivf and it was all just too much at the time). I’m not sure what they suggest now as this was a few years ago. Take medical advice and do what is right for you. Look after yourself, it’s an awful thing to go through. Sending love x

DSD9472 · 27/02/2024 17:00

To follow on from my earlier reply, you asked how long before periods started after MC.

MC at 12 weeks with medical management. I bled for 2mths before finally passing a retained product. Bleeding stopped then period started a week later. It was the heaviest period I've ever had and almost as heavy as the original MC. It took almost 3mths for my periods to return to normal. I had no idea this length of bleeding was abnormal and wasn't advised to re-do a pregnancy test!

MC at 7 weeks- bled for a week and period started exactly a month after the MC started. Periods were as regular and normal as before the MC.

MC at 9 weeks- bleed just over a week and period started just over a month later. Also returned to regular cycles afterwards.

At he EPU, they might scan you. IF there is a retained product, they might take a wait and see option. Maybe leaving it another week or 2 and suggest you do a pregnancy test. OR, they might offer to give you medical management to help contract the uterus. Be guided by their suggestions, but if you do have questions, feel free to ask.

so sorry for your loss. It's a horrible thing to go through.

Everyone's different so it's hard to say whether you've completely passed it. It's likely you have. I've had a few early mcs and in those cases it was mainly blood and small clots, which gave way to just period-level bleeding for a week or so.

For reference, my two MMCs that began at 13 weeks (although the babies always measured smaller) were a very different experience for me - waves of agonising contractions, many hours of passing large clots etc, and I saw the sac and some foetal tissue but afaik neither of mine came out in one piece or if one did I lost it to the toilet.

I'm concerned about you feeling dizzy, I felt very dizzy and nauseous and passed out because of the blood loss.
Ended up being given blood and an emergency d&c with a 3 day hospital stay.

Call 111 if the dizziness persists.
I'm very sorry for your loss.

Bb542 · 27/02/2024 23:01

Thanks all so much for your replies. I genuinely really, really appreciate them.

I'm feeling a bit weird today. Mood is low (as to be expected), but I feel like I've no energy at all, so tired (even though I'm not doing much and am off work) and a little light headed at times. I'm also having twinges in my stomach all day - similar to the twinges I had when I found out I was pregnant 🥲

When I was in hospital last week the midwife did mention the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy but said it more than likely wasn't. I presume that is highly unlikely at this stage? I am due back to work later this week but can't imagine how I'll be on my feet all day when I've such little energy 😫 just want to feel back to myself again...

Thanks so much. I'll keep an eye on it. I'm having symptoms again that I had while I was pregnant, such as a bit of nausea, heart palpitations and dizzy/light headed spells. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about 😬 will mention it all to the midwife this week!
