I’m having an ERPC tomorrow- what are your experiences?

Hello all,
I had a transvaginal scan today after bleeding for 5 weeks following a miscarriage at 11.5 weeks. The scan confirmed retained products just at the opening of my uterus and so they have said that as medical management didn’t work yesterday (long story!) I now need to have an ERPC procedure tomorrow. I feel very nervous for this due to the potential complications and the fact I have to be put to sleep. Has anybody experienced this before and what was it like?

Hi @HLouise94 so sorry for your loss. I had surgical management with a general after failed medical management following my mmc in October. I was worried about complications too but the consultant I spoke to really helped put my mind at ease. Getting put to sleep was fine, I remember being surprised at how quickly I felt the drugs working. Woke up feeling a bit weepy but also relieved it was done. I had some bleeding after the procedure but then not much at all from the next day onwards. I think it was about 4 hours I had to wait before I could go home. I wished I’d just opted for surgical management in the first place.
One thing it might be helpful to be aware of is that you may experience a hormone crash in the days following and feel very low, it’s normal and doesn’t last too long. Hope it all goes okay for you x

So sorry for your loss too! 💐Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me! And for the words of advice! It’s definitely good to know that tomorrow will hopefully be the end of all of this. It’s been a long road!

Take something to read as there might be a bit of waiting around before it's your turn to go. My hospital had Terrible internet.

I bled a lot after, I remember sitting in the car on the way home and bled through my pad onto the seat. i wish i had those tena lady knickers to hand, they would have been a better option to pads. The bleeding only lasted a day or two.

The anaesthetic also left me very tired for a couple of days afterwards but I wasn't really in any pain or discomfort. Apart from that, the day went quickly and smoothly and I remember just feeling so relieved it was all finally over.

I also ovulated 18 days later and fell pregnant again that cycle which was a huge shock!

good luck!
