Testing of tissue

Hi all, I had a missed miscarriage diagnosed at my 12 week scan and had surgery to remove after a long time of getting nowhere at home. I didn’t think they tested tissue unless you had recurrent miscarriages, this is my first and I have children already, however at the hospital I was at they offer everyone this, I accepted and they had a sample sent off to test.

I struggled to find anyone who could give me any answers in hospital but I’m just wondering what they can test for and if they found anything worrying when they would contact me - if it’d be weeks or months. The one answer I did get is I’d only be contacted if something was wrong and ‘no news would be good news‘ but I assume something would be wrong with the tissue for everything to have stopped developing?

I wouldn’t want to potentially try to get pregnant again whilst this is up in the air, but I’m not sure when to consider it ‘safe’ that they’re not going to call me with horrible news.

I had a miscarriage at 16 weeks in April, they tested my placenta as we had to arrange a small funeral for our baby and I didn’t want to delay that so opted out for them testing her.

They tested the placenta for and chromosome abnormalities with the baby, tested gender and if there was anything wrong with the placenta. It took 13 weeks for the results to come back but I do think this is dependant on the hospital. Ours had to be sent to Newcastle hospital for testing as my hospital didn’t run those tests and they also had a back log so waited a week longer than it would normally take.

Hope you’re well and I’m really sorry for your loss. It’s something you never expect to go through 🤍🤍

Hey OP, I’m so sorry this happened to you. I feel your pain as I’m currently 11 weeks and was told last week to expect to miscarry. This is my third loss so like you I’m interested to see what any tissue test would say.

The only thing I can contribute is last May I had an ectopic that needed surgery and they sent that tissue off for testing. They called me about 6 months later (sent me an appointment letter first) saying everything was as fine and just reiterated what had happened and when I asked what caused it they said they didn’t know. I asked if there was anything wrong with the tube they’d removed and they said they didn’t know as they couldn’t test for that. So in general the whole thing was pretty useless in my eyes. With my second miscarriage they just sent me home and this third one I have to go back next week if it hasn’t passed naturally so I will be asking for it to be tested and properly then!

I know that doesn’t help you right now but just thought I’d share my experience so you knew potentially what to expect and also know that you aren’t alone here.

Sending lots of love during this difficult time OP.
