Am I miscarrying? No heartbeat

So unsure of my ovulation date so all dates I’m using LMP
Had a scan on 18/7/23 at 5 +3. Everything in the right place, seen heartbeat flickering and baby measuring 2.5mm with HCG of 20,000
2nd scan on 27/7/23 at 6+5. Baby had grown to 5.5mm but told I was miscarrying as no heartbeat could be seen. Havent had any spotting or bleeding. I’ve had a lack of symptoms from the start.
went on the 28/7 to be prescribed the medication to miscarry. Registrar can’t legally prescribe them due to baby still growing and my ultrasound wasn’t confirmed by 2 sonographers so going back for a scan on Thursday. Registrar believes I am miscarrying but said in the same breath, it’s incredibly rare to have seen the heartbeat when baby was 2.5mm. So a few questions

  1. could the flickering have been something else and just haven’t seen the babies heartbeat yet?
  2. how long did it take you to miscarry when you found out baby no longer had a heartbeat?
  3. any success stories? I’ve even gone down the route of vanishing twin syndrome even though they couldn’t see twins

Sorry you're going though this. Do you need to take medication to manage the miscarriage? As if you have doubts, just leaving things for now seems wisest. It will become clear with more scanning what is actually happening. For myself, it took ten days for the miscarriage after an early scanned showed the hb had stopped. I did experience pain as well that's why I went for the scan. In your situation I would sit tight a while longer, as torturous as it is. 5+4 seems very early for a HB.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

Why had you so many scans, and so nearly?

A heartbeat at 5 + 3 seems virtually impossible.

The rest seems a little confused. It's so early, watch & wait seems the best approach & the scan on Thursday should confirm matters.

If there is no heartbeat, then the pregnancy is over - but given the confusion regarding dates I would still advise waiting till Thursday.

There should be no requirement to give you medication - if, sadly, the pregnancy is viable, you will miscarry shortly after & as it's so early, it is unlikely to need intervention. This is more of issue with MMC where the baby has stopped developing but has not been miscarried.

Good luck for Thursday.
