Unusual bleeding pattern

i had a missed miscarriage found out at 12 week scan and baby measured 9 weeks.

booked in for surgery and on the day, I unfortunately couldn’t have a general anaesthetic due to some complicated health factors so had to opt for medical management.

was discharged and they were confident that I had passed everything (checked cervix, had substantial bleeding).

then the bleeding stopped or was very light for a full 24 hours. I’ve been out and about today and just passed 3 large clots out of nowhere.

is it normal to stop bleeding almost entirely and then start with large clots? Should I be worried about retained products or is this just my body telling me to slow down a bit?

it’s worth noting I lost a lot of blood in medical management. Not enough for transfusion but tissue had got stuck in my cervix which had to be removed by the nurses to stop the bleeding. So I genuinely thought I wouldn’t really bleed any more.

what were your experiences after medical management?

I’m so sorry for your loss @SunSparkle. I had weeks and weeks of bleeding after medical management and it turned out I did have retained products. But I then had D&C and still had three weeks bleeding (including several big gushes, with lumps) and a scan has confirmed no RPOC. So unfortunately it seems there’s a very wide range of ‘normal’ and no way of working out how it will be for you. I have heard about there being further heavy bleeding a while after intervention as the placental site ‘scab’ comes away, which makes sense to me but may or may not be medically accurate! It’s not a bad idea to take it easy though - it’s a lot to go through, on body and mind. And do get back in touch with EPU if you have any concerns at all. Mine have always taken the time to listen.

@Oxalis00 thank you so much for replying. It’s so hard to know what’s normal and what’s concerning. Since then I’ve had next to no bleeding again so I wonder if it was because I’d had a busy day running after my toddler and needed to slow down a little bit. I feel well and don’t have a fever. I will keep an eye on things over the next few days.
