Weird bleeding - what is this?

Hi everyone, I’d appreciate some experiences and/or thoughts on my experience. I had a MMC (found at 12 week scan) with medical management 8 weeks ago, followed be retained products and D&C 3 weeks ago. I’ve only just this last couple of days had negative pregnancy tests. I’ve been bleeding lightly throughout, including over the last few weeks after D&C, but today had some big gushes (flooded through clothes three times…) with lumps, a bit like during the medical management but fewer. I’ve been scanned by gynae and no more retained products, which is good, but they don’t know what this is! Could it be my period? (It’s lighter now, no more big gushes in the last few hours.) Or something else to do with the miscarriage? Or something else entirely? The docs didn’t seem worried but I’m so sick of not knowing what’s going on with my body. Just want to feel healthy again! :(

I’d appreciate hearing what your first period after MC/D&C was like? And especially from people who had the D&C for RPOC - how long did it take for your period to come? Thank you.

Hi @Oxalis00 I'm so sorry for your loss and for everything you've been through. I have a bit similar but the other way round, surgical management which was unsuccessful followed by medical which had no effect and then waited it out a few weeks (almost 6 weeks since finding out about our MMC) and finally got a negative test and the all clear tissue wise from EPU (although they have now found a cyst). I got my period yesterday (28 days after surgery which surprised me, I thought it would take way longer) for the first time since March and it seems way heavier and much redder/fresher than my usual period, with quite a lot of small clots/tissue. Most times I've went to the toilet it's literally dripped out of me. I think perhaps the lining finally reducing in size could cause a heavier period, mine has been more painful too and I'm so bloated. It's a hard blow, you want your body back to a cycle but it hurts to be in the position of having a period and not being pregnant 😞 I'm so hormonal this week and cried every day again. Sending you all the love. I think if you begin to feel unwell or it continues definitely get yourself to hospital again just to get checked over. X

Thanks so much @Jx3303 it’s strangely consoling to know others are facing similar things, though I wouldn’t wish it on anyone and I’m sorry you’ve had what sounds like quite an ordeal over a long time too. So you got your period less than a month after the miscarriage was complete by the sounds of it? That reassures me this might be my period too. I’m just struggling to understand how the body can get going with a menstrual cycle while also still thinking it’s pregnant… so confusing. I’m also finding it more uncomfortable, and having horrible bloating, so that’s more we have in common, and weirdly there was a cyst on one of my ovaries at the scan today too! They weren’t sure if it was corpus luteum or something else though. Did they say anything much about yours? It’s so common isn’t it, unlikely to be anything troubling.

Will you be TTC again after this do you think? I feel so ravaged by the ordeal of the last few months I’m not sure I’m in the best health for it, but I’m also so conscious of time ticking on :(

@Oxalis00 I know, it's a very lonely place isn't it so it's nice to have others who understand, but so sad that so many of us go through it, I wouldn't wish it on anyone either. It's just devastating.

I had the surgical 10 days after the MMC scan, then a week later I was back in more pain and with more bleeding. A week later I went back and tried medical which didn't work then we waited two weeks to go back. Yesterday was that scan and 29 days after the initial surgery and my period arrived. Before medical management the tissue had moved to the bottom of my cervix so they hoped it would just come away before or with my period.

I agree, the body is so unpredictable and I really expected to have to wait weeks for a period. Oh gosh we really do have a lot in common! They said it was a hemorrhagic cyst which I believe means its bleeding. Yeah they said it would likely be fine and go away on its own, could be to do with hormones. I've had IVF and more internals than I care to remember and have never had a cyst so I just thought oh typical. They referred me to gynaecology to have it checked as it was just over the threshold for the size they'd leave.

As this was IVF and our first transfer (after a long year of cycles that finally led to a transfer in April) it's mentally taken it's toll and we decided we'd take a break for a bit. So I think if I don't get a Gynae referral through in 3 months I'll go private just to get it checked as my IVF clinic (who aren't near us) will need to know how it is before we plan for another transfer. We have 4 embryos in storage but right now I know I need some time out, enjoy summer. I am with you there though, conscious of time ticking on too. Do whatever feels best for you, if you need some time take it and look after yourself x

Goodness @Jx3303 what an ordeal. I’m sure IVF has been a huge additional toll on your body and mind, and I’m especially sorry it ended for you with MC. It’s great you know you need some time before you press on with TTC/the transfers - I salute that, and reluctantly acknowledge I probably need some of the same... Really hope gynae get back to you quickly and are helpful. You definitely don’t need to be worrying about the cyst for a long time now on top of everything else. Sending love and luck. And thanks again for replying - and even reading the thread! I realise now I gave it a stupid title that makes it sounds like there’ll be awful pics…

@Oxalis00 thank you so much, that means a lot and I'm so sorry for your loss too. Yeah I just didn't want to get my heart set on trying again soon as I knew it could take a while for my body to get back to normal and I'd have been so upset if it didn't work out for a transfer when I wanted. I've had many a set back with IVF and every time something goes wrong another piece of me feels like it breaks so it's time for a rest.

Title wasn't stupid at all; we all have these questions and worries and it's always good to have others opinions. I hope that the bleeding stays lighter for you and becomes a more normal kind of period and that your body is resetting. Please do go back to hospital if you're at all worried, it's always best to get checked and they'd tell you that I'm sure. Sending luck and love back to you too xx

Oxalis00 · 23/06/2023 12:11

I’ll look out for you on these boards in the future @Jx3303 and be cheering you on. Enjoy that rest and reset!

Weirdly bleeding has all but stopped today so I’m not sure this can be a period, unless I had the whole thing in 4 hours! The guessing game goes on…

@Oxalis00 thank you so much for your well wishes and I wish you all the very best for when you begin to try again too xx
