Surgery for miscarriage and tissue testing??

Hi everyone,

I had surgery yesterday for a missed miscarriage. Baby had a heartbeat and was doing well at 8 weeks and by 10 weeks my body had reabsorbed it and the sac was completely empty. My hormone levels HCG was still 100,000 at 11 weeks when they rescanned to confirm empty sac. I had MVA under general.

My question is, (UK) they said they will be sending the tissue off for testing, it is routine and it's just to check it was pregnancy tissue. They said they only test for abnormalities etc when there's recurrent miscarriage and again said this was routine to check for pregnancy tissue.

What would it be if it wasn't pregnancy tissue? Is this where a partial mole might show or is that when they test abnormalities?

Thank you

It will be testing to check if it was molar. Sorry for your loss x

@N400 Sorry for your loss. Went through the same thing MMC should have been 11 weeks stopped growing at 6 weeks and as it is my 5th miscarriage I asked for it to be tested to see why it keeps happening as far as I know they check genetics but unsure what else should have had the results back last Friday but nothing so far I’m also in the UK but can let you know when I get my results back ♥️🤗

Hi,
sorry to hear you are going through this, I gave birth to my baby at what was supposed to be 15 weeks after she died just after 12 weeks. I asked to have the genetic testing and they actually did the testing on the placenta tissue rather than the baby and we found out from this that she had turners syndrome.

it is likely they want to test for abnormalities or see why this pregnancy ended as the body reabsorbing the baby is likely rare so I’m sure they are just trying to give you answers.

it took me about 3 weeks to get my results back so hopefully you’ll be able to get them within that time.

again, sorry to hear your going through this, it’s a horrible time :(

Thank you everyone x they've said this testing is standard practice and they won't be able to tell me anything that was wrong with the baby etc as they won't do any genetics testing. They just test it to make sure it's pregnancy tissue apparently. Who knows 🤦🏼‍♀️ thank you so much everyone and I'm really sorry for everyone's losses too. Xxxx

So sorry you’re going through this. I recently had a mmc and had two surgeries as the first one failed. The testing is to check for molar pregnancy/tissue. It’s frustrating that they don’t really explain this. Mine unfortunately came back as a partial molar pregnancy, but I was fully prepared for this because of my symptoms and elevated hcg (which was over 500,000). Good luck with your recovery and everything going forward x

Thank you for letting me know xx so sorry you went through this too. They didn't tell me my HCG levels just that they were "elevated in the hundred thousands" so probably 100,000. I wish they would explain it x thank you x

Just go add, when I had surgery erpc they said this but then never actually got back to me so I just assume it was all fine.

Sorry for your loss.

Can i ask how did you find the MVA xx

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 29/11/2023 16:37

It was explained to me at my MVA that the tissue was sent for testing to rule out a partial molar pregnancy, I had to sign a consent form for it.

After my 3rd miscarriage at around 12 weeks, the hospital sent some tissue for testing. They reported back that it was a girl and her chromosomes were normal. So, they can do it!
