Am I having a miscarriage?

My partner and I found out that we were pregnant on the 8th of May. We took 6 pregnancy tests to be sure and all had 2 strong lines.

I fell pregnant 18 months ago on the pill and had an abortion so since this, we have been extra careful and we always use condoms apart from one drunken night on holiday last month on the 22nd, so we know exactly when we conceived so even though we are technically 6 weeks and 2 days, foetus age is 3 weeks and 4 days. We have decided to keep the baby and after the initial shock we are super happy.

I started having really awful period like cramps in my tummy and lower back 2 days ago but google said not to worry if there wasn’t any blood which there wasn’t. Today I have started bleeding in the last hour, at first it was light but now it is getting much heavier and I am seeing small stringy clots.

I am waiting for a nurse from 111 to call me back, but the thing that I am really confused about is that I have just taken a pregnancy test while waiting and it’s now negative. Surely if I was having a miscarriage right now, the test wouldn’t show as negative so soon? Does anybody have any experience or advice with this? The pregnancy tests that we took 10 days ago showed 2 very strong lines

It sounds like a chemical pregnancy, I have had these before. Google and see if it sounds similar. I'm sorry.

Sorry, yes it sounds like a miscarriage.

If your positive test was 10 days ago and it's now negative and you are unfortunately bleeding it is almost certainly that.

I'm so very sorry.

The negative test so soon thing... Your body may hold onto the feutus for a while after it has passed, it's not immediate. So when you tested 10days ago the baby may have already stopped forming and so HCG starts to drop. Eventually the physical process of miscarriage will start, but it's not immediate to the actual loss of the babys heartbeat, if that makes sense.

Thank you so much, that makes sense. So do you think it's even worth going to the hospital because if the test is negative now, there isn't going to be any thing visible on a scan or even HCG in blood or urine is there?

I'm not sure what the protocol is, maybe try and get an appointment with your GP tomorrow? He may refer you to the Early Pregnancy Unit.

I'm so sorry, it does sound like a chemical pregnancy. There probably is no need to have a scan, unless you have very heavy bleeding.
