Question about molar pregnancy

Does anyone know whether it would be possible to 'miscarry' a molar pregnancy or do they always have to surgically removed.

Thanks fransmom. It isn't a recent thing so I'm fine. It was never diagnosed as such but the things that I'm reading have now made me wonder about my last m/c.

I've only ever looked after ladies having a D&C for that reason, but I'm sure it is possible to MC.

There are a few GP's on here hopefully one of them will be around to ask later.

if you're uncertain, get yourself in for a scan - they'll be able to see if everything is out and do bloodtests to rule it out.

What is worrying me is, if it did m/c naturally but you were already going down for erpc would they check any further if they didn't find what they might be expecting? Would there be any repercussions from not having follow-ups due to medical staff not being aware of the possibility?
I realise that there are lots of 'ifs' and 'maybes' here. Just as I've said some things I've read have set me off. I may be way off.

You need to speak to a doctor to discuss your fears, and as Expat says, maybe get a scan and blood teests - I wonder what makes you think it could have been molar?

at many hospitals, products from ERPC are examined after the procedure.

a while back there was an article in the Sunday Times about a woman who'd had an ERPC, and it was no determined that she actually had a molar pregnancy - she went into the A&E bleeding lots so they just did the ERPC.

but then she didn't get a period for 10 weeks and she hadn't had sex with her husband since before the ERPC.

her body expelled a large mass sponteneously and she started bleeding again, so she went to hospital knowing she wasn't pregnant. that's when it was discovered she had had a molar pregnancy that had not been fully removed and the remaining tissue had gone on the grow in her uterus.

after this she was followed up, of course.

Sorry I don't want to mislead people, my last mmc was around 3y ago. Surely if there had been anything amiss I'd have known by now. Yes, everyone agree. If not, what would I look for?
Think I need a chat with the gp.

juule -you really need to speak to a doctor - a doctor who understands - you seem very worried about the repercussions following an undiagnosed molar pregnancy - and I think the only way to ally these fears is by talking about it with a medical person who knows what they are talking about.

Because I did lose a large clot just before taken down for erpc. I wrapped it quickly and got ready. Forgot about it and then discovered it when I got home. Had to investigate it (tmi) and was puzzled to find it was like a portion of pomegranate for want of a better description. Each 'pomegranate' cell was full of blood. When emptied it was deflated tissue which disintegrated. Swilled it away and thought no more of it until now.

The scan prior to the erpc being arranged the sonographer said there was 'something' there on the midline but....not sure what.

Sorry if this is a bit detailed.

I've heard of molar pregnancies being discribed as 'like a bunch of grapes' and also the pregnancy showing way before you would expect to show.

I know you've had previous miscarriages, was this one very different?

No, I've not had any pregnancy since but I don't think that's unusual as I was 44y+ when it happened.
Think you're right. I'm going to make appt with gp and see what she says.

Different only by the fact that it was quite early 7/8w but the cramping was more consistent with labour.

hi juuule my name is paisley i recently found at 17 weeks i had had a mmc but the feotus had only been alive for 9weeks i had similar surgery to a dnc they detected then that maybe something wasnt right with the feotus due to the look of the placenta.i am now waiting to find out wether it was a mmc or a mp they gave me the choice to have the surgery or let nature take its course but was best to have the surgery. so i think yes you can miscarry a mp hopefully that helps youxx

I had a molar prgnancy 18 months ago. The diagnosis was made because i had some spotting. A scan showed an empty uterus with thickened lining, positive pregnancy test.
Did HCG hormone level and it was elevated. They did regular HCG levels over a week which kept rising and the scans continued to show nothing.
They diagnosed it as MP and histology report post D and c confirmed it.
I hope this sheds a little light but i do think ot would be wise to dicuss with you gp.

Thanks for replying, Babyinarms.
I did get in to see the nurse practitioner at the health centre. She looked at my notes but they only said that I'd had erpc. She asked what my concerns were and I said about the molar pregnancy. She said she wasn't sure what one of those was and could I explain as I'd obviously read up on it.
Anyway the result is that they are booking me for a scan to check my uterus.
I have done some more reading and looked up what the follow up blood tests are for and found that it's to check Hcg levels. I have done a couple of pregnancy tests myself since the m/c and they came back -ve so I'm assuming that even if it was a mp it must have been a complete m/c or the erpc cleared anything remaining out.
The scan appt will take about 4weeks to come through.
Does that all sound about right to you?
Sorry to hear you've experienced this. How are you now?

Hi Belgo
Not much came of anything, really.
I had a phone call from the nurse to say that the hospital had refused to do the scan so wouldn't make an appointment for me. She said that she had a chat with the gp who said that a blood test should do the job. I went for the blood test and the nurse practitioner 'kindly' spoke to me about whether I got anxious about things. She took the blood. I asked what they were testing for and was told hormones. I asked which and was given a smile and told they'd discuss it with me when the results came back.
The results came back and when I asked they said they were all normal and they'd tested fsh. I'm to make an appt to discuss.
So, I'm not overly happy with the situation and when I get time, I'm going to make appt with GP. FSH isn't related to molar pg afaik but I think they must have tested for menopause. So maybe they think I'm doolally.
A gp that I mentioned it to doesn't think I have anything to worry about and if it was molar it looks as though it was a complete m/c. Also, the tests they do are for hcg and I've done a couple of pg tests since the m/c and they were -ve so that has reassured me somewhat.
