Received the news today that my pregnancy isn’t viable as it isn’t developing as it should and I’m measuring over a week and a half behind and no yolk sac or fetal pole. We are so upset, however we conceived through ivf so I have been taking a lot of hormone medications to keep the embryo (or lack of in this case) ‘in’. I stopped taking my medication today, can anyone give me advice on how long it might take for me to start to pass the tissue after stopping medication? I just want this to be over so that we can pick ourselves back up and try again. Thanks

I don’t have any advice but am interested in this thread as I am pretty much in the same boat. We used a donor embryo but the transfer process is the same and I’ve been taking the progesterone 2x day. Had an ultrasound yesterday at 7w3d which showed an empty gestational sac (measuring only 6w5d). I have to go back in 2 weeks to confirm but feel pretty hopeless. My fertility clinic is in a different state (I’m in the US) and has not yet gotten the results but I’m sure they will tell me to “keep taking my medication” until everything’s definite. I’d rather stop now and not prolong the inevitable. 😔

Hi both, I'm so sorry to hear this news, its heartbreaking to hear. I suffered an IVF miscarriage last year, my viability scan was on 8 week 1 day but baby had stopped growing at 7 weeks 3 days. It was confirmed that the pregnancy had ended as there was no heartbeat. I was told to immediately stop the progesterone's. After another scan at my EPU clinic 2 days later they started me on medication to pass the tissue, I opted for this rather than natural as like yourself I just wanted it over. There was slight bleeding and pain which lasted for about 3 weeks in total. It was only after 2.5 weeks that the pain and bleeding increased (only lasted a few hours), that is when the tissue actually passed through. I think it varies for everyone so difficult to say when it will happen. Wishing you both all the best x

So sorry. I had the same in 2021. Took 6-7 days following first scan and stopping medication for it to pass naturally. I was advised to keep taking my medication but I didn’t as I didn’t want to prolong it and go to hospital x

Hi, I’ve had several of these miscarriages where the sac is empty with no baby.

For me, so you know, I found out at 7 weeks (internal scan confirming empty sac with no baby) but my body didn’t realise until 13 weeks.

Within these 6 weeks of waiting, I had very strong pregnancy symptoms.
So the nausea and sore boobs continued as if a normal pregnancy.

The other times I chose medical management (would NOT recommend this route) at around 7,8 or 9 weeks because that wait, feeling pregnant was utter torture.

pregnancy tests still positive for up to 3 weeks after all bleeding had stopped after the miscarriage was complete from residual pregnancy hormones.

Good luck with this op, consider all of your options as ime this can be dragged out for weeks.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your messages, I actually started bleeding the day after I stopped taking my meds, it’s been a very heavy bleed but has actually stopped today. I still have an appointment with the EPU for the 21st to confirm that the pregnancy is over so hopefully there won’t be any residual tissue at that scan. Then I hopefully speak to my consultant the week after.
