Misoprostol how much bleeding

Took the medication yesterday for a MMC. First dose dissolved under tongue at 9am and second at 1pm. It started working by 10am and the bleeding was very heavy for the first few hours however by 4pm the bleeding became light and that has continued today. I feel like I could even get away with wearing a pantyliner. Is this normal? I expected the heavy bleeding to last longer. Concerned about retained products

I had the same, only my bleeding started about 5hrs after 4 tablets internally. It was heavy for a couple of hours and then very light overnight and after this. I also didn’t notice any large clots or tissue (I was 8wks).

I was convinced it hadn’t worked, took a second dose of 4 tablets 48hrs later with very little bleeding after this too. I was scheduled for surgical removal but a confirmation scan the following week showed no sac so I must have missed it happening. I didn’t have any cramps or period pains at all, it was far less painful and heavy than I thought it would be.

Thank you for your response. It sounds similar to what I have experienced. Those initial few hours after medication were awful but since it’s very minimal. EPU want to scan me next week which I am dreading. Knowing I’m going in to hoping that the baby has passed to avoid surgical removal when my last 5 cans were all going in with such hope and worry for baby to be okay. I’m sorry you’ve also been through this and hope we get our rainbow babies soon

I was going to ask this same question! I was 8 weeks pregnant, had a scan on Thursday and found out the heartbeat had stopped likely very recently before the scan. I took the 4 misoprostol internally yesterday at midday, had cramping and bleeding around 3/4 hours later. The pain ramped up and I had some more clots and bleeding but I’m not sure I passed anything big enough to be a sac but maybe I just didn’t notice it.

i woke up a couple of times in the night to change my pad but I do feel like the bleeding has slowed a lot and I’m not sure if I feel like enough blood has come out.

I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this, it’s shit xx

Hi. I’m also sorry you’re going through this too. It’s an awful experience having a missed miscarriage.

It sounds very similar to my experience except I didn’t actually have to change my pad in the night at all as there was no bleeding overnight. Weirdly the over last 2 days my bleeding is slightly heavier, although no more than a period. EPU told me that the tablets can exert effects for 48 hours and bleeding my slow and then become heavier.

I called EPU as I felt the same as you - not sure I had passed anything big enough: they did say the bleeding really varies between people but they would like to scan me just in case (initially they just wanted me to wait and do a pregnancy test in a few weeks). I know the medication doesn’t work for everyone and I am scared about retained products although want to avoid anything surgical.

I hope we both get through this and have out rainbow babies soon xx

@Ttcafterloss hi, just wanted to check how you’re getting on? Have you had your scan yet? I seem to be bleeding much heavier these last few days - now on day 5 after the miscarriage and feels like a heavy period whereas it seemed to get a bit lighter in the 2 days after the miscarriage.

Ttcafterlosses · 15/02/2023 08:38

Hi I hope you’re doing okay. My scan was meant to be this morning but I actually called EPU on Monday because I passed a large clot on Sunday and I am still bleeding, although more like a light period.

EPU said that if I’m still bleeding and have the scan likely they will see a pool of blood and need to scan me again so it’s pointless and they asked me to a pregnancy test next week and call them again. I did actually hope they cancelled it because I would find it difficult to go back there right now in terms of mental health.

I did tell them my bleeding was on and off and sometimes heavy and sometimes light and they said it’s different for everyone. i had the same where the day after the medication it was light bleeding and slowly got a bit heavier, no more than a normal period for me.

It just seems like such a long process. hopefully if you’re bleeding heavily it’s a good sign that everything will pass and no intervention will be needed.

FruitTwistFanta · 15/02/2023 09:58

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I hope the heavier bleeding means it’s all passing but I guess it’s just a worry as there’s no way to really know until you take a test 3 weeks after which just seems so long away!

I think I just went to rush back to normal and it’s annoying my body isn’t but that’s silly as the miscarriage was literally 5 days ago!

Hopefully the clot passing means the worst of it is over for you now xx

Hi how are you and how is your bleeding? My bleeding stopped yesterday so I am planning on testing on Monday or Tuesday which will be 2 weeks since the medication as the EPU have asked me to call them with an update.

I completely understand what you mean about 3 weeks being so long - it’s a limbo phase between grieving the loss and then trying to move back to a normal cycle.

i am not sure whether the medication will impact the next cycle and whether I should start ovulation testing but I suppose I will decide after I get a negative pregnancy test. Right now I am taking things one day at a time and seem to be having a lot of bad days - maybe hormone related as I have been very upset and angry over very little things but it’s all tied in to the loss in the back of my mind. I have reached out for some psychological support the EPU offer but I’m yet to hear back. I hope you’re coping okay xx

sorry if I’ve posted this wrong I’m not an experienced user so not sure if I’m using the reply function correctly

Hi just an update to say I tested today and still have a faint positive. I was hoping for a negative as it has been 2 weeks now but EPU did say it can take 3 weeks to get a negative test

FruitTwistFanta · 20/02/2023 17:56

Hi, I think I’ve pretty much stopped bleeding now which is good. I took a test a couple of days ago which was positive but that was literally a week after so not that surprising! Are you using cheapy tests or frers?

Ttcafterlosses · 20/02/2023 18:15

Hopefully we can both get our cycles back on track. I used a test the hospital gave me called one step. All I have at home are FRERs but I’ve heard they’re very sensitive so I might buy some cheapies as I have wasted so much money testing over the last few months and also I may get a negative on a cheapie before a FRER (I just want a negative now to be be able to move on as horrible as that sounds).

FruitTwistFanta · 21/02/2023 07:15

I totally get it, I can’t wait to see a negative. I just got a load of internet cheapies, so I can test every other day to see the line fading! I’m not even particularly fussed with tracking ovulation I just want to know my cycle is getting back on track. Hope you’re ok xx

How are you getting on? I actually booked a last minute trip and went abroad and when I returned I was intending to do another test hoping it’s negative but then started my period which has been extremely heavy so impossible to test with FMU. I called the EPU to ask them to discharge me but they said they still need me to get a negative test even if I have started what I think is ny period so hoping I can test in the morning as the bleeding is slowing down. Hope you have your negative and we can move on from this x

Hi! That’s good you have had your period - must be a relief that you can move on to your next cycle.

Personally I don’t think I’ve even ovulated yet lol - not interested in tracking anything this month so will just wait and see. I did have a negative 3 weeks after the mc-tbh if I squinted there was probably a little faint something still there but I’m happy to call it a negative!

I don’t blame you. I won’t be tracking anything anytime soon either. I think I’m just emotionally numb at the moment and can’t be bothered with any of it anymore

I managed to get a negative test in the end. Period has been very weird, a few days of extremely heavy heavy bleeding with huge clots followed by a few days of spotting which stopped and then started again.

I hope everything gets back on track for you and things work out for us both xx
