Positive test after heavy bleed

Long time lurker and first time poster so please forgive me if I haven’t posted correctly. I had a chemical in early October and continued to TTC shortly after. I started what I thought was my period just under 2 weeks ago and it was very heavy with lots of clots just like my previous chemical so I was convinced it was another. I have tested again today nearly 2 weeks after bleeding began. I am still bleeding and shocked to see a positive test. I tested using another brand which was also a definite positive. My tests became negative within a few days of my last chemical bleed. I have been referred to EPU on Thursday as my GP thinks it is a miscarriage but not everything has passed which could cause infection. I am still holding on to hope but think deep down with such a heavy bleed and clots I should prepare for the worst. Has anyone been through anything similar? I am 5 weeks along so bleeding began very early at just over 3 weeks

When I was 4 weeks pregnant I tested positive for a further 5 weeks, even though I was continually bleeding heavily with clots every day from the first day my period was due. I’d tested positive a.m then AF started later that day.

Sorry you are going through this worry Flowers

Thank you for sharing your experience. Im sorry you went through that and thank you for your kind words. I hope you don’t mind me asking, did you visit EPU and were you testing positive for so long due to retained products? I imagined that with a pregnancy this early my levels would drop very quickly but my tests are so dark. I am hoping no medical intervention will be needed and unsure what will happen at EPU as my previous chemical was managed at home

My tests were dark positives the whole time.
I didn’t go to EPU as it was an IVF pregnancy and the fertility unit just instructed me to keep testing weekly. By the time they eventually told me to come in for a scan the bleeding had stopped the day before and I tested negative on a sample I took in the day of the appointment so they didn’t even bother to scan me.
Looking back I can’t believe they behaved this way but the snr fertility nurse was on holiday for a couple of weeks of it and the rest of the team just didn’t seem to know what to do with me. It was a self funded cycle so I should have insisted to the care I had paid for but it was just such a distressing time & I was young.
I’m glad you have got a scan booked, the ‘what ifs’ and the waiting to find out what’s going on are torturous.

That sounds like like such a difficult experience. I am shocked they left it that long and I really do hope everything worked out for you. I appreciate hearing the reality of these situations which is why I have posted. My sister suggested it could be a twin pregnancy and I have lost one but I know that is highly unlikely having no history of twins on either side of the family. My husband and I are trying to accept the reality of it being highly likely it’s another loss and just want to get tomorrow out of the way. I will keep the thread updated to help anyone else who may go through similar

How awful for you both, I'm sorry you're going through this.

I bled very heavily with clots about 6 months after I had my daughter and it wasn't until I passed what was 100 percent a baby that I realised I had had a miscarriage. I didn't know therefore I didn't test before and was in to much denial to test after so can't tell you how long It would have shown up as positive.

Yes it is possible it is a twin pregnancy and you have lost one
It is possible that it's not but there is a pregnancy there too.
However it's just as possible that it is unfortunately another loss.
It's the not knowing that is the worst I'm sure, but you will know tomorrow, until then try to rest.

With my second I had pain dominated on one side and was in a and e for 12 hours and had bloods done only to be sent home to come back in 3 days for a scan. The wait was the worst.

Best of luck and I hope it works out for you xx

Thank you for sharing your experience bumblebee412. I completely understand why you wouldn’t want to test and I avoided it too but the positive after 2 weeks gave me false hope. I hope things have worked out for you.

I wanted to update the thread for anyone who may come across this in future. I have just returned from the EPU. Everyone around me had a picture of their scan in their hands. I was the only woman there a crying mess who was told there was no baby present in the scan. I was told they need to do 2 blood tests to rule out an ectopic. I had one today and currently waiting for the results and will have another in 48 hours. Still coming to terms with my previous loss in October and feeling quite numb at the moment, just hoping it’s not an ectopic.

Sending massive hugs to you. I am so sorry.

That's very cruel of EPU. I was given mine privately and could leave straight away to stop the awful crushing feeling you must have experienced.

Take some time to look after you now, one day at a time I know it's hard.

7 and a half years later it did work out for me xx

Keep us updated if you can x

Thank you. My HCG levels are just over 1100 which is concerning me as I started miscarrying at just under 4 weeks. I have a niggle on one side but not enough to warrant going into a&e. I called the EPU about my concerns but they dismissed it and said I would need to wait for my second set of results. I am still bleeding and still have dark pregnancy tests 2 weeks after miscarriage began. They said no ectopic was seen in the scan but the woman doing the scan told me herself that they are not always picked up on scans. I am so frightened of having an ectopic and potentially losing a tube.

Hi, unfortunately things didn’t end well for me. I was constantly at EPU being monitored weekly. To everyone’s surprise the pregnancy actually progressed in the end against all odds and we even saw a heartbeat but the growth wasn’t progressing like they wanted it to and at my final scan they said the heartbeat had stopped which was heartbreaking to hear after baby had fought so much. In the end I had a missed miscarriage and had to have medical management. I hope you have a better outcome x
