Recurrent Late Miscarriage

Hello,

I’ve recently had a second 2nd trimester miscarriage. My first was at 13 weeks and 4 days (last year) and the second was at 18 weeks.

I’m 38, so running out of time, but so scared about being in the same situation again. Both losses presented in similar ways - pain and then bleeding, and going into labour about three days later.

I’m still waiting for the post-mortem etc from this time around. Last time the results were pretty inconclusive, but the baby was fine. This time when I went to the hospital (after being turned away for a few days) by the time they finally paid some proper attention they said my cervix was dilated and I was in pre-term labour. They suggested a cervical stitch but my contractions were already strong and frequent and my waters broke shortly after.

I had assumed it was very likely to be a case of cervical incompetence (which I had never heard of previously), but when I went back 6 weeks later and spoke to another doctor she told me it’s unusual for cervical incompetence to present with pain and bleeding (my cervix measurement had been fine in my 16 week appointment).

She suggested they’d put me on Aspirin if I became pregnant in future, but I was already taking Aspirin in this pregnancy due to my previous loss. Also, they were both IVF (ICSI) pregnancies.

We are thinking of getting a private consultation to try and investigate but not quite sure where to start or what kind of specialist to approach.

Sorry for the long post. Am hoping someone may have some advice to share? Thank you for reading if you made it this far x

@Summerhill18

I am really sorry to hear what's happened to you.
How awful that they were in second trimester too.
They really need to monitor you now and they can't dismiss your concerns as being normal.

@Summerhill18
You still got time to have a baby I'm 39. Some I know had a baby early 40s.

Thank you @Scorpio8
Second trimester miscarriages are much less common, so want to find out the cause before trying again (especially as the only pregnancies I’ve ever had have ended up this way).
Was hoping to maybe get some recommendations of consultants or clinics to try…

@Summerhill18

Sorry I really don't have any idea.

I hope someone comes and responds to you.
