is my sister having a miscarriage?

can anyone give me some advice for my sister please?
She is 5 1/2 weeks pg, and started spotting bright red blood yesterday. it progressed to small clots which only come out when she goes to the loo.
She has no pain at all, and is clinging to the hope that she may still be pg. The epu will not scan her till wednesday when she would be 6 weeks.
She has been ttc for 18 months
Any advice or silmilar experinces would be really appreciated

How scary for you both. I think it is unfair to make her wait so long for the scan - even if she is only 5 1/2 weeks. Maybe if she went into A+E they might give her a scan there - mind you she'd have a long wait on a saturday. Still if they'd do it for her at least she wouldn't have 4 days of not knowing. My sil bled loads with her dd at about 6 weeks and was told by the doctor that there was no chance that her baby would survive and yet she went on to have a perfectly healthy f/t baby - so it doesn't necessarily mean that she is losing her baby. Sending you both big hugs.

thanks amynnixmum,did your sil pass clots? I think the fact that she has no pain is making her cling to the possibilty of still being pg. I will suggest a and e

Sorry spykid, I dont know about clots or pains with sil. Basically she bled really heavily as though she was having a period and the doctor said that with that amount of blood loss the baby couldn't possibly be ok but she was. I had cramps with my miscarriage and the blood was the same as with my period. Sorry - I know this isnt of much help.

Thaks so much, just want to try and help her in anyway, and think that passing on other peoples experiences may console her in some way.
Its so hard to know wht to say

Could it be an implantation bleed? If she's not having pain I'd take heart from that. I had a bleed at 10 weeks, but went on to have my lovely healthy DS, so I hope she has the same outcome. If she's scanned much before she's six weeks, they may not see much (although they might), so they're probably trying to avoid a scan where they tell her there's no baby, but in fact the baby's just too small to see. Will keep my fingers crossed for her xxx

impossible to say I am afraid, but bleeding can often be quite harmless. it could be an implantation bleed or threatened m/c. When I was 5 weeks ish PG I had a very light period - cramping and 3 days of spotting/brown blood and everything was okay. I think the reason the EPU would have said wait till 6 weeks is that is realistically the earliest they can see the baby's heartbeat, which is the best test of whether or not the baby is okay.

Sorry to hear about your sister. Presumably if she has already tested positive for pregnancy, it is unlikely to be an implantation bleed. Unfortunately until she has her scan it's impossible to confirm whether or not she is having a miscarriage. Plenty of people have bleeding and go on to have healthy babies. It's a horrible waiting game. Take comfort in the thought that there is no cramping, particularly if the bleeding has stopped. Clots are more concerning. If a miscarriage is going to happen, there is nothing your sister can do - she mustn't blame herself.

Spykid-how is your sister doing?

I had bleeding at 8wks & 10wks with dd & at 10wks & 13wks with this little one.When I was pregnant with dd,nearly all of my friends who were pregnant had bleeding too,in fact,more of us had it than didn't.

Bleeding is classed as a sign of early pregnancy in some books,as it is so common.A mumsnetter who's dh is a GP told me that 25% of women bleed during pregnancy & 75% of them will go on to have a healthy baby.

I can understand the EPAU not wanting to scan before 6wks,as it is virtually impossible to see anything before then & she would only have to go back again,which would be worse.

I'll keep everything crossed for her-please let us know.

Mirage, thanks so much for remembering.(hug)
Unfortunately my sister did go on to have a miscarriage which was confirmed at a scan last wednesday.
She experienced no pain at all, but the epu told her this can happen. She has not coped to well with the news, and has needed time to grieve.
I just hope it doesn't take her so long to conceive next time.

Oh Spykid,I am so sorry to hear this.

Something similar happened to me.I lost my 1st baby to an ectopic pregnancy after ttc for 3.5years.

Unbelievably,within weeks I was pregnant again with dd.My GP said that very often,any kind of pregnancy,whether successful or not,can have the effect of making you much more fertile afterwards.It certainly was the case for me.My 1st baby took 3.5years ttc,2nd 7 wks & 3rd 6wks.

It will be of little consolation for your poor sister at the minute,but it is a tiny light at the end of the tunnel for her.

Please give her a hug from me & I hope that the sun shines again for her soon.
