Anti D Not Given Before 12 Weeks - Really Worried :(

Hello,

I'm currently in a really worried place. I had my daughter 2 years ago and was given Anti D in third trimester and 2 days after birth. I am A- and my husband is O+, my daughter is also O+. Since then, I have sadly had 2 miscarriages. The first was a missed miscarriage picked up at 9 weeks but baby had only grown to 7.5 weeks and the second miscarriage I've just had was at approx 5.5 weeks. I had medical management for the first one and this second one has been natural.

I've asked a few times about why I've not been given anti-d for either miscarriage and I just keep being told it's not policy but after a lot of research with dreaded Google there seems to be a mixed bag of opinions and it's really got me panicked. I'm terrified I now could have developed antibodies and it's too late to do anything.

Would love anyone with any medical know how or clarity on this to explain what the risk is and what I can do next to get checked before we try to conceive again.

x

Don't think they give it under 12 weeks. Maybe it's because the placenta hasn't taken over until then. Sorry for your losses Flowers

Agree with PP. The yolk sac feeds the baby everything they need until 12ish weeks when the placenta fully takes over. I understand it's a nerve wracking time for you due to your MCs - sorry for your losses 💐 - but I don't think anti D is going to be any benefit right now

My friend is rh- and was kicked in the stomach before 12 weeks by a child. Hospital said it's not needed before the placenta takes over. Try not to worry. I'm sorry for your loss Flowers

HCP here- our policy is not to give anti d before 12 weeks

It's not needed before 12 weeks.

I was told once it also costs £50 ish per injection which is why they have clear guidance on when it's needed.

I had loads during all pregnancies due to frequent bleeding.

Thanks everyone so much for your messages! x

@ChickpeaPie Thanks for this info. Do you know a bit more on the why? I keep asking but no one has a clear answer on why and what the level of risk is? x

The risk of feto-maternal haemorrhage in miscarriage under 12 weeks is very low which is why it’s not indicated

@RuthW85 if it helps, I am rhesus O- and had three miscarriages between my two pregnancies and very similar gestations to yours. I wanted anti-D to cover all possibilities too. However, I ended up having a totally uncomplicated second pregnancy that did work out and the baby was fine - I had no antibodies.

My later mc were in no way connected to not receiving anti-D, it turned out they were due to a septate uterus that wasn't picked up in my first pregnancy. I was also on progesterone until 14w and aspirin the whole way through so it might be worth pushing for this when you next get pregnant.

Flowers for you, miscarriage is a deeply traumatic thing and you just want answers x

@RuthW85 I had a mmc and had to stay in hospital throughout. I was given the injection before leaving, I was meant to be 9 weeks. It was my first pregnancy if that makes any difference? Xx

MissMaple82 · 24/08/2022 20:57

I had Anti D with my first, never had one when I miscarried, went on to have a second and Anti d. I wouldn't worry

I can't thank you all enough for coming back to me, it's been really helpful. I pushed the hospital and got given a blood group and antibody screen test which came back negative so that's a relief. Had to push the doctor to check but I'm glad I did for my sanity x
