Missed miscarriage

Hello,

I'm what should have been 11 weeks pregnant on Sunday. I had felt something wasn't 'right' since about 6 weeks as my symptoms sort of didn't advance much from then. I went for an NHS scan at 7 weeks due to loss of symptoms.. they kindly scanned me and told me that they could see a heartbeat. Baby measured 6 weeks which I found concerning as I knew my dates 100% as I temp. They told me not to worry it's normal for dates to be out and the visualisation of a heartbeat was a good sign.

Fast forward to week 9. Still no symptoms other than tiredness and sore boobs. Normally by 9 weeks I'm extremely bloated, very out of breath and feeling unlike myself. This pregnancy I just knew for sure it wasn't progressing when I could still wear my skinny jeans with ease, could still run up a flight of stairs without being out of breath and just felt very 'me'. I paid for a private scan and they confirmed that the pregnancy had not progressed since my last scan. Baby actually measured a bit smaller at 5 weeks 6 days.

I'm waiting to miscarry naturally at the moment. Currently spotting very dark brown blood. It doesn't even have any red to it, it's literally dark brown. Not sure if this is bad? I'm quite disturbed by the colour of it. I've been spotting now since Sunday which was when I should have turned 10 weeks. Still just spotting. Really hoping to pass the pregnancy soon and see some normal coloured blood 😖.

Just wanting some advise really on whether I should be worried by the colour of the blood? Or if this can be normal?

Thanks for reading

Hiya,

im really sorry for your loss, it’s utterly heartbreaking :( my first miscarriage was a missed miscarriage but as I was 16 weeks I had to deliver, with my second miscarriage it started with really brown blood and then gradually went to dark red until it got lighter and stopped, I think I was a couple of days before the blood got lighter, I hope you’re ok , pm if you need a chat x

Hey hun,

I'm really sorry to hear you are going through this.

Apologies that I can't offer much knowledge or experience. I do know that the brown blood is usually "old" blood. So this could be completely normal.
I would definitely just check with your GP.

Commenting to give you my support & to boost your post.

Thinking of you xx

So sorry to hear of your loss. That must have been really hard to go through.

Thank you for replying. I hope my bleeding becomes red soon. Can I ask how many weeks you were with your second miscarriage? I'm unsure if I should expect pains when I pass the pregnancy or not. I have had 3 previous miscarriages. 2 of which were chemical pregnancies where there was absolutely no pain at all. 1 was a missed miscarriage at 8 weeks gestation. That one was like a mini labour. Contraction pains and I passed large clots. Wondering what to expect this time. If it will be more like the chemical pregnancies due to the small size of the baby or if it'll be more like my 8 week miscarriage.

So sorry to hear this it sounds like mine. I had dark almost black blood for ages (over a week) before the full on mini labour type symptoms occurred and that is when i passed most of it. I then later passed what must have been the placenta but without pain. Once the majority came out the first time that is when the typical red coloured blood started to appear. I hope this goes as smoothly as possible for you and make sure you have the follow up scan for any remaining tissue. My periods returned straight away but even then i had tiny flesh coloured pieces and periods with clots which I don’t normally have. Also sharp pain like nerve pain I believe was due to remaining tissue. This happened to a friend of mine and she had to get a D&C despite thinking she passed it all. My hospital was useless but make sure you get support if you need it. It was our first time unprotected after my dd and I really didn’t think it would affect me that badly but it really did. Look after yourself! Take time to heal.

Thank you for replying. Yes perhaps I should call the EPU and ask about the bleeding. I'm just a bit alarmed at quite how dark and brown it is. It's like a dark mahogany colour.

I have a scan at EPU on Wednesday and they will no doubt offer me pills or surgical removal of the pregnancy. Was hoping to have passed naturally by then but if not I think I'll take the medication to speed things up.

Mine died at 6 weeks and i passed it week 9 and it was very significant like your one where you had the labour like experience. I hope it isn’t too bad for you. So sorry for your losses it really sucks!

Blue2020 · 02/06/2022 18:32

@MixedUpChameleon sorry you are going through this.

I had bits of dark brown bloood/discharge stuff for three days, then it turned into light bleeding for a few days, then it got very heavy (passing stuff).

Thank you for this. I'm sorry to hear about your loss too.

I have been spotting the dark brown almost black like you. Hopefully mine turns red soon. I have a scan booked in with the EPU on Wednesday next week so I will either have passed naturally by then or be offered some help.

One of my fears is not passing everything. I keep hearing stories of this and it sounds quite scary. Also worried about infection due to the fast this pregnancy has been inside me but not growing for almost 5 weeks now. There's no pain or odour so I'm hoping that's a good sign?

Mine ended up like that. I had a mmc and found out at a private scan at 9wks that it had stopped at 6wks. Then the natural miscarriage started at 11wks.

From starting the natural miscarriage I was bleeding for over 5 weeks. Then I had a feint positive test and very minimal bleeding. Went back for a scan and they said I had retained products. So I then opted for surgery rather than medical. After the surgery I only had bleeding for a further 4-5days and then tested negative.

Hi @MixedUpChameleon

So sorry to hear you are going through this.
I have just been through my first mmc, picked up on a scan at 9+2 but stopped growing at 7 weeks. I had been spotting for 9 days before EPU would see me and actually I had to pretend it was red just to be seen. My bleeding was very dark brown, kind of like wet coffee granules (and actually once I googled coffee granule miscarriage it seems that’s a fairly common symptom, not just bright red blood).

Once they’d confirmed no heartbeat, they said as it had been a few weeks already it was unlikely to pass itself so I took the medication. It was very much contraction type pain and heavy clotting, however nowhere near as bad physically as I have heard some stories. The cramping was over within about 4 hours and my bleeding stopped completely 5 days after taking the medication and a scan this morning confirmed everything had passed.

I wanted it over as quickly as possible without surgery, so went with the tablets, however if I ever went through it again I think I’d go for surgery.
Sending you love, it’s a horrible time x

I was 9 weeks with the second one, I thought it was quite painful, like mini contractions too..sounds like you’ve had a hard time, sending you big hugs xx

Thanks for replying. I think on Wednesday I'll ask for the medication if things haven't progressed. Funnily enough after writing this thread when I went to the bathroom the bleeding is now starting to turn a bit more red. It's been 5 weeks since the pregnancy stopped growing so perhaps it's unlikely to pass on its own like they advised you. I've not got too much longer to wait now until my scan so hopefully they can give me some advise on what to do.

Yes the blood was like coffee. Such an odd colour. Just completely and utterly brown. Not a hint of redness mines been for the past 5 days. Tonight though thankfully it's seems to be turning. X

@MixedUpChameleon

Hope you are okay this morning? Fingers crossed the red blood is a sign of things happening and hopeful not dragging out too long for you.
Good luck for your scan too, let us know how you get on x

Update - thought I'd just update this if anyone in a similar position Google's and comes across this thread.

The dark brown spotting started last Sunday.
The spotting turned red on Thursday.
Cramping (mild to moderate not painful) started the following Sunday.

Lots of clots and heavy bleeding through the night. Pretty sure the 'pregnancy' has passed now. Gestation was 6 weeks and it was not painful at all. Just period like cramps and pains and pressure in back/bum but not painful or any need for painkillers.

Thought I'd update as I wasn't sure what to expect. I have Miscarried an 8 gestation pregnancy (although at 12 weeks) and I found that like labour and very painful.

Thought this may be helpful to anyone wondering what to expect.

Pregnancy stopped growing around 6 weeks.
Spotting started at 10 weeks.
Miscarriage complete at 11 weeks. Xx

Thanks for the update. I really hope you’re able to move on from this as smoothly as possible. I still find it so hard after the similar experience I had. It has been so long and I haven’t managed to get pregnant again so am constantly reminded of the loss every month and the guilt. I pray you get your healthy baby asap. Look after yourself and talk to someone during the low times. Big hug to you xxx
