miscarriage diagnoses with slowly growing embryo after ivf

I have had ivf and got pregnant after FET. However, after doing first scan at 6 weeks there was only gestational sac. Ivf clinic repeated the scan after two weeks, i.e., at 8 weeks and there was a gestational sac and yolk sac. The ivf clinic diagnosed it a miscarriage and referred me to EPU for management. However, EPU have indicated this is not a miscarriage as there has been growth from the first to the second scan. After another week 9 scan, they have identified a fetal pole so now they indicate that since the embryo is growing they cannot diagnose as a miscarriage and cannot perform surgery. They are scanning me again in a week's time to find if there will be a heartbeat. Has anyone gone through this experience? I am very worried that this pregnancy will cause me problems and EPU indicate it was wrong for IVF clinic to have diagnosed as a miscarriage. By the way, this is the 4 miscarriage but the first after ivf.

Just to say so sorry you're going through this stress, and hopefully bump your thread a bit. I've not had the exact experience but have unfortunately gone through weeks and weeks of uncertain scans; however, b/c it wasn't IVF, there was more uncertainty around dates (I was sure, they weren't). For me, it didn't end well (but it also started less positively than yours I think), but I've heard stories of people for whom it did end well, growth was just slow, and all was ok in the end. So...just to hopefully give you a bit of online support really. ❤

Many thanks for your response and support. I feel that doctors give me different opinions which is frustrating. Each one blames the other.

I know this is an older thread but may I ask how long it took for everything to resolve? I am currently going through this after an FET and no embryo seen at 7week ultrasound. Have to wait two weeks to confirm but I am trying to prepare for a disappointing and drawn-out process. Have been cramping today and yesterday but am still on progesterone so I’m wondering if that might be preventing any bleeding for now. Have been looking at MC “options” (natural, medicated, D&C) and they all scare me.

@ColleenEF85 At the 10 week scan there was no heartbeat and there was no growth, finally they decided I could get MC options. I stopped progestorne between week 8-9, and started bleeding and went to A&E where they scanned me on week 9 and they told me to take progestorne and then I stopped bleeding immediately.

I chose to go with aspiration. I went for it because I just wanted to move on instead of having a DC where I would have to be on waiting list. They scanned me in the morning and the aspiration was performed in the EPU in the afternoon with no need for anestasia. Also, I asked the doctor to make sure there was no remaining tissues as when I did DC they kept some tissues. The negative side on this, is you really feel how they are removing your embryo.

From a medical perspective, the embryo can still grow in these two weeks and I know it is a long way to wait. Maybe you can ask for a scan in a week's time so you get some assurance? Just call in EPU or go to A&E in a hospital where there is an EPU. Wish you the best.
