Miscarriage pain

Hi everyone, I'm currently having a miscarriage, I had a scan at 12 weeks and they discovered that growth stopped at 5weeks and 6 days. I'd had some spotting before the scan but the night after the miscarriage really got going, I was up from 1am til 7am with the terrible cramping pains, the pain was so bad it made me vomit a few times (sorry TMI), it eased off at 7 and I managed to get some sleep for a couple hours and then felt fine, until 1600, when the pain started again.
Since then I get some nasty cramping at least once every day for a few hours before it all settles down again. It has only been 3 days but god it is miserable! I wake up thinking its over and then at some point in the day the pain starts up again. It is no where near as bad as the first night but they're still so painful I can't do anything but go to bed and wait for it to pass.
The bleeding isn't excessive or anything and it definitely isn't ectopic, the scan showed it was all in right place.

I just wanted to know if this is normal? And how long does it carry on for?! Dr Google isn't super helpful!

Hi @Floral581 So sorry for your loss. I had something very similar when I still had some retained products after an ERPC (the irony…) It lasted about 5 days, but as soon as I’d passed the bit that was causing the problem it stopped completely. If you’re worried I’d call either the miscarriage association or Tommy’s helpline (think they’re both only manned during normal working hours) or see if you can see your GP/the Early Pregnancy Unit. In the meantime, hot water bottle and painkillers, lots of rest and stay hydrated. 💐

Hi op I'm in a similar situation now. Had a terrible first day of bleeding and pain followed by normal type cramping. Last night however I had cramping all night again and bleeding has been heavier. I feel like I get moments where I feel it's settling then it starts up again. The only difference is mine was a pregnancy of unknown location so I doubt they can even see on the scan if I have retained products. I know it's not much help but I'm thinking of calling the EPU tomorrow for advice/reassurance. My HCG seems to be going down from the hpts I'm doing. Xx

Just checking in to see how you’re doing @Floral581, any improvement yet?

Hi again ladies, I'm so sorry for both your losses.
It seems to have settled down now 🤞🤞 it lasted about 4/5 days in the end.
I've got a scan at the EPAU tomorrow, I'm hoping that all the pregnancy tissue has passed now and I won't have to worry about having medical/surgical management.
Fingers crossed!

I had painful cramps for four days until I had past most of the tissue/clots in one long session. A hot water bottle was the best thing. Paracetamol and ibuprofen didn’t help (the epu nurse later told me not to take ibuprofen because it can make the bleeding worse). Then I had some more cramps a few days later, and again passed some more. Since then it’s mostly just been bleeding. I had a scan at the epu and they said there’s still some clots and stuff there. I was really hoping I was finished but hopefully it’s close to it.

I agree it’s really hard to find this information. I guess everyone is different so saying 3-5 days might not even cover half the number.

I wasn’t prepared for the amount that came out though. A pad was useless, I flooded it/my jeans and I had to spend 2.5-3hrs on the toilet. I’m just glad I was in the house during that period. For the second smaller session I was in a restaurant though. I thought after the first session and with it being a few days since having cramps/heavy bleeding I would be fine attempting to resume normal living. I spent 45minutes with intense cramps while trying to eat dinner. Then I spent the next 15 minutes in the restaurant toilet. I regretted going out but it’s hard to predict when it will happen and when it’s finished.
