Inconclusive scan at 6+4

Just want some opinions really.

My LMP was 22nd Nov. Unfortunately this month I didn't track ovulation but it's normally around day 14. 28 day cycles & regular.

On 19th December I started spotting & was due my period so presumed it was AF. By the 24th things hadn't got going and was just spotting so I did a test and it was positive. Spotting continued until December 27th ish.

I was seen at EPU today for a scan and I should be 6+4 by dates but there was only a gestational sac and yolk. No fetal pole & no heartbeat. They've said it could just be an earlier pregnancy and booked me in for another scan in 2 weeks.

I honestly don't know how I'm going to keep going for the next two weeks not knowing. I can't remember the last time we had sex but it was definitely before December 15th. Think it would have been around December 7th ish or that week. My partner went away the weekend after that and I was testing positive before we had sex again (although we actually haven't due to all this stress).

When I tested on 24th it said 2-3 weeks. This changed to 3+ at 5+5.

I really need to prepare myself. I've got no symptoms other than mildly sensitive nipples (breastfeeding) and occasional nausea but not sure if I'm imagining it.

I'm going crazy and I guess need to write it down and find out what I should expect.

I would say there is a really good chance that it was just a little early to see a heartbeat. If you ovulated just 3 or 4 days later than day 14 you could be more like 6 weeks exactly rather than 6+4, and so seeing a gestational sac and yolk would be exactly what you would expect to see. By the time you go back in two weeks, you'd be more like 8 weeks and definitely should be able to see a lot more. The spotting would've been the right sort of time for implantation. The change from 2-3 weeks to 3+ weeks is also a good sign that your hormone levels were rising.

You could either way the two weeks, or see if your GP would do HCG level tests for you to see if the levels are doubling within 48 hours. Or you could book a private scan, but you'd probably want to wait a week at least to make sure you have a chance to actually see the heartbeat, by which stage you're halfway there to your already booked scan anyway.

Good Luck OP, hope it all works out for you! Flowers

Thanks for replying. I'm really struggling because I don't want to get my hopes up but also I've been trying for a year & already had an early miscarriage.

Ironically I already have a private scan booked for next week as EPU refused to see me initially. I can't decide if I should cancel & wait to be seen at EPU or if if I should go ahead.

I originally spoke to GP before the EPU referral and they wouldn't do HCG as they said it doesn't tell them if the pregnancy is viable and if a home test is positive then I'm pregnant & wait to be scanned.

I understand the GPs point of view & the decision by EPU to wait two weeks but I'm finding the limbo very hard to cope with.

If I wait to for my next scan it would have been 4 weeks of uncertainty.

I can understand that, I've been through the same and it is really hard. But if you're no longer having any bleeding or spotting or cramping and you've seen what you have on the scan today then there's a really good chance for a good outcome. Sounds like the private scan will give you some peace of mind and not too far off now and at 7 weeks you should still see a heartbeat. Best of luck Flowers

I had a scan in Dec when I thought I was 6 + 1 (based on LMP) and it was the exact same - no foetal pole or HB, I was told given the gestational sac measured at 2.4mm I was actually 4wks, 4 days. I’ve also had to wait 2 weeks for another scan and go back on Sunday. Did they give you a measurement for the gestational sac? It’s really horrible having to wait isn’t it!

She did measure but she didn't tell me the measurements and now I'm annoyed at myself for not asking. She said around 5 weeks due to the presence of the yolk sac.

I'm in two minds about weather or not to re-arrange the private scan for later on or not. I want to know but then waiting a week knowing things aren't progressing will be worse than if I have some hope.

The last time we DTD was 5th December so whilst I understand ovulation could have meant that I'm a few days behind it's just not possible for my dates to be massively out unless it was immaculate conception.
