Miscarriage and sick note advice please

I suffered an early miscarriage at 7 weeks. I am absolutely devastated and after self certifying I still felt unable to return to work. I got a sick note from my doctor and the reason they listed is bereavement. Does the note need to state its pregnancy related? I am worried it will not be protected and the absence will be used against me.

My dr always put miscarriage on my notes so my work couldn't take issue with it being pregnancy related . Ask your boss if it needs to say miscarriage on it.

Take care of yourself xx

@dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn Thank you. I have just moved within my department and had asked for bereavement to be noted as I really didn’t want to have this discussion with my new male manager but can always get back in touch with my surgery if need be.

If you want it to be recorded as pregnancy related then I think your fit note needs to say that. I had several fit notes during pregnancy and they all said " [dodgy hips] due to pregnancy" and "[other ailment] secondary to pregnancy" fir example.

If you don't want to have the discussion with your line manager, you can ask not to disclose the reason for absence to them, and send the fit note directly to HR. At least you can in my large organisation where HR is sufficiently separate to day to day management. Could that be an option?

Sorry for your loss
My doctors used to write gynaecology problems and I'd be very nonspecific which worked for me.
Good luck with everything
