Missed miscarriage at 13 weeks

I went to my 20 week scan and found out that the baby had stopped growing around 13 weeks. I had my 12 week scan 1 week before the time they thought the baby stopped growing and everything seemed fine. I’m just so baffled at how something bad could have happened so quickly after the 12 week scan. It was just a shock to think I was halfway but then find out the baby had died 7 weeks before. I did have pain under my right rib at around 13 weeks for about 3 days and went to the doctor but they said it was probably acid-reflux even though I didn’t have heartburn or anything. Has this happened to anyone else? I read that miscarriage is less common after 12 weeks and I’m just wrecking my brains trying to think of anything that could have caused an infection or something else harmful to the baby.

Hi MHW. I’m so sorry for your loss. I could have written this exact post myself. Back in July we went for our 20 week scan to be told no heart beat, baby measured 13 weeks, everything had been fine at the 12 week scan. The last few months have been tough, always thinking about why it happened. I had no signs anything was wrong at all. We have our PM appointment with the consultant next week so hoping to get some answers, although from what I’ve read it can often be inconclusive.

Thanks, I’m sorry for your loss too. It is reassuring to know I’m not the only one. We’ve sent away for a post-mortem but they told us it’s a 50% chance they’ll find something. Hopefully we can get some answers but I don’t want to get my hopes up. We’re going to try again as soon as we can and I’m hopeful for the future but I feel like it will be a very anxious time.
