Hcg level 7 but positive test

Hi

I'm a bit confused and wondered if anyone could shed any light.

I had a mmc and surgical management on 09 June. After 3 weeks I was still getting a strong positive test so I was scanned at the EPU who confirmed there was no remaining tissue. Since then they have been monitoring my hcg levels weekly. I had them done last on Thursday and I also did a pregnancy test that morning. The test still showed a faint positive. When I got the results back, the hospital told me my hcg was at 7.

I'm confused as to why I'm still getting positive pregnancy tests when my hcg is lower than the threshold of the pregnancy tests? I've used a FRER and boots test strips which I have never had evap lines with before and have always been so reliable. Does the hcg remain longer in urine than in blood? This is my secondly loss and I just want my body to get back to normal now.

I am sorry for your loss, and that it is taking a long time to get back to normal.

My understanding is that the normal level for hcg is different in blood and in urine. I’m sorry I don’t remember what the urine level is, but hcg of under 5 in the blood is considered normal/not pregnant (I know this as I had extensive treatment and monitoring after a complete molar pregnancy, when my hcg did not return to normal by itself). So if your blood hcg is 7 then your urine level will also be higher, hence the positive pregnancy test.

I hope that makes sense/helps. All the best x

@MargoGru thanks for your reply! Yeah that makes sense. I thought it must be something like that. Can't wait for it to return to normal!

Sorry to hear about your molar pregnancy ♥️

Also the FRER threshold is only 6. I got lines on a FRER until 9 weeks after my MMC surgery
