Can severe vomiting cause a miscarriage

I am 11+3. On Thursday night I had severe gastroenteritis/ food poisoning, both ends (sorry tmi!) and have now started bleeding. Mostly spotting but some was bright red with tiny clots.
I don't have any pain and it doesn't seem to be getting any heavier.

My question is, do you think the sheer effort of constant vomiting could have caused the bleeding or result in mc?

EPAU can't scan me until weds and my last pregnancy ended in mmc with surgical management so I'm obviously anxious.

I had gastro at 12 weeks with DD2. It was really horrific gastro - coming out both ends, was crawling on the floor vomiting, couldn't walk etc. I for sure thought I'd lost the baby after several hours of it! But now have healthy and happy 2.5yr old.

Didn't have any bleeding or spotting after my gastro though. I'm sire these two things are unrelated.

Good luck op Thanks

@nc8765
Thanks. It's just the bleeding started at the same time, that's why I thought it is connected.

I’d probably look at getting it checked if your able to. For peace of mind if nothing else. Everyone’s experiences are different, some have positive outcomes, others sadly don’t, but two women could have the same symptoms and different outcomes.

I had sickness and diarrhoea with bad cramps one night (I thought it could have been food poisoning) and then 2 days later I started bleeding. I was 11 weeks and had had a missed miscarriage when the baby was 7weeks. Apparently some women can have sickness and diarrhoea whilst having a miscarriage.

My fingers are crossed for you, I really hope you and your baby are ok sending positive vibes

@applecrumble24 I had hyperemisis and after a severe bout of vomiting I started spotting brown discharge, I was admitted to hospital the next day and they couldn't see a reason for it, apparently dehydration can cause spotting in pregnancy so it may be that! I had a scan in hospital and baby was fine and I'm nearly 32 weeks now so it might be nothing! I'm convinced the force of my vomiting ruptured a blood vessel somewhere.

I really hope its all okay for you 💓

@Ter2021 thank you, I'm getting scanned on weds. I had a private scan at 9+4 and baby was fine then which was further than I got last time with mmc🤞 . Sorry for your loss too.

@unicornpower thank you. That's good to hear, yes hopefully a ruptured blood vessel or something that will heal.

That’s good to hear. Hopefully nothing to worry about ☺️ I hope your scan goes well x x

Hi @Applecrumble24 how did you get on with your scan! x

Applecrumble24 · 30/07/2021 13:16

Hi @Newgirl21
It was good thanks. They can't find any reason for the bleeding. I asked if it could have been the vomiting and they said maybe! Seems with bleeding in pregnancy, no-one actually knows!

Years ago I was told being sick in pregnancy was a good thing as a better chance of pregnancy continuing. Maybe an old wives tale not sure.
