Miscarriage advice

Hello,
Looking for some advice as driving myself crazy.
At 6 weeks pregnant I started bleeding heavily and clotting (no cramps) and called the EPU. They said I was having a miscarriage and as it was early I was best to do expectant management which I did. I felt like I had a lot of unanswered questions and really wanted a scan so I managed to get an appointment a week later. I did a pregnancy test (FR) that morning which was positive (it showed up straight away and the test line was darker than the control line). When I got to the EPU they asked me to do a urine test before my scan. The midwife then told me 5 minutes later that the test was very faint so if they were to do a scan they wouldn’t see anything. I said that I had done a test that morning and offered to show her a picture and she got a bit defensive (which I understand but I was confused and desperate for confirmation through a scan). They said to test in 2 weeks and call if it was positive however she was confident she wouldn’t need to see me again as was very faint. I stopped bleeding and stupidly did a test a week later to see a negative for myself and so my partner and I could start thinking about trying again and be confident it was all out my system. The test was the darkest I have seen it and a dye stealer. I will wait another week like they had said but wondered if anyone has experienced something similar? I just wish I had a scan. I know tests can stay positive for some time after a miscarriage but just think it’s odd theirs was really faint and mine are so dark. I am also still experiencing nausea, heart burn and sore boobs. TIA

I could of typed this out myself! No professionals will see me in person or have offered to do bloods (for hcg levels) or an ultrasound! I am actually thinking of booking a private scan just to get some answers as I bled for 4 days, this was 10 days ago, still having pregnancy symptoms, still having positive tests and am now thinking maybe it was a threatened miscarriage as nothing was done to confirm a complete miscarriage! Sorry did not mean to make that all about me but maybe book for a private scan? I know I’ll feel loads better once I actually know what is going on!💐💐

Miladog · 17/07/2021 21:41

It helps to hear that I’m not the only person experiencing this! (Although it also sucks that we are even going through this). I have debated this. I’ve even googled home blood tests and debated that. I feel stupid but there is still a glimmer of hope, and I just need to know either way. I will test again in a week and if it’s still positive demand they do a scan. It will just be the longest week ever. How far along are you?

I know I have found that aswell- very bitter sweet! Oh god don’t do a home blood test you might pop a veinWink! That’s exactly how I feel! Because I haven’t been told directly ‘here is confirmation of a miscarriage’ how can we actually know for sure? Especially while still experiencing all the pregnancy symptoms. I would of been 5 weeks 5days when I began bleeding, now 7+1 although obviously unsure is I actually amConfused if you have a look on google certain places do blood loss/pain scans or reassurance scans, it’s quite costly ranging from around £50 to about £85 but atleast it’s a definite answer xx

Miladog · 17/07/2021 22:01

I will definitely look into having a scan done privately. I feel at least I will be going expecting the worse but at least it would give me clarity. I’m unsure how to move forward without it. I would be 7+2 right now 😔 I hope you get the answers that you need xx

You and me both my love, so unfair isn’t it. Good luck praying you have a positive outcome🙏🏼💐xx

66babe · 18/07/2021 07:55

The clinic will be using a low sensitivity pregnancy test
What you buy in a shop is a high sensitivity pregnancy test
This can be positive for up to 6 weeks after termination or miscarriage
So sorry for anyone going through this journey , very very sad
This is purely around finances, staffing levels and clinic capacity
Early miscarriage is so common that they really cannot see , scan and manage every one .

The risk is an ectopic pregnancy( growing outside of the uterus) so if you describe pain and or bleeding especially on one side -going round to the back -up to the shoulder blade you should attend EPAU or AE asap. This is a medical emergency and should never be ignored.

Mamaelephant7 · 18/07/2021 09:22

@66babe yes I completely understand that and didn’t mean to bad mouth any member of the nhs- I know how stretched it is. It’s just mentally draining going through this and every day wondering what is actually going onSad I actually attended a&e the first day of bleeding as I had lower right sided pain, which was going round to my back and up into shoulder blade, they done my temp, blood pressure and blood test to see my infection markers then sent me on my way, guessing it wasn’t ectopic luckily or I’d probably be close to death by nowConfusedxx

66babe · 18/07/2021 10:06

Oh @Mamaelephant7 I did not take your post as criticism at all , my apologies if that is how it came across
I fully get the frustration and as someone who has to try to refer ladies into EPAU I feel exactly the same
I was trying to help with understanding why this happens and how the 2 levels of PT can differ
Apologies again 💐

66babe · 18/07/2021 10:07

That is also really concerning that despite having several red flags they did not refer you into EPAU
Have you been scanned since and has all settled ?

Mamaelephant7 · 18/07/2021 10:23

@66babe haven’t had anything to confirm what’s going on, I came home last Wednesday and just tried to rest as much as I possibly could (with 5 little ones at home) and took paracetamol for the pain, bleeding and pain stopped Saturday. Have since spoken to the gp dr, community midwife and epau over the phone- all told me it’s more than likely a complete miscarriage and there’s nothing they can do. So I’m now looking at booking a private scan xx

66babe · 18/07/2021 10:37

Oh bless you darling ... it sounds very likely to be MC , so sorry
Also sounds like you have your hands full ... make sure you take care of yourself too

Miladog · 18/07/2021 10:57

Thank you for replying! I didn’t know they used less sensitive ones, it’s crazy how one test can be so positive and one nearly negative. I am so grateful for the NHS and I know we are so lucky, I think it was just hard going through this trauma but feeling like an inconvenience and not getting much information. That then annoyingly drives you to googling things and speaking to others, which is then when you hear about their scans and experiences. Luckily my actual GP has been amazing and listened to my anxiety’s and made me feel like how I was feeling was completely normal.

I am fortunate that I have no signs of ectopic.

Mamaelephant7 · 18/07/2021 11:44

@Miladog glad your GP listened and helped you
@66babe yes I knowSad it’s hearing the people that have said they’ve had a massive bleed but the pregnancy wasn’t affected and it just makes you think- I wonder if that’s what happened to me? So sorry to rant haha it’s only me and the kids at home most the time DP works long hours so when I talk to another adult it’s like verbal diarrhea Grin Blush xx

Miladog · 20/07/2021 01:57

Hey! Just checking in on how you are doing? I took your advice and have a private scan booked for tomorrow. Bit worried they are going to think I am crazy for having a scan when it’s likely I’ve had a miscarriage but I know it will really help my anxiety just to know either way! X

Mamaelephant7 · 20/07/2021 10:44

Oh all the best @Miladog💐
I’ve now had 2 negatives yesterday and today so have accepted what’s happened. Sad but atleast I’m not constantly wondering what is actually going on now xx

Ell17 · 20/07/2021 19:02

@Miladog So so sorry you're going through this Thanks it does sound like a similar situation to mine back in April. Have you heard of a blighted ovum? I don't want to dash your hopes at all, as you're staying positive, as I was. I would highly recommend you get a private scan of EPU won't see you. I was getting dye stealers and 3+ clear blue, after having 2 major bleeds. I still had hope. The scan showed a sac but no embryo (blighted ovum). This was at 6.5 weeks but measuring at 5wk2d. I was scanned weekly by EPU for 2 weeks where the sac kept growing with no yolk inside (hence the strong positives), got to 8.5weeks LMP and they offered me medical management. It's a long road being in limbo but I do so hope you get the your answers soon and I'm staying positive for you ♥️♥️♥️

Miladog · 20/07/2021 19:20

Hi @Ell17. Thank you for commenting! I haven’t actually heard of that but it does sound similar to what I am experiencing. I have a private scan booked for tomorrow and hopefully I will get the answers I need. It is handy to know what the possibilities are, and your message make me feel less silly for getting a private scan done. I worry that I am wasting their time, but at least I am paying to waste their time! I’m sorry for your loss and wish you luck with your journey! Xx

@Miladog Good luck with your scan!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 you're not wasting anyone's time at all. Hopefully you'll get some answers x

Mamaelephant7 · 21/07/2021 12:07

@Miladog thinking of you today💐 have you had it yet? Xx

Miladog · 21/07/2021 13:01

@Mamaelephant7 I’m glad you have the closure that you need, I am so sorry for your loss.

Just had the scan and glad I did. It was inconclusive, they said I am not actively miscarrying and my uterus is still closed, however the sac is only measuring 5 weeks (I should be 7) and they can’t see an embryo. She said that it could be that my dates are wrong and at 5 weeks it could be too early to see the embryo, but it could also be that it stopped growing at 5 weeks and is a failed pregnancy (most likely that as I started spotting at 5 weeks). I need to have a rescan in a week to see if it is progressing or not. They also found that I have a large cyst on one of my ovaries that I had no idea about! So I am so glad that I went, thank you for mentioning it as not sure I would have otherwise xx

Hi @Miladog did you have another scan?
Sorry to jump back on this post it’s nice to have someone to talk too. So i definitely had 2 negatives the 19th and 20th, It’s now been 3 weeks and 3 days since the miscarriage, but I’ve had these the past 3 days and don’t know what to think?! New pregnancy? Retained product although I deffo had negatives? Sorry😣! Xx

Hey @Mamaelephant7. Had another scan yesterday and my cervix has opened so should start to miscarry any day now. Just want it to hurry up and be over!

The tests definitely look positive! See if they get darker in the next few days and then hopefully it is a new pregnancy Grin. The timeline works out that you could be. Are they the same brand that you had your negatives on? Really hoping for positive news for you!! Keep me updated Smile xx
