Rising hcg levels after a miscarriage

I started spotting brown discharge on Tuesday and throughout the day it was getting darker and more clotted and so I went to the ER. They told me it wasn't a viable pregnancy and at 6 weeks my hcg was at 600. They sent me home and told me to let it pass and come back in 48 hours for blood work. Last night what looks like a lumpy sack came out and it was the most painful (emotionally) experience. Results from my bloodwork have increased and are now at 850 which I don't understand. They want me to have more bloodwork done on Tuesday with a scan on Wednesday. Why are my hcg levels rising? What does this mean?

I think what could gave happened is that whilst your pregnancy wasn't viable, the embryo was still growing, just at a slow rate which meant unfortunately survival wouldn't be possible. This would mean your Hcg still rose a little. Now that it sounds like you have miscarried you would expect the Hcg to drop.
I'm sorry for your loss and wish you strength for the days, weeks and months ahead.
