Hi, a good friend of mine had been trying for ages to get pregnant and she miscarried at 6 weeks. She is bleeding loads and has lots of pain on one side of her lower tummy and down her leg and right up her shoulder. She is in a lot of pain. She had a bbaby over two years ago by C section. Is that level of pain normal?

Cheers

Jo

The shoulder pain is not normal that I know of. Did she have a D&C

BellaBear · 05/11/2007 20:22

I don't think taht is normal - isn't shoulder pain on one side a symptom of extopic pregnancy? Don't want to scare, but best to get it checked out. I had a mc at 6 weeks and the bleeding was like a heavy period for about three days, then less for a few more days.

BellaBear · 05/11/2007 20:23

*ectopic

Sorry, really didn't want to scare but I remember my GP asking me about shoulder pain when I mced.

orangehead · 05/11/2007 20:24

It really can vary, I have had 3 mcs and each one very different. Has she been seen by anyone? she really should get checked out to ensure the miscarriage is complete and there is now infection

orangehead · 05/11/2007 20:26

I was also thinking possible ectopic, I didnt want to scare as well. She should really get seen.

paulaplumpbottom · 05/11/2007 20:26

I would say she should call NHS direct immediatly

BlueberryPancake · 05/11/2007 20:26

She has been to hospital but they were useless. She had internal checkup and an internal scan but everything appears normal. I'm really concerned because I have also heard of ectopic pregnancy and shoulder pain.

Is it possible for her to call her GP?

BellaBear · 05/11/2007 20:28

Could you call again and say how worried you are?

orangehead · 05/11/2007 20:28

When was she in hospital, has things got worse since then? When did she mc? Sorry 2 many questions

lucysmum · 05/11/2007 20:31

tell her to go to a&e. i was loosing so much blood when i miscarried that i kept fainting and eventually called 999. ended up with emergency D&C and 4 unit blood transfusion. apparently the guidance is if you are using more than one big pad an hour you should go to hospital (soryy if TMI)

paulaplumpbottom · 05/11/2007 21:42

How are things now?

spottyshoes · 05/11/2007 21:50

I've miscarried at 6wks before and had a dull af pain and normal af bleeding, It only hurt when I m/c at much later stages. Abdominal surgery and ectopic pg does radiate shoulder pain but it is usually at the tip of the shoulder blade and IME like a dull strain, a bit like sleeping awkwardly, but becoming more stabbing over time. Having had the cs 2 yrs ago I dont think that should attribute to the pain. If I were her I would definately have it checked. Hope she's ok.

Hi thanks for answers. She's better, but very pale and weak. Still loosing blod and still pain in shoulder and leg. She is seeing another specialist tomorrow so she's now in good hands. She is an emotional reck though. I'm not sure what to do/say to her.
