Low progesterone

Hello,

After some cramping and bleeding at what I thought was 6 weeks pregnant I went into hospital for a scan and blood test. They found a sac measuring 5 weeks but nothing in it. The blood test showed hcg levels of 1000 but my progesterone levels were too low for my pregnancy to continue and be viable, and I am miscarrying.

I just wondered - is low progesterone a cause or a symptom of miscarriage? When I try to get pregnant again should I ask for progesterone so that I don't miscarry again?

Thanks so much in advance. I'm finding everything quite surreal at the moment.

Hi lovely @HotCupOfNo. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Low progesterone results in miscarriage. At 12 weeks the placenta takes over which is why the risk of miscarriage decreases after 3 months.

Generally, you won’t be tested for any abnormalities until you’ve had 3 consecutive miscarriages, and so they are really hesitant to prescribe anything until that point.

That being said, if your progesterone levels were tested then it may mean you get treatment as it was an identified cause. When I had my miscarriage my levels weren’t tested, and so they won’t prescribe me anything if I’m lucky enough to conceive again. By all means, ask for it, push for it. But I’ve already had the discussion with my doctor and it’s a no from them :(. Good luck, and take of yourself over the next coming weeks. It’s heartbreaking but you will get through it 😘 and it will feel easier with time xx

Thankyou for your lovely message @Summersun001 ❤️ I'm going back in tomorrow for another blood test so they can check it's not ectopic. Just waiting for the bleeding to get heavier now really x

@HotCupOfNo you’re welcome honestly.

The next week or so will be tough, just be kind to yourself. I had my miscarriage in December - “natural” at home, make sure you have plenty of pads, a hot water bottle and ask for painkillers. I was prescribed codeine and it really helped with the pain and discomfort. They gave me a sick note for two weeks off work too take as much time as you need.

Come over to our group when you’re ready. I’ve popped the link below. The best bunch of ladies on here and are so supportive xx
