Cramping after miscarriage

Hi everyone,

Last Monday (4th jan) I believed I miscarried. I was in a lot of pain during the night and heavy bleeding started and this continued into Tuesday. So as far as I’m aware I believed I had miscarried. Blood then turned brown and very light and stopped fairly soon afterwards.

I was early around 5 weeks, 6 weeks tomorrow by my dates, however the cramps are still pretty bad. Does anyone have any experience of this? Epu told me to test tomorrow and call gp to refer me if the test still shows positive tomorrow.

Just wondering if anyone else has/had cramps after a miscarriage? Slightly concerned I didn’t bleed for very long as well. The aren’t constant and seem to come and go, worse in the evenings.

Will try get epu to see me as line is still fairly strong on a test this morning and I still don’t feel ‘right’

I am so sorry for your loss.
In my experience, cramping is completely normal as long as your test is still positive. I mc-d on the 12th of November, and had strong cramps till the 20th.
I was around 5-6weeks too, it is January, but still experiencing some....never had period period pain before, but since I do get cramping before and after my period and also when I`m ovulate (well, my hormones are rising but since mc, I had 2 anovulatory cycles).
The pain is getting less and less so I believe in a few moths it will completely go away.
Did you manage to get an other scan?

Itsjustme3 · 14/01/2021 18:22

Dr referred me to EPU who did bloods as first step them said will call me and if still high I will be contacted to be scanned.

Sorry to hear you’re news and hope your doing okay.

@Tina8800 I am just curious if you could share more of your experience.. I had a mc 2.5 weeks ago ( medically) and I had the normal uterus cramps and bleeding for a week . but starting 2 days after the mc I began having punches and pains in the sides of my pelvis.. what felt like my ovaries.. or has just gotten worse everyday. Pinching and twinges on and off all day long. Sometimes they make my back hurt. They did a pelvic ultrasound last week and saw nothing abnormal, and hcg levels were 175 which they said were normal. They couldn’t give me an explanation for the pain. I am desperate to find out if it is normal after a mc and how long it lasts.

I went back for bloods yesterday and I’m still having cramping which are still pretty strong and can be painful but tend to be worse in the evenings. I’m waiting to hear back from them tomorrow to find out if I’m going to be scanned as really don’t feel like it’s normal cramping. @Magnoliamoment has the cramping gone down for you at all?

Hi @Itsjustme3. What does your cramping feel like? I had normal middle of pelvis uterine cramping for about a week strong after and then lingered throughout the second week. They felt like period cramps and I have been told those are very normal after a miscarriage. Some woman have uterine cramps for a few weeks as the uterus goes back to normal. My pain is not in the middle or period cramp like.. Its is on the lower sides, feels like my Ovaries and it is more of an aching pain and sometimes stabbing pain. I unfortunately still do have those at 2.5 weeks post mc. My Gyno told me it takes 6 weeks for your HCG pregnancy hormone to leave your body. Not sure if that has something to do with it. I am just desperate to know if my pain is normal but centre uterine pain sounds very normal post mc. Hoping this resolves soon for the both of us

Sounds like an incomplete miscarriage perhaps, some tissue left behind that hasn't come out yet.

Itsjustme3 · 18/01/2021 06:43

@Magnoliamoment it’s difficult to explain sometimes it can feel like shooting pains which take my breath away, I get pains in my back as well and feel bubbles constantly. Flutters are coming and going also, hopefully find more out today.

I’m completely drained also and had full on week at work last week so I know I need to take it bit easier to let my body recover.

Have you been advise what to do in regards to your cramping?

@Magnoliamoment
Im sorry you have to go through this... I had very similar pain, it was quite bad till I got my first period. I mc-d on the 12th of November, on the 19th a scan confirmed it cleared out and pregnancy test came back negative. Exactly 4 weeks later to the mc, I go my first period, and it was bad. Lot of cramps, clots and blood. I knew it wasnt a normal period and probably my body just had to clear out completely. After that, the cramping got better but I believe it took a long time for my uterus go back to normal. Also, the hormones works like crazy, I think that is why I still get weird cramping before period and ovulation.
Did you get your pregnancy test negative? Did you have uterine cramps with the pregnancy?

Itsjustme3 · 18/01/2021 10:43

Yeah I had pretty bad cramping and that’s why I tested because knew it wasn’t normal period type pains. Sorry to hear you were in a lot of pain. Hopefully mine will stop soon as I can move on from this all.

@Tina8800 Thank you for sharing your story. last week my blood work hormone level said 175 Hcg.. so I am guessing it is a little bit lower but not gone as the doctor said it can take a few more weeks for the pregnancy hormone to go to zero and for a test to be negative.
I actually had early pregnancy bleeding and cramping for a week around the time my period was due. However, that is not when I miscarried, my pregnancy continued to develop for a few weeks after that. Doctors said it could or could not have been related.

I believe I am Ovulating now as I have some CM but the bloating and cramps in my Ovary area and lower side back have gotten so intense right now. Bad aching and sometimes intense pinches.

@Tina8800 was your pain in your Ovary area as well? This feels so specific to the sides of my pelvis. I am happy to hear your cramping got better after your period and gives me hope that this could all be related to my hormones. Thank you for your support and I hope you are doing well now.

Magnoliamoment · 18/01/2021 19:13

@Itsjustme3 I am sorry you are feeling this way. Are your cramps in the centre like your uterus? Or your Sides like your Ovaries? I also have those bubble bloating feelings too. I think for the first few weeks some uterus pain is expected and normal. Not sure about Ovary pain. I hope your scan goes well and you feel better soon.

Itsjustme3 · 19/01/2021 11:08

Thank you

Scanned me and said pregnancy of unknown location so looks like I’ve miscarried. More bloods have been taken to check levels are going down.

@Itsjustme3 sorry you went through all of that. It’s been a while since your post so hope all is back to normal. Did the aches go away eventually? When did you get a negative test? And when did bleeding stop?
