Confused, what do I do now?

Hi mamas... I had a positive pregnancy test on the 17th & made an appointment at my GP to get the antenatal process started. Yesterday (21st) I started bleeding heavily with clots. I knew immediately what was happening, I just didn’t know the term “chemical pregnancy.” This has upset me more than I thought it would considering the pregnancy was a surprise. I got pregnant with my first very quickly & everything went smoothly, so I’m also guilty of naively thinking I wouldn’t ever have a MC

I’ve had a negative test this morning after bleeding most of the night. Do I still go to the appointment this afternoon? Or should I call & tell them what has happened and cancel it? Also since I’ve had a negative test, can I start trying again as soon as possible? Thank you all

I'm sorry ladyks it is a shitty thing to go through. I would call them and explain, there is probably nothing to be gained by going to the appointment but it's worth having the loss recorded on your medical record in case (god forbid) it's not a one-off. Then take whatever time you need to come to terms with it - some people want to TTC straight away, others need a bit of a break. The only potential issue is with dating a pregnancy if you become pregnant without having a period, but that's not insurmountable. for you, hope you are coping ok.

I'm sorry @ladyks I'd call and explain why the appt isn't necessary and ask them to add it to your record.

Fwiw I'd take a month off, let your body settle down and then try again.

Thanks for your replies ladies. I also have a thyroid issue- hypothyroidism. Is that something worth going to speak to them about a possible cause for the CP?

And can you please tell me what you would say on the phone to the receptionist? I’m from the US and find it very confusing over here in the UK also not in love with the idea of explaining to a receptionist that I lost a baby

I'm so sorry this has happened.

If you are on the correct level of medication for your thyroid condition then this was not the cause.

If your TSH is a little on the high side then you're not on enough thyroid replacement and this should be increased. If you're not on sufficient replacement then your prolactin levels will be higher. A high prolactin level can mean a loss of pregnancy or failure to conceive.

I was on 50mcg thyroxine and had a miscarriage so a consultant doubled the dose after explaining the above to me. My mother had 12 miscarriages due to an undiagnosed thyroid condition. Because of her history we knew what the potential problems could be.

I'm now on a combination of t4 (thyroxine) and t3 after trying to find a suitable level of replacement after many years of fatigue and depression.

Ask the receptionist for a telephone consultation with a gp with regards to your original appointment and ask for your TSH and other levels (including vit D) to be checked. (My level of vit D was 'depleted' when first investigated for a thyroid disorder - often goes hand in hand.)
