Positive tests almost 5 weeks post miscarriage/MVA?

I have an appointment with the EPU for a scan in the morning as even a 25mIU/ml test is very obviously positive, and my MVA will have been 5 weeks ago on Thursday.

Has anyone experienced this and what was the outcome? I'm really hoping nothing is retained as they were confident after the MVA that they had removed everything...

I should add that I have been taking cheap tests every few days since a week or so after the MVA and all have been positive, so I am fairly certain there is no new pregnancy but we have been having unprotected sex since around 2 weeks after the surgery.

Hi @littletandme I am in a similar situation. I am just over 5 weeks post miscarriage (naturally managed) and still have positive tests. I was told to check it at 3 weeks after and it was a really dark positive. I had a scan and had a small retained product left (1.7cm). I was advised to wait another 2 weeks and had a scan this morning. The retained product is still there but my hcg is falling. preg tests very faint and had a blood test and hcg is 47 so coming down and should all be out of my system soon.

Did you have a scan today? im on another two week wait to see what happens to the retained product. If it reduces by just 3mm in the next two weeks and HCG is less than 5 they will discharge me and just let me have a period in a few weeks, but if it doesn't get smaller I will have to have the tablets to make me bleed again to try and pass it. FUN! Miscarriage is no joke! no one tells you it can drag on like this!

Sometimes levels can just take a while to come down. How far gone were you? I was 11 weeks.

Thank you for replying @jingles85.

I have an appointment at 9 tomorrow to be scanned so will know more after that I guess, they did say they would do blood tests if they don’t see any retained product. The foetus was 7 weeks but the sac continued to grow until I had the MVA at 10 weeks. It really is crazy how long it can go on for. I have my fingers crossed for you.

@littletandme sorry I thought you had posted yesterday! Fingers and toes crossed for your scan, I hope they can find out whats going on for you and its nothing to be concerned about. Keep me posted!

@Jingles85 There were no retained products at the scan yesterday and a cheap 25mUI/ml test with second wee of the day was negative but they did a blood test anyway, results were 34mUI/ml.

Then of course sod's law kicked in and I started my period yesterday so 4 weeks and 6 days after the MVA. Blood tests are being repeated tomorrow and hopefully will be less than 20 at least, but I am counting yesterday as CD1 anyway.

So just looks like it was taking a while for the HCG to leave my system and so glad to get my period!!

@littleandme Did your period start after you were at the epu?

The reason I ask is because im really confused about what is considered a real "period" after miscarriage. The nurse I spoke to said that once your body reaches less than 5mUI/ml your body begins a cycle- like it begins the whole process of developing a follicle, releasing an egg etc etc and then you have a period after that, almost like reaching low HCG is "day 1" of a cycle and your proper actual period would then come 28 ish days later. She also said its impossible to have a period when your hcg is still over 5.

I just wondered if you shared that you were bleeding with the nurses and what they might have said/thought? I find it so confusing because ive read different things, as well as women saying they got their period while they still had HCG in their systems.

I was under the impression that my proper period would come shortly after getting to less than 5 which I was using as an "argument" to not have an intervention to get rid of this last tiny RPOC, thinking that if my HCG was 47 on Tuesday then I wasn't far from getting low enough to have a period soon but the nurse said I was still technically at least 5 weeks away from an actual period if you think say a week to reach less than 5 and 4 weeks of a cycle if that makes sense?! I find it so so confusing!!

Hi everyone... I’m in a similar boat guys... I suffered a missed miscarriage and on the
11th June had I MVA, I bled for 3 weeks 2 days finishing on the 4th July.
On the 9th July (4weeks since MVA) I went back fir a scan as I took a test one week earlier that said positive still... they took a test said it was negative but I had retained product Sad 12mm by 1.2mm, they said it should come out on my next period... I asked a week later ( 16thJune) for a blood test to check HCG levels and it was 3.
But it’s coming up to six weeks now and haven’t seen a period... I bled on Friday (17th) heavyish expecting it to be my period but that was it ... one day!
I called my doctor and said he can prescribe progesterone to build the lining up to ultimately let the lining fall to force a bleed ( and hopefully retained product too) should I just wait another two weeks? Take the progesterone? Or take that as it was my period... but that brings up more worries like Ashermans syndrome :(
Oh gosh honestly miscarriage was absolutely devastating and this still dragging on makes it even worse! Hope some one can please help x
