Ectopic Pregnancy...anyone had Methotrexate injection?

Looking for a little reasurrance or anyone's experiences with Methotrexate? I've been diagnosed with an ectopic today..having another round of bloods on Friday...if not dropping it's looking likely it's going to have to be medically managed by Methotrexate.

Anyone had methotrexate before, how did you get on with it? I guess I'm feeling uneasy/worried about what's to come/how I'm going to feel afterwards.

Any stories/advice would be appreciated xx

Sorry to hear you’re going through this - massive hugs for you Flowers

I had an ectopic in April and was treated with methotrexate. I won’t lie I felt like crap the first week. Just zapped of all energy, had cramping for the first few days then it eased off. Was considered no longer pregnant after 2 weeks. Bled/spotted for 3 weeks. Hospital signed me off for 2 weeks but I ended up being signed off for one more as the emotional impact of it took a while to catch up alongside the physical recovery.

On reflection I’m quite glad I was able to be treated with methotrexate as I still have my tube. Will be able to start trying again next month.

I hope it all goes well for you xxx

Thankyou - it's not a very pleasant experience is it. I haven't had the injection yet but I just feel exhausted...did you feel like that before it too? Literally just want to sleep all the time at the moment. 😔 Xx

Yeah I did - it only got worse after the injection! But where they sign you off, you have the time to have as much rest as you need. I found sleeping whenever I had the urge to helped x

gldavis447 · 11/06/2020 16:29

Yeah, I don't work at the moment but think I'd have been the same if I did! You need time to heal from it all don't you too. I'm a full time mum to a three year old...another part of my exhaustion 🤣 xx

@gldavis447

Hi... I was diagnosed with ectopic on Tuesday after an early scan. I was just over 6 weeks it was heartbreaking.

I had the methotrexate injection on Tuesday night and have been in hospital since as I was in alot of pain.
At least once a day I got the most unbearable pain on the side where the ectopic it it was awful.
I started heavily bleeding 2 days after Injection and today I passed a huge lump. I think it was the decidual cast it wasn't pleasant to see.

I'm so tired I've never felt tiredness like this I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the below and I've felt so nauseous.

I'm hoping to get home tomorrow and hoping symptoms will slowly start to decrease

gldavis447 · 15/06/2020 09:42

@Hopefulmummie bless you, I'm so sorry you're going through this too, it really is the most distressing time isn't it. 😔 I've had a complete turnaround, my levels have dropped so now hopefully the pregnancy will resolve naturally.

Take it easy as much as you can, take one day at a time and just remember to be kind to yourself. You've been through a huge ordeal, give yourself time to heal.

Here whenever you need, sending you all my love. ♥️ Xx

@glddavis447

Thank you it really is horrible. I'm glad to hear your heading in right direction.

So this morning within half an hour I'm thinking I'm getting home today then next thing I'm in agony, feeling like I'm gonna faint and I threw up everywhere :( so consultant had to come round as they were talking about taking me for surgery. He said he doesn't think I need it atm but they've to keep me in another night just incase and I have to fast 🙄 they're hooking me up to IV fluids

beautifulmonument · 15/06/2020 10:27

I had methotrexate for an ectopic back in 2017. If I had another ectopic now I would chose surgery. But now I know I don't want any more babies so not worried about my tubes.
I felt exhausted and generally rubbish for a couple of weeks. I had awful indigestion/painful wind and absolutely dreaded eating anything.
The cramps were intensely painful like labour but only for a short time of a few hours about a week after the injection.
My bHCG levels came down more slowly than the doctors wanted and I almost had to have a second injection.
It was a very frightening time. I'm sorry you're going through it.

gldavis447 · 15/06/2020 15:13

@Hopefulmummie fingers crossed they get you sorted soon, know it's hard but you're in the best place if you're in a lot of of pain and feeling unwell. Keep me posted how you're doing.

@beautifulmonument I'm sorry you have been through this too, it really is the worst thing isn't it. Sending you love xx

@gldavis447

Hi
I finally got home home hospital this afternoon. Although my blood tests today showed that pregnancy levels have went up again :(
They were going to give me another dos of the methotrexate injection today but decided to leave it and I have to go to early pregnancy on Thursday to have bloods again and check for levels. They are going to scan me too to check ectopic hasn't got any bigger.
I'm so relieved to be home but just wish this was over me and now I don't know if I will need another injection

Hopefulmummie · 18/06/2020 14:32

So I've ended up being admitted to hospital again :( I went for my scan this morning which showed the pregnancy has got slightly bigger than last week so they told me I would more than likely require surgery as methotrexate injection hadn't worked.

Then they were asking me did I want to try another dose of methotrexate or go for surgery which is a big decision to make.
In the end my blood results came back and showed that pregnancy levels have actually went down
Methotrexate affects the liver and tests have shown mine has got worse so they don't want to have to give me it unless it's necessary.
I'm being kept in overnight to have more tests done tomorrow and if levels go down again hopefully I will be allowed home and no more treatment

OnSilverStars · 18/06/2020 14:36

Hi.

Sorry this is happening. It's so hard

However I had methotrexate for an ectopic and I had 0 symptoms and no pain. I felt absolutely normal and it sorted the ectopic quickly and easily.

The injections hurt a bit but that was it. I would recommend it. Hope yours goes as well as mine did. X

siddlydiddly · 18/06/2020 14:49

I'm so sorry you're going through this, many years ago I opted to trial the methotrexate for an ectopic pregnancy as opposed to having surgery. Previously I'd had a ruptured Fallopian tube at 12wks, it was extremely distressing. With the injection I remember having 2 at try he same time, 1 in each butt cheek. I was extremely tired and suffered period like pains and a heavy period for about 4 weeks. If I had to choose again I would go for the injections.
I hope you feel a bit better soon and are getting lots of support and help. Be kind to yourself and rest when needed. Sending a hug.

gldavis447 · 18/06/2020 15:16

@Hopefulmummie bless you, I really hope things get easier for you. It's such a hard thing to go through isn't it. Your in the best place.

I'm going through the bleeding stage now but I just feel so exhausted. General question for everyone...have you all felt just exhausted? Like a completely different level of exhausted? I'm really struggling 😔 xx

Hopefulmummie · 18/06/2020 15:58

@gldavis447

Yeah it's mad how tired it makes you every time I lay down I was falling asleep

Yesterday when I was back in my own bed I must've slept on and off for 3 hours during the day

When did you get your injection? I started properly bleeding the day after I got mine and I'm still bleeding 9 days later
I also passed this big lump I don't know what it was and also a few clots

gldavis447 · 19/06/2020 12:42

I haven't had the injection as of yet, last bloods I had last week my levels had dropped so fingers crossed the pregnancy is resolving. Had more bloods taken today so I'm hoping they've dropped some more.
Will find out later when the Dr phones.

I'm just so exhausted atm...struggling to stay awake some days looking after my 3 yr old. It's hard going Xx

Hopefulmummie · 19/06/2020 13:11

@gldavis447 oh that's good you didn't need injection as the exhaustion with it is mad I've never felt anything like this

Hopefully you levels continue to go down.

They tested my bloods again this morning and levels have dropped again to 200 so they're happy to let me home and I'll go back to epu in a few days for more tests
