Bleeding for nearly 2 months

Willow1986 · 19/05/2020 09:13

Hi, I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks. I have now been bleeding for 7 weeks. The bleeding is medium flow (slightly lighter than my normal period). I have had two internal scans but don't seem to have found anything. For the first 5 weeks of bleeding I was in quite a lot of pain on my right hand side, on one occasion I went into A&e. When I first started bleeding I was told to
manage the miscarriage from home due to covid. Then when I went in due a scan after 2 weeks they said to come back in another two weeks if pain and bleeding hadn't stopped. Went in again due another scan and they said both overies looked healthy. Then was told to come back for another scan in another two weeks (which is 10 days time from now). Nearer the begin of all this they said they would have done a d&c but would rather that it sorts itself out than for me to come into the hospital because of corona.
I just wondered if anyone else has bled this long after a miscarriage and if so, if there was a reason for it that my hospital hadn't found? I'm so frustrated now, and just desperately want everything to go back to normal so we can start trying again. Thanks so much xx

Hi @Willow1986 so sorry you are going through this. I am currently bleeding too, it will be four weeks for me on Wednesday - so not quite as long as you but also long enough that I've found it awfully frustrating. I was also 6 weeks pregnant when it happened.

Sounds like you never had one big bleed, have you? I was the same, just constant slight flow, even lighter than my periods - the only way I was able to identify WHEN the worst happened was because I was in tons of pain with cramps in bed all day for a whole weekend.

When I spoke to my midwife, she said that women who never had one big bleed tend to unfortunately take longer to stop bleeding - because the body is just taking its time to shed everything off from the uterus.

Have you done a home pregnancy test recently? Is it still positive?

Willow1986 · 19/05/2020 12:05

@primrosechill
Thanks so much for replying. So sorry to hear you are going through the same. Really hope you stop bleeding soon.
No, I've not had any big bleeds, just a very constant fairly light flow. I feel like I'm being let down but the EPU as they keep just saying "we will monitor you in 2 weeks". I had one episode in particular where I was in a huge amount of pain Ona an off for about two days - like period cramps but a lot lot worse. I thought I was going to bleed a lot but it only got a tiny bit heavier.
Not that I would wish this on anyone, but it's also nice to hear that I'm not the only one bleeding longer than the expected "maximum of two weeks" xx

I’ve been bleeding for about 8wks now, including two massively heavy bleeds which I was hospitalised for (I lost so much blood I passed out), they were at week 2 and 6 of bleeding. I was about 11wks pregnant.
EPU don’t seem worried about me at all but I’m so fed up now. A&E were fantastic both times I was taken in though.

primrosechill · 19/05/2020 13:27

I did a pregnancy test today (I've been doing one every three days for the past three weeks...) and for the first time the line is so faint that I had to squint to see it - previously it was always really obvious, even if light. I really do hope that this means i'm on my final stretch, but then again I thought that before...

I've been bleeding/spotting in such a bright red colour for the last two days that I have been genuinely wondering whether it's possible that I've skipped right through to a period - but I know that it's impossible because it's been too soon and I haven't had a negative test yet. Keeping fingers crossed for both of you - life is in enough of a limbo right now as it is, without this constant pain...

Willow1986 · 19/05/2020 15:03

Hi both,
I agree - a&e were really helpful but the EPU didn't seem concerned at all. The lady who did my last scan was really rude which didn't help at all. I hate not being able to have my husband come to appointments with me. I'm dreading going back on 2nd June to have another scan and come away still none the wiser.
Would love to know if anyone has bled for this long or longer and then it just stopped naturally without any other complications. I have read so much on the internet and starting to wonder if I have fribroids or cysts that they aren't picking up on the scan. For the first two weeks it was suspected ectopic but they still left me. I just don't understand!! Since they had ruled thank goodness. It has been mentioned that maybe there is something left that is buried in the lining of uterus but I don't really know what that means.
Really hope you both stop bleeding too, fingers crossed for the three of us.
I'm doing a pregnancy test tomorrow, was still faintly positive when I did it 4 days ago.

It took me ages before I got a negative test.
It seems very hard to get support at the moment.
Fingers crossed it’ll all be sorted soon and we’ll get our babies.

primrosechill · 21/05/2020 16:12

So, I spoke too soon once again!

I'm at 4w1d of bleeding now and just passed a big blood clot (size of a plum?) out of nowhere, after weeks of just light bleeding. I didn't pass anything this big even at the height of abdominal pain when the miscarriage actually started.

I really do hope that this is the last of it but more worried that this is indeed some sort of a complication gahhhhh... let's see what my body does now for the next few hours. So fed up with calling midwives, going to EPUs, having scans - just need this wrapped up now. When people say they had a miscarriage and can pinpoint an exact time, it seems like I'm living on a different planet. I HAVE BEEN HAVING a miscarriage for a month now...

Just needed to vent. Hope all you ladies are doing a bit better.

primrosechill · 21/05/2020 16:14

@Willow1986 did you do your pregnancy test? Oh the irony of how badly we want to NOT see that second line, after months of trying and wanting it on that silly test so badly....

cariaaad · 21/05/2020 16:45

So sorry you are going through this, especially at the moment. When I had my (1st) miscarriage I bled on and off for over 2 months. I'm sorry to say the EPU were not much help or sympathetic, and I lost faith in their care. Pregnancy test remained positive for ages, can't remember just how long but do know the pain of praying for the negative result.
At about 2 month post miscarriage I actually passed a large piece of tissue, was really quite frightening as I felt it come out as I was walking into work. Sorry if TMI but it looked like a piece of meat rather than a blood clot. I am guessing it was some retained tissue which had not passed with the miscarriage, and I also guess that was why I had the positive pregnancy test for so long. I went back to the EPU and it really felt like they did not believe me, but trust me I did not imagine that coming out of me!!
If you go back I would insist on an internal scan to make sure there is no retained tissue.
I hope it resolves soon and totally understand what you are going through 💛

primrosechill · 21/05/2020 17:01

Thank you for a wonderfully caring message @cariaaad - I did wonder if it was a tissue or blood clot, I felt a little bit freaked out so threw it into the loo a bit too quickly - now I wish I had examined it closer ha.

Glendaruel · 21/05/2020 17:14

My second miscarriage I bled for 6 weeks including a night in hospital, then was given a d &c and had a small amount of bleeding for week. My thoughts are with you.

annamart23 · 22/05/2020 15:50

It's massively frustrating and emotionally draining, but doesn't seem that uncommon to bleed for a long time, despite what it says in all the info out there. I bled for more than 2 months, and think it did end in a light period. I hadn't been doing pregnancy tests. But when I called the EPU and spoke to a nurse, she suggested it as a possibility, and it kind of made sense.

Hope it all resolves for you really soon, and you get back to feeling (physically) normal. Good luck xxx

Emsnewmum · 22/05/2020 20:09

Hi all,

Sorry to hear what you are all going through or have been through. It really does sound like every misscarriage is different for all, i find it strange how our bodies are doing so much and we just can't see. That's the scary bit for me I've been bleeding for 3 weeks now and it started off so light until I had two nights of pain I have never felt before.

Because my last Misscarriage was over really fast I thought I was prepared and I really wasnt my husband had to go to the local garage for extra pain killers and pads. There is so much talk of if you fill a pad in an hour it's too much blood but when I called the epu they just said it sounded like the main event. I then passed lots of big clots and the pain dissapeared instantly it I phoned again an hour later because I was bleeding so much but they said give it a few hours and then call back luckily it slowed down. A week later and no pain but even more blood and more and bigger clots. And again today I passed alot of big clots headaches and whousing in my ears but the epu dont seem worried and said they can scan me when the bleeding stops but I'm worried how many times I have to go through this amount of blood loss before I should get it checked out. Is anyone else having this sort of issues with clots.

Elouera · 22/05/2020 20:39

Sorry for your loss OP.

Bit strange they haven't seen a retained product that is bleeding, but sometimes they are very small but still cause issues. If you had fibroids or cysts, they'd be visible on the scan. BUT, IMO, the scans I've had at EPU's have been fairly brief and no where as in depth as an ultrasound clinic or gynae specialist type unit.

My 1st loss was at 11 weeks and I bled for 2mths. It was a constant reminder every time I went to the loo of what had happened and I just wanted it to stop. I was also told to only use pads till the bleeding had completely stopped for more than 2 days, and I absolutely hate pads! 2 weeks later, my AF started and out came a product of conception.

I did a great deal of reading which said that the body will expel the products, even if it takes several cycles to do so. I had no pain, fever, odour and also wasn't told to do another pregnancy test, so had no idea it wasn't normal.

Did the hospital take blood tests to check your hCG level?

Willow1986 · 28/05/2020 11:48

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your support. Last Friday I got my first negative pregnancy test, and then on Sunday I had a really heavy bleed and was in a lot of pain. Then by yesterday I had stopped bleeding completely. I'm so scared it going to start again so I'm taking it really easy over these next few days.
Just over a week ago I had an unexpected call from the EPU saying a higher up consultant has looked at previous scans and has said that there is nothing wrong and that I'm to be discharged. I thought that was really bad considering at the time I was still getting positive tests and was still bleeding.
If I do get pregnant again, I am a bit wary of choosing that hospital as I don't feel like I was well looked after at all.
We are going to start trying again next month. I feel so relieved and really hope you all stop bleeding soon and get pregnant when you are all ready xxx

Hi currently going through this now I know this was a few months ago but I'm on week 6 of still bleeding driving me mad I was just wondering when eventually did it completely stop? X

Lemondropsandgumdrops · 12/07/2020 20:34

I’m currently on week 8 of bleeding also. @Willow1986 when did it stop eventually for you?

cmt1297 · 10/08/2020 20:08

Hi all, I miscarried on Jun 1st, over 8 weeks ago. I was just shy of 13 weeks. I have had non-stop bleeding since then. It varies day to day whether it is light or heavy, but it still has not stopped.
When MC initially happened I went into ER because i lost so much blood i passed out. They did a US and transvaginal US and did not find any retaining tissue. I don't understand why it is taking so long, OBGYN does not seem to be too concerned.
It seems like you gals have had this same issue, and I am glad I am not alone, but at the same time am SO sorry for what you are going through, because if you are like me, it's nothing but a constant reminder.
Just wondering if anybody has bled this long before? If so, did it just slowly come to an end?

LemonCurdLady · 10/08/2020 20:23

Hi @cmt1297 - and everyone else who has had prolonged bleeding - thought I would share. I had a miscarriage October last year, at 11 weeks pregnant, and bled for 12 weeks in total. I had a pretty in depth scans after I basically threw a hissy fit at my doctor, cried my eyes out, said I hadn’t been warned it would take so long. I was sick and tired of being reminded every time I went to the loo of what I had lost. Anyway, there was absolutely nothing wrong, the consultant was very reassuring and said unfortunately some women just take longer to heal then others. It tapered off around 11 weeks then just stopped one day. I did start eating lots of anti-inflammatory foods, took all my vitamins, cut down on sugar, and started Pilates. I can’t say if it helped me heal, but it made me feel more in control of my body again. I really hope it ends soon for you, wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Look after yourself x

cmt1297 · 10/08/2020 20:49

That really makes me feel better. Thank you for sharing! ❤️

Lemondropsandgumdrops · 10/08/2020 21:20

Hi! I also bled for 72 days (So just over 10 weeks) and posted on here a month or so ago. I also went to the GP and basically cried because I was so, so sick of it. She prescribed 3 months worth of Provera, but instructing me I needed to use alternative contraception with this as it can cause issues with conceiving on it and also that it may affect fertility after. Obviously I was reluctant but needed to do it as I’d been bleeding so long. Ironically the day I picked up the prescription the bleeding stopped of it’s own accord and I’ve now not bled for a few weeks again. Interesting I got a blazing positive OPK and my temperatures have also indicated ovulation at what is essentially day 80 something of my cycle, so waiting to see the outcome of that currently.

Unfortunately I think it is just a case of some women’s bodies take a lot longer to heal than others. I’m sorry to anyone else who is having a similar problem :(

FrankieChips · 17/08/2020 16:44

Hi Willow1986. I had a miscarriage on the 7th of July and I'm still bleeding. Have had two scans at the EPU since and they see some retained product. Last scan was today. They mentioned doing a D&C but then said there was so little left that there was no point. I was given antibiotics.

Interestingly the nurse who saw said there was a lot of women having the same issue recently and they didn't know why.

I am having light cramps on my right side too which is where I usually get period pain so I thought this was just my period. They haven't taken any bloods recently. It's frustrating.
