Discharge after miscarriage

I’m 4 weeks post my second natural miscarriage. Bled for about 2.5 weeks and then it changed to brown spotting and then brown discharge. I have now been having brown stringy discharge for the last few days. EPU won’t see me because of lockdown so I never got a scan post miscarriage. I was prescribed penicillin Incase I had an infection and the GP made referral for gynaecology but that could take 3-4 weeks. I’m freaking out and It’s really getting me down. Has anyone had the same issue?

@whatsgoingon22, I had MVA about 4 weeks ago and was left with some retained tissue. I passed this at home (a 1.5 cm lump of tissue) a week later, so about 3 weeks ago. I was also scanned at that point and told it's all gone, but they could still see some blood in there. Noticeable bleeding stopped about 1.5-2 weeks ago, but I'm constantly getting some brownish-yellow discharge. It has never stopped. Sometimes stringy, sometimes more lumpy and mainly when I wipe. I would think that as long there is no abdominal/back pain or smell or fever, there is no infection and it just takes times. I read here that some people have brown spotting/discharge for 6-8 weeks.

@Wireless77 thanks for your comment.... I’m just feeling so worried about it because I was never scanned so I don’t know if it’s any retained products, an infection, something else or nothing to worry about. This is my second m/c and last time it was all over in two weeks and didn’t have any brown spotting or discharge. Are you planning to wait and see if yours tails off?

@whatsgoingon22, I believe every miscarriage is different (sounds horrible). It is most likely nothing to worry about as you're not bleeding, not in pain and have no fever. I can understand though why you're worried. Is there any way you could try and have a private scan? I'm having a phone appointment with my consultant next week and will ask about the discharge. Will let you know.

@Wireless77 thank you for your reply again! I think the stringy consistency was due to ovulating so that eased my mind a little as the clear blue test came up as positive yesterday. The brown discharge seems to have tailed off a bit today but it’s done that a few times and comes back. My legs are aching every day and I have no idea if it’s linked. I think the lockdown is making me more paranoid about things that could go wrong since I haven’t been seen. I’m going to phone the hospital again tomorrow and see what they say. I think the private clinics near me are closed at the moment with everything going on. Good luck with your consultant and I hope you’re feeling better x

I had surgical removal under spinal block after 2 medical didn't work 2 weeks ago on Friday. Had 'blood' bleeding for a bit, and now almost 2.5 weeks on, it is continuing as yours is.

It's really pissing me off as I am so sick of wearing sanitary products. Had pantiliners for about 2 weeks of very light bleeding before they confirmed the miscarriage and it'll be 3 weeks weds of wearing towels.

I have been told to do a test after 3 weeks which is next sat, no-one has mentioned a scan, but maybe that's because maybe surgical usually gets it all out.

Please keep posted on here if anyone gets any advice about this, I'm not sure if normal either and if still happening when I take the test on sat, think I'll query it.

@whatsgoingon22, @amyspames, about 3 weeks after my MVA and 2 weeks after the last bit came away at home, my pregnancy test was still positive and showed 1-2 weeks pregnant (I think Clearblue levels for this are 10 to 154). My level before the miscarriage was above 12,000. A week later it was negative. So it does take a little time. My consultant did not seem to be worried about the spotting at all even if it is now a month since the procedure and a little over 3 weeks since I expelled the last of it. They said it can sometimes take 6 to 8 weeks to clear up. I will wait and see for now.

@Wireless77 who did you tell about the positive result? I know they said to take the test, but can't remember what I am supposed to do if it is positive - ring the gp or the hospital, I'm not aware that I still have a consultant there any more if I've been discharged.

I hope it doesn't continue as long as yours, that sounds like an awful long time, and pads are getting to be seriously uncomfortable, going to have to move away from the thin always-type ones to the old fashioned bulky ones to try and get things back to normal.

@amyspames, I was not told to do a pregnancy test at all (I had a scan privately after I expelled the last bit of tissue and knew all was gone). I did it on my own initiative, just to know for myself. If your test comes up positive 3 weeks after surgical removal, I'd say that calling the guys who did the procedure is a good idea. They will have to suggest next steps for you. My discharge/spotting is ongoing, but minor, so I haven't been wearing pads for over a week. I need a liner some days, but it really is mainly when wiping. Very much hoping that it will tail off soon and I can try and move on.

Hey @whatsgoingon22 I have also had two miscarriages. I had surgical management both times. The brown spotting/ discharge post surgery went on for 17 days last time. It's normal for it to go on for ages, natural miscarriages can take up to three months the doctor told me! Now it's 2 weeks today since my ERPC and its still there mainly when I wipe but I also think I might ovulate soon as I had some brown ewcm and I can feel my sex drive returning. I think maybe that is what you saw with the stringy brown discharge - it could be ewcm mixed with old blood. We are going to start trying again straight away, I would loooooove to be one of those women that get pregnant straight after a miscarriage... I'm certain I won't though.

My brown discharge has stopped a few days now thankfully - it seems to have stopped around the time of ovulation (so I don’t know whether it was hormone related or not). I finally managed to get an appointment for a scan next week (6weeks after my natural m/c) so I’m just going to go and see if everything is okay🙏🏻Hope you’re all feeling okay xxx

@whatsgoingon22, good to hear you are doing better. Mine is still ongoing, only a little and when wiping, but still there. It's 5 weeks since my MVA, but the last bit came away naturally a week after the procedure, so I guess this is one of the reasons I'm still spotting. My consultant does not seem concerned at all. Had a LOT of discharge a few days ago, mix of clear and brown. Now thinking it may have been ovulation. Kind of looking forward to getting my period to clear out everything properly and move on. I keep my fingers crossed your scan will be fine and that everyone gets their rainbow baby very soon.

Hi, sorry @whatsgoingon22 been a hectic few days!
I'm ok, started back at work (virtually) last Monday, which has been good for a distractor, but don't really want to join any team meetings at the moment, which sounds a bit pathetic, I don't mind chatting on a one to one basis with video, but don't want 10+ people all looking at me and for anyone to ask me if I'm ok, as hardly going to tell the truth. Plus I don't feel like participating in the idle chit chat either, which I used to enjoy given we are all stuck at home, but now just want to get on with my work.
Bleeding / discharge still continues, and will have been 4 weeks tomorrow wearing pads, and almost 2 weeks before that with liners. It's really irritating my skin. Read that with surgery you are only supposed to bleed for 1-2 weeks, and longest time is 3 weeks, so if I get to Friday and still continuing it'll be 4 weeks by then.

@whatsgoingon22 glad you got a scan booked in. 6 weeks after your mc has been a long wait though. My brown discharge also stopped just before I ovulated, I'm 5 dpo now.

@Wireless77 that does sound like ovulation, similar to mine. Hope you're back to normal soon

@amyspames I know exactly how you feel about the video chat. I ignored everyone but by partner for a while and the thought of speaking to someone made me panic. But slowly I went back to nearly normal. I know it's not exactly the same as you but I relate to what you describe. Are your hpts still positive? Mine are 22 days post ERPC. Are you going to contact the hospital if you're still bleeding on Friday? Wearing pads for ages is the worst. Have you seen those absorbent knickers for periods? Modibodi is one brand. I have them, they are a bit weird but better than wearing pads. They are expensive, £20 I think, but you could maybe wash the same pair every day.

Hi everyone I’m really sorry for your loss 😢❤️.. I really just need abit of advice, back in May I had a missed miscarriage at 9 weeks. I had to have it surgically removed. I didn’t bleed much at all after maybe for one day but very light, I’ve had unprotected sex since , and my periods are normally every 28 days , I’m now on day 31 since still with no bleeds at all , on day 28 (when period should of been) I had a tiny show in my underwear of brown discharge, then nothing at all after that. Today day 31 when I wiped I had brown discharge that was this morning , and then now again nothing at all . It’s driving me insane 🤦🏼‍♀️! Does anyone know what this could be please . Xx

Are you sure you’re not pregnant again? Have you taken a test?
I’d take a test just in case but it may have been a period but just not your usual one because of all you have been through and hormones etc. I wouldn’t worry too much yet but if you’re feeling unsure give your docs a call but I’d say it’s just hormones. It will normalise don’t worry ❤️

@whatsgoingon22 thank you for your reply ❤️.. I think it could be to early to test wouldn’t it? And it’s literally brown old blood nothing like a period or not enough it’s tiny bits , but the doctors said my period would arrive around the normal time it would and it would be really heavy. That’s y I’m so confused , I’ve also been tracking my ovulation with clear blue tests and I keep getting constant flashing smiley face ? Xxx

Hi, just joined this site and i feel as though I’m in the dark. I tried to conceive in October and fell pregnant straight away! 8 weeks later I had slight spotting, went to A&E and was told I have an IPUV and to come back a week later. I started to bleed the next day and bled for a week, went for my second appointment and was told that I had retained tissue around 1cm. I took misoprostol and nothing happened a week later I took another dose and bled a little for a couple days and I think I passed out the retained tissue. I have since had mucous discharge which had a tinge of blood in it. I don’t know what this is. I am trying to conceive again without waiting for my first period post miscarriage. If I still had the tissue would I still ovulate? When can I expect my Hcg levels to go back to zero.
