Miscarriage - too easy

Hi everyone,

Miscarriage began yesterday evening at 9 weeks. First miscarriage so very unsure what to expect. Evening was cramping and bright red blood like a heavy period, then lost a lumpy large bit of tissue 2-3 hours later. Still bleeding bright red but not half as bad as I expected... now anxiety is eating me up, that something is wrong and there is no way it only be that. Scan to confirm miscarriage isn't until Tuesday morning. Any advice so appreciated. The tears keep coming.

It does sound like you have passed the sac, particularly if the cramps have stopped. G

There's really nothing you can do before the scan so just be kind to yourself

I'm sorry this has happened op. Yes, what you describe is often all that happens - cramps, bleeding, passing some tissue and it's over. Take care of yourself , I'm sending a hug .

I have had two miscarriages, both at 9 weeks and both medically managed via the tablets/pessaries.

First one was exactly as you describe. Physically no drama at all really, though obviously mentally more difficult.

Second one was completely different. Several hours of rocking on all fours in the bathroom with what I am sure were mild contractions, but still couldn't talk through them. Bled for much longer, and passed a massive tissue/clot 10 days later while still bleeding. Totally different.

I really hope you're having the easier version of my two experiences. Still totally traumatic, but can be physically complete without much physical drama.

Take care of yourself. Once the physical stuff is finished with sometimes the mental symptoms take longer to heal.

My 8,5 week miscarriage wasn't really bad. My 11.4 week miscarriage took forever and made me feel awful. I don't know if every miscarriage is different in intensity or that the length of pregnancy has anything to do with it.

Be kind to yourself, make yourself a nice cup of tea and a hot water bottle and watch a box set or whatever on the couch to calm down. Crying is a good thing though, it means you are processing what happened to you.

Thank you everyone. Up and about now, just toddling round the house keeping myself busy. In laws have whisked our two year old off to the coast for a wee trip out, which has been great. Really hoping that this steady bleed is all I'll have after events of last night.

Major changes since I last posted here and feeling more distressed than I've ever felt in my life.

Following my original OP, I went to hospital for follow up scan to check everything was away - sonographer found a happy baby with a strong heartbeat (measuring six + weeks, which fits better with our dates). I should be grateful. I should be delighted. But I'm still having two or three days or cramping / bleeding every couple of days. Scan showed a haemorrhage which sonographer said was in the 'right place' not to affect baby. Twins were a possibility.

I feel like I'm losing my mind. I worked from home last week but need to be back on Monday. How do I cope please. I feel like it's only a matter of time. 12 week scan isn't until mid March.

That is good news, but so worrying still. Please try to be kind to yourself, try to rest as much as you can, take any help you can get with your toddler and housework. It's easier said than done but try not to worry or get stressed and step away from google.

Good luck with everything, I have heard of a very similar situation where they now have a gorgeous 6 month old baby so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you

Also I think it might be asking for another scan in 2 weeks time, don't be afraid to contact the early pregnancy unit if you're unsure of anything or if there are any changes.

Dreading work tomorrow. This is just all consuming. No idea how I will concentrate when every twinge is a distraction. It's exhausting.

I had this with my first pregnancy and I know that fear. I had lots of sudden bleeds in early pregnancy but all was fine and she was born healthy although a little early.
It was a subchronionic hematoma in my case. I found resting helped (I got signed off work for a week or two) and actually in the US where I was initially treated advised bedrest. Keep going for scans to reassure if you need.

They didn't call it that specifically but from all my googling it sounds (and looks) just like it. I assume they'll confirm it at 12 week scan if we make it till then. Can I ask if your bleeding continued through the full pregnancy? Terrified at the thought of bed rest/ going to work.

Hey! @MrsMyreton it lasted from weeks 5-9 so only first trimester. So scary. Had taken 3 years to conceive. Later found out I had severe endo and so maybe that was the cause.
Fortunately my Pregnancy continued completely normally after the bleeding. Baby arrived few weeks early too which from my research seemed to anecdotally be more likely. Best of luck and do try to rest as much as you can. Really hope it all works out xxxx

Posted about the same thing in Jan. Had a medical mc which resulted in one evening of heavy bleeding, including few clots. Next day was down to spotting. Surely that couldn’t have been it. After a week or so I started light brown discharge again (panty liner light). After a week or so of that, one morning it suddenly turned bright red and soon had a full blown miscarriage bleed again. This time worse pain and much more clots. I believe this was when my body naturally expelled the pregnancy (blighted ovum). So, for me the first time had been too easy indeed.

Hi @Jmommy sorry to hear about your experience. I guess that's what I'm worried about. It's so difficult to get up and go to work etc. with this hanging over me. Even though I've seen the baby, with a heartbeat and in the right place, the bleeding is just making me so so anxious. Like I'm going to lose it very soon.

@MrsMyreton .. I feel like I am going through the same! I can only pray that I end up with the same result as you.
This is my second pregnancy after a MMC in October. I have currently been bleeding for 12 days on and off, I have the slightest cramps but no different to ordinary period pains. The blood ranges from bright red to pink. I had a scan when bleeding started and the nurses stated the pregnancy and the sac looks as though it should and is in the right place, however could not detect a heartbeat due to be being too early. (I was 5/6 weeks) I am now just under 8 and praying they can pick that heartbeat up tomorrow. These 12 days have been absolute torture with my mind constantly playing tricks on me, one day I feel pregnant the next I don't. Hoping for a positive result however can not help but fear the worst after my last MC x

Hi @kayjxo so sorry to hear you're going through the same, and for your loss last year. This limbo is the worst isn't it?

I still have dark brown bleeding and then I have cramps every few days. I'm totally up and down. I've heard wonderful stories from friends etc. of similar experiences but it only lifts me for a while. Last night I was obsessing over how much/what colour etc and spent the evening crying to OH.

Can I ask if your scan is private? I'm currently waiting for the 12 weeks scan (I'll be eight weeks tomorrow) and hospital have said they won't scan again unless circumstance changes.

Totally agree! People are so reassuring but like you, it only lifts me for a while. I find myself fixated on looking on the internet aswell which i know is the worst thing to do.
My scan is not private tomorrow. I did have a private one in my last pregnancy as early as 6 weeks only due to being over excited and they picked the heartbeat up straight away with an abdo ultrasound! Their equipment was amazing so I do wish after my last scan at the hospital when they couldn't detect it that I went on and booked private again just for peace of mind instead of waiting these long 12 days. But what will be will be!
I'm an impatient person so if was anxious like you I'd be tempted to book private, 4 weeks is a long time for your mind to be on overdrive to wait for a next scan. Really hope everything goes well in your pregnancy x

Sudden bleed again tonight. Told to come in to hospital and to bring an overnight bag. Thankfully, after exam, bleeding had slowed and cervix was closed so now home. Back in tomorrow for a scan so see if baby is okay. I have no idea how I'm supposed to sleep tonight. I should be just over ten weeks and finally thought this was clearing up. This is horrendous.

@MrsMyreton I know your last comment was a couple of weeks ago, but how are you doing? Is everything working out ok?

I'll be 15 weeks this weekend and baby is still happy and healthy. Despite my two bleeds and continued brown discharge!

At dating scan the remainder of the bleed was still there but they said it was small and unlikely to harm baby. Still anxious most days as bleeding during pregnancy is a brand new thing for me! Due 19 September.

@MrsMyreton congratulations, that's wonderful news!

I was drawn to your OP as it mirrored exactly what I have experienced the last couple of days. HCG is way down though as test is showing BFN now. I came looking for similar miscarriage experiences and found a glimmer of hope. I'm sure, due to BFN and a complete absence of symptoms now, that my scan will confirm the miscarriage, but it's good to know that sometimes, just sometimes, these things work out.

I wanted to enjoy every second of my second (and last!) pregnancy but this has been really difficult. The not-knowing is just awful isn't it?

@MrsMyreton it really is. I'll feel better after my scan tomorrow when I see what I know will be an empty womb

This is (was) my first pregnancy and we have so longed for a baby. DH had testicular cancer so with only 1 ball we weren't even sure we could get pregnant. The only joy in this situation is knowing that we can. I just can't believe I'm going to have to go back to ovulation test sticks and the dreaded TWW again. But, I'm hopeful and optimistic that it will happen for us eventually.
