Hysteroscopy - Has anyone had this?

Hi again,

Just found out that after ERPC (in which no tissue was removed), there is still something in my womb but they cant tell if it is retained products or a polyp which has grown due to retained products as well as a thick lining. I had a MMC 8 weeks ago so they have now decided that this is the next option.

Has anyone had this after a MC? They have said it would be moderately painful but I am not sure this is really true. What happens after? Any stories much appreciated x

Sorry to hear about the miscarriage.

I had a colposcopy recently due to suspected fibroids. It was like going to the dentist.

put you in a chair, a nurse tries to distract you while they get a camera in, not really painful, wasn’t as bad as a smear.

Once they found what they were looking for they asked me if I waned to see them. Which was great but obviously the big question is how big they were because in the screen they look enormous but they may be the size of a pea.

The doctor explained everything in detail once the camera was out, they told me I was going to be called again for a gynaecology appointment, a nurse offered me a cup of tea straight afterwards and lots of lovely magazines. After 10 minutes I got back to my car and drove to work.

My partner came with me (we had a cancer scare in the summer so he wanted to be there in case there were some bad news) but I was the only one with a partner there.

I hope the procedure is the same for me. To say I have a low pain threshold is an understatement. I find the whole situation so frustrating as I simply dont understand what is happening and why. We waited a long time to get pregnant with this baby and were devastated when we MC so were so keen to try again. Now I'm unsure I'll even be able to get pregnant again.

I had a hysteroscopy on 4 December after having 2 mmcs this year. I had mine under general anesthetic and they did remove a polyp (no idea I had one but might explain my most recent miscarriage) but I've not seen my consultant yet to discuss it.

If you can, either ask for sedation or general anesthetic. I had an hsg in the summer with no anesthetic and it was very painful. I had cramps for a couple of days after but were quite mild.

I'm similar to you, we've been ttc for 2 years now and it took nearly 18 months to concieve. Hoping next year is better for us both Flowers

I had one a while ago due to recurrent miscarriages. I was told to just take paracetamol as thats all I would need but it was so painful. I would say that as soon as they remove the camera etc that most of the pain goes quite quickly and I was left with a period like cramp. But if you can get stronger meds l would take them

I've had 2 hystroscopies but not after miscarriages. Both were a bit uncomfortable but with both I was back at work within an hour.

Thanks so much for your messages @plixy @VenusStarr and @EmmaGrundyForPM. I've been told that as it is an 'investigative' procedure, I wont have any GA although the gynae nurse said if they do see a polyp, they will remove it if they can. Otherwise, it will be another op under GA. To be honest, I just find the whole thing so stressful and I am driving myself crazy about this.

May I ask if anyone has successfully conceived after this procedure? I was also told I have a retroverted uterus which I was never had before and after looking on google (I know!) I saw this can be caused by scar tissue so I am now terrified that this has been caused by the ERPC.

I thought this appointment with a consultant would be helpful but it has just left me with more questions than answers. This whole thing has just escalated so quickly and I just feel in complete limbo.

@VenusStarr I hope 2020 is good to you and you get answers too. We had been ttc for 18 months too. It's so frustrating isnt it? Flowers

I've got a retroverted arcuate uterus @Isittimeforbubblesyet we've not ttc since my last mc in September as I was waiting for the operation, this is our first month trying again 🤞

It is stressful - I was due to have the hysteroscopy in the summer but found out I was pregnant the week before the procedure. I got a leaflet with my letter and it did say I could book it under general anesthetic, if you're really anxious, might be worth checking?

I've read a lot about polyps and think they are linked to mc. I've started to feel more hopeful since having the procedure. It's really frustrating and scary, trying to stay hopeful that I can concieve again and I get to bring my baby home, hope we both do xx

I had one after 3 MMC and an operation to remove a septum in my womb.

They told me to just take paracetamol 20 minutes before the procedure. F**k the stars it was painful. Like someone else said, most of the pain stopped after the camera was removed but I had bad cramping for the rest of the day. If they can give you something stronger, I would take it. Otherwise, take someone with you to hand hold, if you can.

I had a hysteroscopy but not after MC (big blood clots and suspected fibroids which they located and removed).

It was done under GA so no real pain. I went home same day and just needed paracetamol for period pain type cramps.

Are you able to request GA?

@VenusStarr I have my fingers crossed for you!

Oh god, I'm not feeling g great about this. The consultant and nurse were pretty insistent that it would be done without GA but I havent received my appointment yet so hopefully, it might give me and option then. They also said I couldn't have someone with me as people have fainted before but I would have a nurse.

I have to have a hysteroscopy mid January but I have read that is a horrendous experience done without pain relief. Some women seem to tolerate it but the majority have a horror story. Can anyone confirm GA is the way to do it. Many thanks x

Hi @Kryssyw no advice here but in the same boat. I have GA for my ERPC which was fine but they couldn't find a vein so my hands were covered in bruises for weeks. Tbh it was all quite traumatic but I think it was a unique experience.

May I ask how long you have had to wait for your appointment and if the option of GA was on your appointment letter?

I'm really sorry you're going through this too. It really does sound horrible doesn't it?

Thank you for your reply x My appointment came through very quick, two week wait. My best friend does these procedures for a living and talked me through it. But I went on the internet and read horror stories. I think I’ll attempt it and see how I get on. My veins are also terrible, I have the same problem as you. Jan 15th is my appointment. I have thickening of my endometrium. I hope you are ok now.
I’m new to this and not sure if you’re getting this reply!!!!!

hi Isittimeforbubblesyet please have a look at www.facebook.com/HysteroscopyA/?epa=SEARCH_BOX . you are legally entitled to a GA and its in the NHS constitution the consultant and nurse can be as insistent as they like if you want GA you can have one you might have to threaten say litigation rather than sue and take there pin and GMC numbers there are good and bad hysteroscopy clinics but there are no good ones that don,t allow some one in with you it,s nothing to do with fainting its becuse they often demand they stop when they see there loved one in pain . my advice and i understand if you chose not to take it is defnatly not to have outpatient simply because they can not be trusted they have lied to you at least twice

Hi, I’m booked in for this procedure without GA mid January also. After my miscarriage I had a scan due to having a very heavy period, worse than the miscarriage bleeding. They found a very small fibroid and polyp and offered this due to heavy period. I think the period may have been like that because it was the first one after my miscarriage at 10 weeks.
I’m not good with any sort of internal procedure and still feeling quite traumatised from whole experience.

I don’t know whether I should ask if I can have it under ga?

I had this exact scenario after an erpc I kept bleeding. Turned out to be retained products so I had a hysteroscopy under general was absolutely fine no more painful than the original erpc and was v glad to had an end to the whole thing. Wishing you the best

Also just to add my original erpc was due to a miscarriage at 11+6 in the September and the hysteroscopy was in November after constant bleeding in between

I have had one but under GA. Some abnormal bleeding and, because I have previously had pre-cancerous cells removed, they did a trans-vaginal scan and a polyp showed up. They did a hysteroscopy , looked at the womb, removed the polyp and the womb lining under GA. It was all fine and it was never suggested that it was done without a GA.

Sorry to say I've had two, four months apart, and the pain the first time (polyp removal included) was unexpectedly bad but manageable. Second time round I nearly hit the ceiling and had a day off sick afterwards (another polyp removed). I would never go through that again without serious anaesthesia.

Lack of pain relief for hysteroscopies has been raised in parliament and there is a campaign to ensure those booked in for them understand they can insist on pain relief up to asking for a general anaesthetic.
