Retained tissue - anyone not had surgery

I have retained products of conception (apparently a smallish amount of 2cm) and was wondering if anyone else has had this and gone on to loose this naturally rather than have ERPC? Is it possible if my body has held onto this bit that it could still pass naturally or will it stay until removed surgically?

I had retained products 2 years ago and I just carried on bleeding but the retained products actually never came away. I had to have 7 tablets a day for 5 days to prevent an infection in the hope that it would just come away itself.

Has your EPAU internally scanned you? I was kept in overnight when I had retained products.

@mlax thank you for your reply. Yes I've had two scans 4 weeks apart now in the hope it would come away and now they've said to have an ERPC. Did you end up with this procedure? How was it?

I had retained products two weeks after my mc began; I had the op but it was very quick and although I had a general anaesthetic I came round very quickly and was glad that it was all over, tbh. I am very sorry for your loss.

I had retained products after my first medical management and so they repeated the medical management a second time sent me home again and then scanned me three days later, I had then passed everything. I found the whole thing traumatic not knowing what was going on, and felt I didn't really get told what was normal or what to expect. Three weeks after the miscarriage I got a negative pregnancy test( up until then I tested most days and it was positive) and Four weeks exactly from the date of the miscarriage I got my period. I hope it all works out for you x

@NoNeedToArgue How did you feel after the general anaesthetic? Will I feel crappy or will I be able to at least enjoy the evening?

I had retained products after my medical management, around 2cm in size also. 3/4 weeks after the medical management I was booked in for ERPC and I passed it in the waiting room just before I went up to surgery. I had the surgery anyway as my lining was too thick still.

So you definitely can wait but I was advised to have the ERPC due to risk of infection and as I'd been bleeding for weeks.

The ERPC was absolutely fine and much less traumatic than the medical management. I went in at 7am, surgery at 9am and was home by midday. I had no pain whatsoever unlike the MOMC and had a very light period for a week or two.

Also I was fine after the anesthetic, I went into town and did some shopping that afternoon

Thank you for your reply. I don't really want to talk to anyone IRL about it so I don't want to tell anyone about the surgery if I don't have to and I'm due to see family that evening. However I am going in in the afternoon not morning. But glad to hear that you felt good afterwards.

Also did anyone have a urethral catheter in? I'm assuming as it's a general anaesthetic that you have to have one but it's not mentioned anywhere?

Sorry you're going through this, I had an erpc about 14 months ago.
It's over in approx 30 minutes, possibly less as it's a small amount of retained products.

I honestly can't remember if I got a catheter or not. I got released 6 hours after I went in as they wanted to monitor me.

I can't remember what actually happened... I know I didn't have surgery so it must have happened naturally. This was 2 months after it had all happened though I was in and out of hospital for a few months checking that I didn't have infections and more scans etc...

Hi OP. I work in theatres and have seen many ERPCs. You won't need a catheter because it's so quick, the procedure itself only takes about 10-15 minutes. After the anaesthetic you're usually groggy for half an hour or so but by lunch you'll be pretty much back to normal.

Thank you everyone for your replies and kind messages. I'm off to bed with a headache, I assume stress induced but soon it will all be over hopefully.

@OverTheHandlebars thank you for replying, that eases my mind a lot. I'm so worried I'll be 'out of it' for the rest of the day. Well evening, as I have an afternoon time for the surgery.

I remember being sick after my last general (although a bigger operation) will they give me anti sickness medicine if I tell them this or does it not matter?

Very late to reply but thought I would update the thread for anyone looking in the future.

The EPRC went as well as can be expected. The staff were lovely and I felt well looked after, they gave me anti sickness before I woke up and honestly I didn't feel sick at all. Didn't have a catheter either, as mentioned above it is over so quickly. I think it was about 45 mins from when I went in to when I woke up properly.
I felt fine after a couple of hours and was completely fine by the evening (physically).
I felt relief that it was all over and I could 'move on'. I bled for about a week afterwards which I didn't think would happen as it was such a small amount I assumed I would just have a little bleed, I started to think that maybe it hadn't worked but I took a test and it was negative.
