Periods after miscarriage

Anyone else found theirs are really different after?

My cycles are shorter - 31 days compared to over 50! Length is shorter - this last one just 3.5 days when they used to be 6-7 days. More symptoms - nausea, sore boobs etc.

Hello. I'm sorry for your loss. I suffered a missed miscarriage in January and my period are yet to return as normal. My cycle is much shorter than it was before and my last period was so light I'm not even sure I'd class it as a period! I'm in the same position as you - just wish my body would return to its 'normal'

VenusStarr · 08/05/2019 11:35

I've only had one period since my mmc but it was noticeably heavier and I felt really unwell the day before - high blood pressure, dizziness and nausea. It lasted around the same time as usual. But, I am cd 8 now and think I'm ovulating or will be in the next day or so. Had cramps and ewcm from cd5. So likely my cycle will be shorter.

Sorry you're both in a similar boat @sophied1983 and @Helena112 💜

My AF after my mmc at 12 weeks ended in a chemical pregnancy and but I am towards the end of the second cycle since the mmc now. Both cycles have been much longer than usual (53 days an 45 days, so far!). I also never got pms before the mmc, but now I do notice a lot of symptoms, particularly sore boobs. My period wasn't heavier than normal, however.

sophied1983 · 08/05/2019 16:46

Two days of no bleeding, just been to the loo and period has come back?! So bizarre.

Sorry you're all going through it too :(

I lost my baby 31st March... Yes, mother's day. On the 28th April I had slight spotting just for a few hours but nothing since so not sure if I could class that as a period! T x

Helena112 · 08/05/2019 21:01

Sorry to hear your all going through this :( I have been to the GP expressing my concern with the irregular periods since my loss. all they have advised us a referral back to a gynaecologist. The waiting list is 6 months! so my appointment isn't until October...

sophied1983 · 08/05/2019 21:07

@Mumoftwogirlies - Mother's Day :(

@Helena112 - October. Wow... helpful...

OP posts:
VenusStarr · 08/05/2019 21:29

Thats awful to wait that long @Helena112. I saw a community gynecologist within a month of a referral after my miscarriage. Can you see if that's an option?

Sorry for your loss @Mumoftwogirlies

Sorry you're bleeding again @sophied1983

I hate how there's so much unknown and uncertainty, we're pretty much just left to it. Everything is vague and I feel like I'm just fobbed off.

Sorry we've all lost our babies :(

sophied1983 · 08/05/2019 21:33

It flipping sucks doesn't it.

I now feel like there's a big deadline looming. If we aren't pregnant by September we're going to prioritise moving out of London.

But that means I'm on a countdown and each month feels more and more loaded.

OP posts:
Mumoftwogirlies · 08/05/2019 21:55

Oh no that's awful. The last thing you need when trying to conceive is the added stress of a deadline!

(sorry I'm not sure how to tag people)

Hello Ladies, I’m new to mumsnet so I apologise in advance if I am on the wrong thread.

I wanted a little advice as I have had a mmc on the 14th feb and I am STILL going through it all. I’ve had 2 rounds of medical management and after my 2nd round they scanned me around 10 days later which showed “retained product”. Around 2 weeks later I had a negative test (I thought it was all over) but no.. here I am 12 weeks since my miscarriage started bleeding again. I THINK I passed the “retained product” on Friday and I had a very heavy bleed but I wasn’t sure if it was also my period as it would of been 4 weeks since medical management.

That’s a little bit of my background but today I went to have my bloods done to hopefully be told they were still dropping as they have been through all of this but they’ve gone up! From my last result which was 27 (3 days later I got my home negative test) then today they’ve gone up to 38?! We have had unprotected sex during the weeks I wasn’t bleeding (after all medical management) so now I’m really confused? Why has it risen? Because I’m bleeding. EPU can’t seem to give me any answers and it’s driving me crazy.

This process has been nearly 3 months and were desperately wanting to try for another baby. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and again I apologise if I am on the wrong thread 🙈 x

VenusStarr · 09/05/2019 20:43

@Lea89 I am so so sorry for your loss and that you're having such a difficult time Flowers that's very strange that your blood hcg levels have increased.have they suggested it may be a new pregnancy? I cant imagine how you must be feeling x

How are you @sophied1983?

Lea89 · 09/05/2019 20:51

Hi @venusstarr (not sure if I have tagged you right sorry)

Yes, they have said they want to check but they doubt it would be because my levels have only gone up by around 11 since my last levels were tested about 4 weeks ago. But, I know my levels dropped from 27 because I got a negative home test and they need to be below 25. We ttc again as they advised the retained tissue shouldn’t be an issue and will either absorb or come away in a period if I didn’t get caught straight away.

Plus, I am bleeding (possible period) but I think it’s the retained tissue. So how could I be pregnant if I am bleeding? I’m just sick to death of it all now and I want my body back to normal. I guess I’ll find out on Tuesday when I go back for another scan xx

VenusStarr · 09/05/2019 20:58

I got the tag @Lea89 :)

It's awful that you don't get given any information and just told to come back. I had similar where I was back and forward to the hospital for scans. There's so much uncertainty but you're pretty much left on your own.

I'm surprised they left you with retained tissue, I thought there was an infection risk with that. It possibly is that causing the bleeding. I really hope you get some closure on Tuesday xx

Lea89 · 09/05/2019 21:07

@venusstarr

They advised there was no risk of infection as it was in a protected area - but they still went through the infection side with me and to call if I think I had any symptoms?! - Bizzare!

I just don’t get why my levels have gone up? They were coming down through the whole process and now suddenly up? Although, I did read that between 0-3 weeks of pregnancy your hcg levels are between 5-50. We started ttc around 2.5 weeks ago as I got my negative test just before that and now hcg is 38. Maybe? But I think because I’m bleeding I don’t believe it. Gives you so much false hope.

In my mind I’m thinking ‘maybe I am pregnant again, now my body knows I am it’s getting rid of the retained tissue from my body’ but at the same time I think ‘nahhh that won’t be right’ - head is just all over the place! X

VenusStarr · 09/05/2019 21:12

It's horrible you've got a wait over the weekend @Lea89. I hope it is a new pregnancy for you. I guess a scan at this stage won't confirm though. Will they redo the bloods next week? Can totally relate to the over thinking and not being able to switch off. It's OK to have hope, i guess that's how we keep going xx

Lea89 · 09/05/2019 21:19

@venusstarr

Yes, I think there going to re-do bloods. I’ll be pushing for them anyway if they say no. It’s my body and I want to know what the hell is going on! I was thinking the same, a scan wouldn’t confirm anything yet so only bloods will give me the answer I need. I think there scanning me to see if the retained tissue has passed - I am so hoping it has. I thought I had passed it after 2nd round of treatment and then another scan confirmed it was still there!! This time, I hadn’t bled for 3 weeks and suddenly on Friday last week I had a big red bleed and a large jelly like sac/clot came away from me so I’m more than sure it was that. Knowing my luck it will still be there 😩 xx

CelavieAnnie · 09/05/2019 21:24

Sorry to hear you are all going through this! 💐

@Lea89 Its just over 6 months since my mmc and like you I went through two rounds of medical management with retained tissue at the end. It was so minimal that the medical team were happy to let naturally come out with my next period (sorry if tmi).So the retained tissue can simply come with your period as far as I understand.

It is totally exhausting mentally and physically to have it draw out this long.

My period returned around a month after the bleeding from the miscarriage completely stopped and they have been pretty regular as in starting around the same time but definitely the heaviness of flow and length has changed for me. xx

Lea89 · 09/05/2019 21:28

Hi @celavieannie I’m so sorry to hear you went through similar to myself ❤️

Can I ask, how did you know it was your period? Was it a constant heavy bleed? I’ve been bleeding since Friday last week and it’s been light, then heavy, red, then brown. So intermittent! X

CelavieAnnie · 09/05/2019 21:42

@celavieannie I had a considerable gap of about a month then bled for about a 6/7 days. It was definitely similar to what you’re experiencing. If you are concerned check in with you doctor for sure but they do say to expect possible irregularities (if that makes sense).

My next period came a month later so that confirmed it was my cycle starting up again.

Such a hard thing to go through xxx

Lea89 · 09/05/2019 22:33

@celavieannie

Yeah it really is isn’t it. I’m just not sure if it is my period? I’ve had all the pains but with the bleed being heavy then light I’m not sure? EPU said ‘it will be very heavy and clotty’ sorry TMI! But because I’m expecting that I’m not entirely sure if it is my period xx

CelavieAnnie · 10/05/2019 00:26

I understand, it is hard to know.

I think I was told to expect the same but certainly don’t remember anything particularly horrendous during my first period.Then again the mmc itself was so bad at times that everything after that happened after wasn’t even close in comparison!
Maybe because you have been bleeding for so long already the period isn’t as heavy.
As long as you feel physically well without major concerns (very heavy bleeding or a fever). Just take note of it all over the next few days and then arrange a doc appointment to put your mind at ease. Xx

Lea89 · 10/05/2019 08:00

@celavieannie

I think your right. I have been expecting this huge heavy period and it’s been nothing compared to the mmc. I was so bad one night I had the paramedics out to me, that was the night I passed the sac 💔 the blood was something I’ve never experienced in my life.

I think this must be my period, I’m 90% sure. Thankyou for your advice as that makes me feel better that you didn’t have the ‘heavy bleed’ that the hospital has been advising xx

sophied1983 · 10/05/2019 15:28

I'm so fed up that this whole year feels like it's been spent on pregnancy/miscarriage. Just want things to pick-up!
