D&C Advice - Missed Miscarriage

Hello

Firstly, sorry - I posted this on the 'pregnancy' section of the website so reposting here.

I'm looking for some advice from anyone that's had a D&C..

Unfortunately, at our 12 week scan on 14 March, we found out that our baby no longer had a heartbeat and had stopped growing at 10 weeks. It was completely heartbreaking for both of us - we'd had no signs whatsoever, my body was still showing all signs of being pregnant.

I had my D&C on 17 March. I then started bleeding from 20 March - 2 days were quite heavy bleeding with some clots (I'm so sorry if this is TMI!). It's now 10 April and I am still bleeding, it's been quite light throughout but today there's been some really tiny clots and it's got heavier than it has been (still not particularly heavy).

I rang the Early Pregnancy Unit today and they suggested that I phone my GP. I then rang my GP who doesn't seem to know at all, she just said it's unusual to be bleeding for longer than 7 days, even more unusual to be bleeding over 14 days (I'm now on day 21!) - she's going to phone the EPU and try to get some more advice.

I was wondering if anyone else has had prolonged bleeding following a D&C and whether it's normal!?

Thank you x

P.S. I also got pneumonia so was admitted to hospital on 27 March.

Hi Sarah, sorry you're going through this. I had a D&C for a MMC on 29th March and had barely any bleeding after. On day 8 post-op I started bleeding, went for a scan on Tuesday this week and they confirmed a small amount of retained product, so I had medical management (tablets inserted vaginally) on Tuesday, it didn't work, so had a second dose orally last night, hasn't worked, so I need to be rescanned on Tuesday and have a second surgery if the tissue is still there, but they will use a camera or ultrasound to guide them.

I was told when I had my D&C that I will prob bleed after but it should trail off and not get worse after about a week, hence why I contacted the hospital when I started bleeding on day 8.

I would suggest you call emergency gynae (they should be there 24hrs a day) or the EPAU and tell them that the bleeding is getting worse and that you're worried about retained products and infection. They will hopefully get you in for a scan and see what's going on, and maybe give you some antibiotics. I'm sorry this is happening. It's an absolutely shit time isn't it. Let me know how you get on calling the hospital.

Sorry for the delay in responding to you!

I contacted the EPAU and they brought me in for a further scan. I basically had a big blood clot left, but my womb was closing 'nicely'. So I just had to wait it out. I was bleeding for a total of 36 days in the end. Have just started my first 'proper' period today so will see how this one goes (usually only 5 days long).

Thanks for your help.
