Irregular sac

Today I went for a early reassurance scan.

I came off the pill in December and had my first and only period on 5th Feb. Therefore can't fully date a pregnancy.

I had the scan on what is assumed 6 weeks and have been told to return in 10 days to double check but be prepared for the worst.

The sac was irregular in shape and there is a possible yolk sac.

Any one else been in this situation? And is the worst definitely the worst.

Thanks in advance

Hi @CuriousC32,
Sorry to hear that your scan was not what you expected. I think it's really hard to tell at this early stage as if you are a few days off with your dating (as you very well could be) it has a tremendous impact on what you can see on the scan.

Did they give you any measurements of the sac etc? Was it an internal or external scan?

The uncertainty is the worst, sorry that you have to go through this!

They did an external and an internal scan. Nothing picked up on external.

The internal scan picked up the irregular shaped sac and the yolk sac is present.
Which gives that little glimmer of hope if it's just too early. Based on conception dates I am either just approaching 5 weeks or nearly 7 weeks. I have read stories on the internet that sac's can change shape... again that little glimmer of hope however have prepared for the worst - That when I go back to on 3rd April nothing will have changed/grown and il be referred to the early pregnancy unit to get the tablets for a miscarriage.

The reality is hard but just trying to accept it now and move on.

Hi @CuriousC32
April 3rd is a long way to wait. Is there any way you can get in somewhere earlier for a follow up?

The doctors may want you to wait that long so they can be 100% confident it is a miscarriage before they offer you options - but you should be able to get an answer before that point as to whether or not it's viable, especially if you have the measurements from your first scan available. It may be worth looking into options for later this coming week if you can't bear to wait?

From what I have read, an irregular shaped gestational sac is not a good sign (which you already know) but at the same time all of the positive outcome stories I have heard have been from people who were not as far along as they thought they were, so if dating the pregnancy is hard then there is still some semblance of hope.

For me, I found it most useful to prepare myself for the bad news and choose to be surprised if it worked out for me (it didn't, and I was as prepared as I could've been, although it doesn't take away the hurt). I found the waiting for confirmation so difficult, I felt like I was going crazy at the end of it. I hope you are able to find answers soon.

Just for an update following on from when I started this post. I went back for my second early scan to confirm 'the worst' and by some miracle there was a heartbeat. The sac had changed shape and was now regular. I was earlier along that I had thought. Several weeks on I am now 10.5 weeks pregnant. Thank you for your support

Fantastic news! This thread appeared on ‘active’, so I came on to say that I’ve just dropped my ‘irregular sac’ at his first ever overnight camp with Beavers.

The measurements being dealt with are so small, and the angles can be deceptive.

I’m so pleased to see that you had a happy update though, so wish you a lovely pregnancy x
