Question regarding baby loss and induction

Hi, a family member sadly lost her baby this week very near her due date. Is it normal for her to be left for days inbetween her finding out she'd lost the baby and them taking her into hospital to be induced? the only experience I have had of a loss so far into pregnancy was when I was little and my mum lost a baby. They took my mum straight in as soon as they found out. I'd of thought if they couldn't admit her to the hospital for induction straight away or even the next day, they should of referred her to another hospital? I just think its cruel sending her home for days :(

That does seem really unfair. 😟

There could be any number of reasons that she hasn't been admitted yet . Maybe medically it's best for her to give her a chance to go into labour on her own or maybe she wants the time to process it all ? Everyone's circumstances are different and that's why anyone who sadly finds themselves in this situation will have different options presented to them .

Have her waters broken? If so they shouldn't hang around. I have heard via my old sands group of women whose waters hadn't broken being sent home then asked to come in the next day. It seems cruel to me but they prioritise babies with a chance if there is bed or staff shortage. I had to wait some hours (but in hosp) waiting for anaesthetist to talk to me.

Please also direct your family member to SANDS if you feel able.

Hi, Juniorcakeoff no they hadn't broken. I think the next day is fair enough if they don't have beds but it was 5 days :( I will direct her to SANDS if she hasn't been already thankyou.

Thankyou for the replies

Hi wow five days does seem totally over the top. We sadly lost our dd in September, we found out on the Monday and induction started on Wednesday. They gave me some kind of tablet to turn off placenta on the Monday and apparently it takes a few days for that to work. I was at 27 weeks so cervix was also slammed shut so the couple of days with that tablet apparently helps.
We used the time to try and get our heads around what was about to happen, in some ways I am kind of glad I got those few days to spend with her still inside me 'safe' from all the next decisions etc we had to make. It is an overwhelming time and anything you can do with helping them find SANDS etc will be great. But just being there to listen to them, to hear her birth story, to talk to them about who the baby looked like will be great for them too. Trying to remember that in all the trauma they just had a baby and to them that baby is perfect and wonderful and they will more than likely want to talk about that.
I hope that helps. You sound like a lovely friend, just try to do what you can and it will be appreciated.
I remember every single person who tried.

Sorry for your loss. I was given a tablet and told it takes time for it to work and if it didn't work in 28hr to come back. So they could admit me and give stronger medicen to induce me. However, they were very clear with me that I could return earlier or even ask them straight away to start the next step. I said I wanted to go home and I returned two days later. Dh phoned ahead to see if a bed was available, which it was. It still took me few more days to give birth. No heart beat was seen when I was 35weeks +2days. I gave birth when I was 36weeks. It takes me a long time to give birth and intervention was offered to speed up labour further, like giving me hormone drip. But I said no, I was aiming for vbac and wanted to avoid the contraction pain I felt during my first birth caused by the drip. So I asked them to give me the full amount of tries available for the tablet they were inserting. Sorry I do not remember the names of the medicen they gave me.
