Early miscarriage/PUL advice

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting although I have been an avid reader for the last couple of months - I would really appreciate your advice/input.

As background, I already have a DC from a previous marriage.
DH and I were lucky enough to conceive on our first cycle of trying last year. However it all went wrong when I started having some light spotting on Christmas Day, when I was 7 weeks.

I went to the EPU on 27th Dec and despite positive urine and bloods, they couldn’t locate the pregnancy, so I was told I had a ‘pregnancy of unknown location’ and would need to come in for weekly bloods as they can’t be 100% that it isn’t ectopic. My HcG levels that day were 700. A week later they were 450 and I’m due to go back for another blood test in 3 days.

I have been waiting for the ‘heavy period with cramping’ etc that seems to be the norm for an early miscarriage, but it has never happened. All I have had is brown/black discharge (sorry for the tmi) which has never needed more than a panty liner. I don’t wear anything at night. My periods haven’t been heavy since my first DC, however I would normally have at least 1-2 days of proper, red bleeding so what I have experienced over the last 2 weeks can’t even be compared to a period, let alone a heavy one.

The emotional upset has subsided (as much as it ever can) and we are anxious to resume TTC but I am concerned that this is going to carry on for weeks. Is it possible to have a complete miscarriage without having a lot of bleeding/pain or will I likely need a D+C? OR could this be a sign that the pregnancy is ectopic?

Any insight or advice would be gratefully received! Smile

Anyone have a similar experience they can share, or advice?

Hi. Firstly sorry you're experiencing this. I'm currently going through a very similar experience having been diagnosed with a PUL at just over 7 weeks. I've also had a previous early miscarriage at about 5 1/2 weeks and in neither case have I had the really heavy bleeding and pain that I've heard other people talk about in relation to a miscarriage.

With my PUL the bleeding started 02/12 and I bled for 2 weeks. It wasn't heavy but was continuous, very much like a period. After a couple of weeks I've now had a second episode of bleeding which has been going on for about a week. I don't think this can be my period because my HCG levels are still high enough for me to be 'pregnant'.

I don't really have any advice other than to suggest you ask about your concerns when you go for your next bloods but I hope it helps to hear another experience and to know that you're not alone.

Thank you MrsMoose, I really appreciate your response. It’s reassuring to know that I’m not the only one to not experience ‘typical’ symptoms. I’ll make sure I take a list of questions to my next appointment, now the mental fog has started to lift I suddenly have a tonne of things to ask. Thanks again and I’m so sorry for your losses x
