Pain and discomfort 3 weeks after miscarriage

Hello. I had a miscarriage 3 weeks ago - it happened naturally. I had an internal scan last Tuesday which confirmed that internally, everything looked as it should. I’ve been having stomach cramps for the last week and they are getting worse. I’ve been feeling nauseas again since last Thursday: the nausea had gone away after 6 days. My back is also really sore.
Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and could shed some light on it?

Hi Ladies,

You have no idea how reading all your posts has helped me so much. I have been in tears for days. I fell pregnant (fist time) and the baby stopped growing at 9 weeks, took the medication to pass the tissue. They did a scan a week later and still had sone tissue left so I took the meds again and passed all the tissue. So its all out now. After that I had a bad UTI and Kidney infection which is all cleared up now. My problem is that 4 weeks after the miscarriage I am having ongoing bad pains in my lower abdomen and back, my legs go numb sometimes and I get aching in my groin area. I can't sleep on my sides some nights because its sore. The severity of the pain comes and goes, sometimes I want to vomit. I have been checked by the doctors on numerous occasions (they are so sick of me) and they said that this is just what happens, You are in pain for some time afterwards and theres no explanation for it. I thought they were talking nonsense and I have been driving myself mad googling what could be wrong with me. Finding this site has saved my life. I haven't had my period yet.. still waiting for it. I had such crazy pain yesterday and thought I was going to get it but didn't. I have another check up with the Gynie on Monday just to double check all is ok. Thank you all for sharing your stories. I live aboard away from all my Family and Friends and i have been feeling so alone and scared.

Guildy · 20/08/2020 07:26

This is the same thing that is happening to me. Its so scary. I couldn't sit the whole day. Sharp pain on my right side. I had a hot water bottle and painkillers and just cried. I tjought something was badly wrong.

s4r4h84 · 03/11/2020 14:22

@Chika200 I am in the same boat as you: I had a miscarriage of 16 weeks found out three weeks ago, and my world has been turned upside down ever since. Just as you have described, I am also in a lot of pain. I keep worrying I have an infection my stomach is so sore and my lower back and my legs. I can’t pinpoint one exact area where it’s coming from it’s just seems to be my whole lower abdomen. Hopefully it is normal, but it is a very distressing for us both to have to deal with this as well as our emotional pain.

Fra30 · 11/11/2020 00:31

Hi everyone, hope you are all well. I recently miscarried (horrible experience)! :( . 7 weeks. I never had an d&c or anything, they let it happen naturally. I have had a healthy normal period since and I am experiencing no unusual bleeding or discharge. But have started experiencing strange pains, like dull stabbing pains in my lower abdomen. Quite worried to be honest. I see some people have had similar experiences. Suppose I am just seeking some reassurance. F.

RachieK14 · 11/11/2020 19:27

Hi Ladies,
I just want to thank you all for sharing. I had a medical miscarriage 9 weeks ago now. Twin baby girls. To say my husband and I were devastated would be an understatement. It was our first pregnancy so we have no other children. However, I then had to have a D&C three weeks ago (22nd October) as there was substantial tissue etc left. I experienced some pain and discomfort in the two days after the D&C (and I had the obvious bleeding). Then after 10 days I started to get this dull ache. A heavy or full sensation. I was worried that I had an infection as the Doctor had not said anything about this happening. I left it a week to see if it would go but then I called the hospital. They checked me over and did a pregnancy test which was negative so my HCG levels have finally dropped. They did a spectrum check and said that nothing looked infected which is good. That was Monday just gone (9th November) and I'm still having the cramping feeling. If anything it has gotten worse and the weird thing is that it seems to move. It started off in the centre of my lower abdomen, yesterday it felt like it was more to the left and today it's on the right side and definitely feels worse than it did yesterday. Like I said, the doctor who did my D&C did not even mention that I may get feelings when my uterus shrinks back down. It's only by doing my own online research and also finding this thread that it's helped to put my mind at ease a bit. I'm hoping it is just my uterus going back to normal now that my body has registered that I am no longer pregnant. However, I am not sure what I will do if I still feel like this in a weeks time.
I hope everyone on here has gone on or will go on to have successful pregnancies. This has been the most devastating experience of my life. I just want to get my period and be able to start trying again.

Hi,

I know the title is for further three + weeks but I found out my baby had stopped growing last week and after scans that sac was very comfortable where it was and didn’t want to naturally vacate so my partner and I decided to go down the medication routine. I had the procedure yesterday, (TMI, I know) minimal bleeding just large clot that had to be passed on the toilet as they wouldn’t pass otherwise. I was told it would be bad period pains. They sooo lied to me. Anyway the pain went this morning but has since come back but the bleeding has stopped.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Magnoliamoment · 16/01/2021 21:37

Hello everyone, I realize this thread is old but somehow may of us continue to find it for reassurance and comfort. I am wondering if those of you who have had lower pelvic area pinching and aching pain on both left and right sides, if that pain eventually went away?

I had a medically managed Miscarriage 2.5 weeks ago and had the normal cramping and bleeding. However, about 2 days after the miscarriage I began to feel a sharp pain in my right and left pelvic area (thought it was my Ovaries) last week (2 weeks post mc) I had an ultrasound and they said there was no left over tissue and everything looked completely normal. They could not explain the pain. Today I still feel the pain, pinching and aching in various spots on and off all day and sometimes side back pain. I also feel extremely bloated but no gas.

Has anyone else experienced this post miscarriage? Did anyones symptoms disappear with time? This loss is enough to handle emotionally but now having this scary pain and discomfort is a lot to add :(

Lizbb · 18/02/2021 06:30

@Magnoliamoment hi hun..also saw the thread because of what I'm experiencing. Very similar to yours infact. I had a mc at the end of jan. It was natural and negative teat around 2 plus weeks, my hcg is now showing faint lines but I've read can take a while to drop. I mc at 11 wk. From yesterday I started to experience tension or pain in lower abdomen and back. Really sharp here and there. Had to ho sleep during my work break yesterday. From what I've read the uterus is shrinking back to size and can take a week before the pain goes. I also feel bloated. Read in a medical article to take fibre and the uterus is shrinking. There are under underlying issues that can cause the pain like infection. Stress. Etc. I'm gonna call gp later today.

Coocoo2 · 20/02/2021 18:23

Hi everyone I just wanted to say this forums been really helpful, I have just had a medically managed miscarriage and whilst the cramping has gone I have weird soreness in my abdomen under my rib cage and a sore back. It all comes and goes but is scaring me but it sounds like lots of other people have felt this too.

MrsOC009 · 23/02/2021 17:45

Hi ladies I had a mmc at 9 weeks and had my d&c last Thursday at 12+1. I have had light bleeding since but seems to have stopped today but have had a pulling pain low down on the right side. Especially when I sit down a certain way or sometimes when I move.. does this sound similar to what ye have experienced.. my hips and legs are sore too but that possibly for tireness as had not been sleeping great. My anxiety is bad at the best of times but im panicking so much the last week its making it so much worse

Coocoo2 · 23/02/2021 18:16

Hey, I just got an alert about your comment - I just recently posted above. I went to the hospital about these pains today as they are pretty bad sometimes. An ultrasound showed I have a cyst on my right ovary which is twisting and causing the pain. The cyst won’t go away until my body recognised the pregnancy has ended, and I also found out the pills I took did not work 100 so I have to have a D & C. Hopefully after that the cyst will shrink and that pain goes too. This is just what happened to me but maybe will help you? Did they see any cysts on the scans?

MrsOC009 · 23/02/2021 18:41

No I had a scan Tuesday and checked ovaries and had another measurement before the d&c and nothing was mentioned. Its not constant but just annoying at times. Im 5 days after d&c so guess will just have to see if it eases over the next few days.. doesn't help that I'm over analysing everything

Magnoliamoment · 25/02/2021 15:44

Hi everyone,

Just an update, after my first period (4 weeks after mmc) the pain in my ovaries and pinching and aching around pelvic and lower back definitely went down. I also started hormone balancing supplements and gentle exercise, and stress relief after my period. I had a few weeks with little to no pain! However, last week (3 weeks after first period) I had a very stressful week and all the pain has returned (bloating, aching, pinching in pelvic, nerve pain in thighs and glutes) It is very evident to me and my naturopath that stress and cortisol is directly related to the pain in my pelvic area. Therefore most of my pain is most likely due to a hormone imbalance after the miscarriage as I have been learning that our hormones, gut and stress are all connected. This is just my journey and story and might not be the same for everyone but just wanted to share some of my experiences. Wishing everyone health and wellness on this journey.

Coocoo2 · 13/03/2021 11:01

I just wanted to add I have kept coming back to this forum to see if other people had the same symptoms as me. I tried a medical miscarriage which didn’t work so I had a D&C two and a half weeks ago. A few days ago I felt great no pain anymore but now it’s come back with a strange strong pain low in my abdomen near my hip (feels like where my ovaries are) and my leg is a little numb. Sometimes the pain is around other place but today it’s quite strong as described. The doctor things everything looks good but it’s hard to deal with all these changing pains every day when I was not told it could go on for so long: I’m wondering from others here did it eventually stop and did you go on to have a healthy pregnancy?

Looby99 · 22/03/2021 23:28

Hi Coocoo2, I've just come across this thread as going through a similar situation. I had a mmc and had the MVA procedure 2 weeks ago. Bleeding and cramping stopped after a couple of days, I started feeling better so began exercising (really helped take my mind off things!) But I think I over did it and started spotting and getting sharp abdominal pains. Tonight I've had lower back ache, and pains in my thighs too so decided to Google.. Reading this thread it seems it may not be exercise related as I thought and something that seems to happen to lots of people! Has your pain subsided now? I hope it has.
Sending love to everyone on this thread going through these painful experiences, it's really helped me to hear your stories so thank you xx

Coocoo2 · 23/03/2021 19:07

Hey Loony99, I’m sorry to hear you’re having pain, I know how it is and it’s awful. Also when it moves and goes into legs etc - and just so hard to explain to anyone else.

I’m coming up to 4 weeks since the operation and I feel finally good now - I do not have any pain. I would say I did have pain on and off and moving around different areas until about 3 weeks post. I did try to go for a jog at 2 weeks and it got worse afterwards so I stopped and only just tried a first light jog today - no pain! I also asked my doctor about all this and why I wasn’t told this could go on for so long - apparently hospital staff don’t see the ongoing care part of recovery so don’t really see how long it takes to recover and my doctor said what i experienced is normal - for a lot of ppl it just takes longer than you think to recover. Maybe also because I first tried the pills and then had the operation so my body went through a lot.

I found hot water bottles helped a lot, only slow walking for exercise and lots of stretching.

Randomly I found that lying on my back and lifting my hips up as high as possible and staying there a few minutes helped somehow stretch out some of the pain. Maybe this will help you.

I really feel for you and hope it goes away soon. sending love your way x

Looby99 · 23/03/2021 19:34

Coocoo2, thanks so much for your reply! You have no idea how reassuring it is to hear of someone in such a similar circumstance.. I am so pleased to hear that your pain has finally gone.
I also didn't get told about any form of ongoing pain - I was just asked to contact EPU/A&E if I experienced any infection type symptoms. I did actually go to A&E a week ago after the pain began and I also started feeling really dizzy. They just told me it was my body reacting to the trauma it had been through.
I am hopeful now after your reply that another couple of weeks and I should be recovered! Fingers crossed :) the emotional toll is hard but for our bodies to go through such an onslaught as well, it just makes things twice as difficult.

Take care and wishing you well x

Coocoo2 · 23/03/2021 19:52

No worries, I was the same and trawling through these forums trying to find people who had experienced the same thing. It helped to know I wasn’t the only one with these random pains. I want to help give back to other people who are going through the same. The whole thing is just so awful and residual pain doesn’t help you move on mentally.

I hope things start to improve, I would give yourself another week - I know it’s so hard to just rest and be patient! But luckily it is winter and lockdown for me not sure where you are so it was not so hard! Sending healthy wishes and hope we have good news with another pregnancy soon 😘

Coocoo2 · 23/03/2021 19:54

Oh but yeah try the hips up stretching. Like in bridge position with feet on the floor and lifting up like in yoga!

Looby99 · 23/03/2021 20:15

I will definitely try the hips thing tonight!! The pain tends to travel to lower back/thighs in the late evenings so that's a great one to know.
I'm in lockdown too and working from home so I spend the vast majority of my time under a blanket on the sofa!! Sometimes we need to don't we ❤ I hope you have some good news very soon! x

Luciferlooloo · 04/05/2021 17:31

Help please. I had a miscarriage on the 10th March. I only stopped bleeding last week and still had a faint positive pregnancy test last week. I've already been back to the early pregnancy unit 3 weeks ago for another scan but they said they can't find any remaining tissue. I have to do another test on Friday and if still positive then they'll have me back in for another scan. The last 4 days I've had lower abdominal and pelvis pain which seems to be getting worse, I'm worried I may be getting an infection. I'll be making a doctor's appointment tomorrow but wondered if anyone else has had positive pregnancy tests 8 weeks a miscarriage? Xx

Looby99 · 04/05/2021 18:23

Hi Luciferlooloo

I am so sorry to hear of your loss :(

I can't relate in terms of the positive pregnancy test, however I did have quite strong abdominal and back pain for a long time afterwards. I had my procedure at the end of February, and I just got my period back 2 weeks ago which is when I've finally started feeling normal again. I had on and off pain for a long time, it was worrying but from reading this thread I think it is quite common.

I really hope your pain settles soon, and you are able to get some answers from your GP re the positive test.

Take care xx

Luciferlooloo · 04/05/2021 18:35

Hi Looby99, thank you for replying. I'm also sorry for your loss. I think it's made harder by the fact it drags on.
I'm glad you're feeling better xxx
