Non-doubling hcg: anyone had this?

I have hcg that is rising but nowhere near doubling. I know that this is going to lead to a miscarriage.

I am incredibly worried that the early pregnancy unit will simply scan me, and send me away to come back next week for another scan because 'it might be too early'.

I know my dates are correct because I've been having hcg tests since 13 dpo ... so I can't be further behind than I am.

I just want to get the miscarriage over with - do you think there's any chance that they would decide it wasn't a viable pregnancy based on hcg alone, and allow me to undergo medical management?

I have miscarried 3 times before. Expectant management does not work for me e.g. it took 4 weeks before I started bleeding with after a hcg level of 12 had been recorded. Currently I'm at 2000 (6 weeks 'pregnant').

I'm really sorry. Have they tested your progesterone levels, are they monitoring you in case it is ectopic?

To the best of my knowledge they won't do anything at this stage. They simply can't until they can be more certain than not that the pregnancy is not viable.

Thank you for your condolences Flowers

No, I haven't had any scans - due my first appointment at the unit on Saturday morning. I have shoulder pain but frankly all of me is in pain at the moment (I think I'm getting a virus). The GP checked my blood pressure and poked my abdomen and said it was unlikely to be an ectopic. My GP is the one who has kindly been letting me get the hcg levels tested because of my miscarriage history.

I think if the medics were able to produce a single bit of evidence that viable pregnancies result from hcg doubling rates like mine then I'd be happy to wait. Unfortunately they won't be able to do that!

I'm tempted to get the shoulder pain thing checked out tomorrow now you've mentioned it though ...

Unfortunately slow rising HCG is likely to be an ectopic. Certainly was for me.

As you have shoulder tip pain, please go to A and E

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 13/09/2017 21:57

Sorry to hear of your ectopic HTKB.

Does it make a difference if it started off doubling but then stopped? So it was:
61
153 (48 hrs later)
538 (72 hrs later)
1577 (4 days later)
1677 (3 days later)
2000 (today; 2 days later)
Would that make you suspicious of ectopic? Sorry if that's too much detail!

Absolutely yes it would. I am a midwife, so not a huge expert but vaguely knowledgeable, and yes it would.

HTKB · 13/09/2017 22:01

A miscarriage should double, possibly stall, then fall. A slow rise should always be investigated.

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 13/09/2017 22:06

Okay, thank you. My GP is lovely but I have been guiding her on how to interpret the hcg values so I doubt she would spot this herself.

I can't get to A and E tonight because I'm on my own with 3 kids asleep downstairs. Will do my very best to get there tomorrow morning - I don't want to waste their time though and the pain isn't severe, just there.

Hmmm. Please try and go tonight. 2000 implies a sizeable structure, and if it ruptures.....
So sorry to hear this btw. X

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 13/09/2017 22:26

Thanks HTKB. Just phoned my DH (who is himself a GP) and his response: "you'll be fine, they never rupture this early anyhow!"

I would like to stress that my DH would clearly treat an actual patient with more professionalism and caution, and would make the correct referrals Grin

First thing tomorrow I will go, I promise - and I will update once I know where the pregnancy of unknown location is / isn't ...

Ok. sure all will be fine. Any one sided pelvic pain straight there though!

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 13/09/2017 22:59

Thank you. And especially thanks for replying ... feeling very down and a friendly 'voice' on mumsnet makes the world of difference x

It's TOTALLY crap isn't it.

We left my ectopic to self resolve in the end. Took 12 weeks. Then another miscarriage four months later. Then six weeks later, another BFP and DS2 is now 18 months old. The whole thing is now just a distant memory. Hard to believe it happened sometimes.

This too shall pass, basically x

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 14/09/2017 16:34

Waited more than 6 hours at gyne ward (having gone to emergency dept first) to be told no scan possible. No-one took blood or examined my abdomen. Gave up in the end and now going home :(

That's so shit, I'm so sorry.

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 14/09/2017 18:42

Feeling so overwhelmingly sad and defeated. Our NHS is great for those major emergencies but just totally overwhelmed and underfunded and crap for this sort of thing.

HTKB · 14/09/2017 22:37

FFS. Most gynaes are so clued up on ectopics.

It's late now but would your DH not put a call in to the gynae reg tomorrow and have a professional chat? I know in this situation we would sneak a doctors wife in for a quick look.

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 16/09/2017 19:18

Update: scanned this morning and it is intra-uterine; such a relief. Definitely not viable (Just a sack with tiny yolk and I'm 6+2 and certain of my dates). Have to go back next Sat for follow up scan and management if necessary. I'm bleeding and it's getting heavier so hoping that maybe it resolves on it's own...

I’m 4 weeks today and my hcg isn’t doubling last Tuesday was 130 then Thursday was 181 then Monday was 390 but my progesterone is in the middle so not low and now high . This happened last year and I went up to 8 weeks got a gear eat and fetus then lost it 😔 had two scans and they don’t know if there’s a sac but got to go back Friday for another scan . No cramps or bleeding just basic sickness and tiredness and constant weeing, could this go on to be a healthy pregnancy or is it more likely I’m going to miscarriage again or have an ectopic pregnancy please help guys! Need to hear success stories and I’m praying there’s some Miricle and hope!!
