MTHFR Gene Mutation | Dr Shahata | Folic Acid
12

LunaB · 13/07/2017 20:40

I've had a few miscarriages so went to see Dr Shahata at The Miscarriage Clinic who did a full blood panel and discovered (amongst other things) I have the MTHFR gene mutation, which means that I cannot absorb Folic Acid in its synthetic form (the form that's in all the preg vits etc.)...

To remedy this, Dr S prescribed an additional Folic Acid supplement of 5,000mg (in addition to the 400 in my Pregnacare vits) but I'm doubting this is the correct advice - as everything I've read states that it makes no difference how much Folic I pump into myself; my body and any future baby simply won't receive it.

SO, after all this reasesrch I've found that a bioavailable (pure) form of Folic Acid, called l-methlyfolate, could be the best solution as my body could absorb this form of the Folic.

Also, apparently this mutation also causes malabsorption of vitamin B12, so I found a different type of preg vits that in addition to containing the recommended 400mg of the l-methlyfolate version of the Folic Acid also contain a form of methyl-B12 which is supposed to help the body use l-methlyfolate...

Now obviously this issue isn't causing the miscarriages (it's something else), but the fact I can't absorb Folic Acid is worrying as it's so vital to conception and pregnancy.

Anybody else have any knowledge or advice on this issue!?

I'm confused and don't want to go against the doctor who's supposed to be helping me, but I just feel that I'm right!!

smile

Hi Luna. Sorry for your losses. There's a thread in conception with ladies on dr s's treatment plan.

I'm about to have my second DD on his plan after 3 miscarriages. I was only heterozygous for the mthfr mutation but I still took methylfolate as a precaution. Dr s didn't tell me not to and , in all honesty, he can't object if he doesn't know. You're still following his instructions if you take a higher dose of the methylfolate.

Come join the thread and good luck with your treatment x

I took folate (natural form of folic acid) throughout pregnancy - not sure if that helps you! Good luck xx

Thank you ladies!

Snoopy, I'm sorry you've suffered - but great you are with Dr S as well! I'm a bit intimidated by him... I want him to like me so he takes care of me - but then I feel wierd about this 5g Folic he precribed and ruined me with!

Again I'm confused about dose - you both take 800mcg, then others take a whopping 5g dose... how do I know what to take?

Plus, what other vits are you on?

Hi Luna I've been wondering about this too as I'm also heterozygous for MTHFR. Could I ask the name of the pregnancy vitamin you take with body-ready B12? Thank you

Hi Laurel, in the end i decided upon the Thorne Basic Prenatal - it has a nice big dose (1g) or Folate. My doctor also finally got on board and said this will be great and I should take for all pregnancy and during breastfeeding too πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ

@LunaB please could you help me, I have the MTHFR gene mutation as well and I saw your post from last year. I found Thorne basic prenatal on internet and I want to buy some. Did you stop takeing Pregnancare max, omega 3 and vitamin D3 2000ui (as initially recommended by mr s) and just took Thorne basic prenatal? Sorry I don’t know what to do and no help from any doctors
