Missed miscarriage at 12 week scan

Im new here and looking for advice. I had a scan at 7 weeks after IVF to see a healthy heartbeat yet at my 12 week scan there was just an empty gestational sac. My nausea and fatigue seemed to just stop at ten weeks and I just thought that the placenta had taken over but in the back of my mind I think I knew something wasn't right. As I had no bleed whatsoever I just carried on and waited for the scan. I'm absolutely devastated and reeling at seeing the empty scan and hearing "I'm so sorry there's no baby". Has anyone been through this before as I've never heard of emby just vanishing??!!😢

Yes, I had the similar with my first pregnancy. Lots of nausea, expected all to be fine at the 12 week scan but there was just an empty sac which was starting to disintegrate.

Sending lots of positive vibes for the future. I went on to have 3 healthy DCs and no further mcs, hope things work out well for you too.x

This happened in my first pregnancy and it was heartbreaking.

I won't lie, I did go on to have further miscarriages, but did finally have a beautiful boy who is now 11.

The same has just happened to me- empty sac at the 12 week scan. Although I hadn't had any earlier scans, so don't know if there was something there in the early weeks. The midwife who scanned me said that your body can sometimes reabsorb the foetus. I'm currently waiting for an ERPC. It was gutting to see an empty sac and I could tell straight away that it wasn't good news, but now I think the miscarriage process of an empty sac might be easier psychologically for me to deal with than a foetus that has passed away. I'm so sorry that you are going through this too.

Thanks for your replies😙xx It's really good to know. I conceived through IVF lite as a single mum and have one Lil frosty left so fingers crossed.
I'll not stop trying til i get there. Just trying to make sense of it all!!

Bubble 77bee, yes I do agree that an empty sac is less traumatic as my bub in now part of me in a weird way but it took me a while to get my head round it. Hope you're ERPC goes OK. I'm waiting to see if nature will do her thing but if no joy will see where to go from there.

Dizzy- ahh, I hadn't thought of it like that- it being part of me now- that's made me smile! Now that I've decided on the ERPC (which I've got to wait 5 days for) I've got my fingers crossed that nature doesn't take it's own course in the meantime- and seeing as it hasn't in the last however many weeks, I'm hoping my body will carry on for a little longer. Really hoping you get a positive outcome in the end with your lil frosty.

Yes this happened to my 2nd pregnancy. And I'd never heard of it either. My pregnancy symptoms lessened but didn't disappear so I had no idea.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Please consider carefully the best way to manage it for you. I found it physically and mentally painful to have a medically managed outcome.

For what it's worth we've gone on to have 2 more successful pregnancies.

How long will it take to shed what is left? Could it be weeks? I've got no idea.
It's terribly hard to get over but so lovely to hear of success stories too!
I hope you hold on too Bubble as it's reassuring to have some control in such an upsetting time x

Agree with Born- I found the medically managed option awful, and it didn't even work. Wish I'd just opted for the surgical ERPC in the first place

If things don't sort themselves out I'll opt for ERPC then. You don't get much info from clinics which is a shame.

Hi Dizzy. So sorry for what you're going through. I had exactly the same thing happen last Monday, although I had a strange feeling that something wasn't quite right. I should have been 12 weeks, the sac measured 7.5 but no sign of a fetus at all. I started bleeding the next day but nothing really kicked off so opted for medical management and went in for this on Sunday. I found the experience far better than i was expecting after reading a lot of opinions on here. The pain was totally manageable for me - just like period pains and only needed paracetamol for it. The bleeding was very heavy, passing lots of large clots but at no point did I feel out of control and the staff on the ward were completely amazing. I had zero pain passing the sac and then the bleeding stopped pretty much straight away. You have to make the right decision for you. It is so difficult when you can't predict the outcome and how you will cope. You'll make the right decision for you whatever it is. Feel free to ask any questions xx

I just want to know when the bleeding will start😯. It seems to take a long time for some and most people seem to need either tablets or a D and C. It's pretty crap not knowing but all I've been told is to do a pregnancy test in three weeks and let theme know the outcome. Could it take longer than three weeks to start bleeding?xx

northernlass81 it's really strange that you just know isn't it? Really sorry for your loss too. Is it your first? It must have been a relief to have had such good staff looking after you as it really helps. I've just found out it can take up to seven weeks to start bleeding once little emby has passed. I'm quite shocked but not too worried now about waiting a few weeks xx

Dizzy - yes really strange. This was my second pregnancy, I have a 2 year old son after a very uneventful pregnancy. Even from the day I got my BFP this time I was worried things weren't right. It seemed to take at least a week for the line to get strong, whereas first time it was strong straight away. I never felt as pregnant this time either. Friends were telling me not to be silly and that each pregnancy is different but I just knew. I waited for 4 days to see if the bleeding would pick up and get heavier after I found out but it didn't so chose the medical route as I was keen just to get it done with. I couldn't really go back to work as a teacher and risk starting to bleed heavily and miscarry at work and I am desperate to get pregnant again and for me, waiting for it to happen naturally was just prolonging this. Luckily it's half term this week so back to work on Monday. Good luck with whatever you choose xxxxx

Sorry for what you're going through. I had a missed miscarriage around a month ago. Had the medically managed option twice. Wouldn't recommend it to anybody. Both were unsuccessful.
My period has finally returned today so finally feel everything is getting back to normal. Its a horrible experience to have to go through.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had two mmcs, both after seeing a good scan and hearing a heartbeat. Utterly devastating. I had surgery both times as I couldn't face it being a long drawn out process or the not knowing if I might start bleeding whilst at work. I would definitely recommend it - quick, relatively painless and enabled me to move on.

Thanks so much for your messages everyone. Big hugs to you all for sharing your experiences. It's awfully hard to get through but with support from people like you it does make it easier. I think I'll give it three weeks tops then phone the clinic to ask for surgical management. I have a little top grade frosty at blastocyst stage in Cardiff so I don't feel the need to rush- though I'd like to try before Sept.

And northern lass you defo just know don't you? I had a chemical.on first iui. Nothing on second and third and mmc now. Just hope this next one comes through for me otherwise it's back to saving up to do if before Xmas! ! Xxx

I'm loads better thank you! I keep a diary and I put all my thoughts and feelings down along with a poem for babies who have passed with the first scan. It kind of allowed me a private service if you like. I also got a book called the emotional guide to ivf which has the stories of 22 women and I remember one saying she would allow herself x amount of time to grieve and do what she wanted then she would move on. I found that really helped and am looking forward now to getting myself healthy again to try for the FET. I haven't started loosing what's inside yet but do know if nothing happens in the next three weeks I will ask for a D and C.
How are you? What time tomorrow are you having the procedure? Xx

I'm ok thanks. A bit of bleeding, but very light, so have fingers crossed that it stays like that until my appointment tomorrow - have to go in at 11am.
