Asprin to prevent recurrent miscarraige

Dear all,

I have just found out that I am pregnant for the 4th time, having experienced 3 miscarriages previously. As you can imagine I am terrified that it will happen again. I have had some tests but they are not all completed and will now need to stop. I have not yet been tested for APS (sticky blood/Hughes syndrome)

I have read a lot of conflicting information about taking baby asprin to try to prevent miscarriage and wondered what other people's thoughts/experiences were of this?

Are there are any risks that have been identified?
does the current research seem to suggest that it can help (I have seen conflicting things)?

I have also suffered 3 miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy. I found out I was pregnant at Christmas and after reading so many positive stories on baby aspirin decided to self prescribe and take it in the hope of a successful pregnancy, however, I sadly went on to miscarry at just under 5 weeks which was much earlier than my previous ones. I would speak to the hospital or your doctors and address your concerns, however, if that isn't the problem you may be doing more harm than good. I've just recently had a full range of hormones testing done at the RMC in my local hospital and hope to have the results in about 10 weeks.

Thanks so much for your message and so sorry to hear about your losses - it is so hard isn't it.

I was really interested to hear your response because I too have read stuff from others saying that asprin helped. It still seems to me that it is uncertain unless you have been diagnosed with a clotting disorder .

I was finally diagnosed with APS after my 8th Mc. I have one DC who survived against the odds before my diagnosis.

I take low dose aspirin daily, and was also prescribed heparin injections, prednisolone (sp?) and high dose folic acid from bfp. I understand that is standard treatment for APS in my area.

Speak to your consultant about the aspirin, OP. I was recommended to take it daily but I have other symptoms besides pregnancy loss. I do feel better on it but I also bruise easily and must be careful with e.g. dental treatment because of prolonged bleeding. Periods are a bit scary now but they were pretty heavy beforehand.

I had two miscarriages last year and when I fell pregnant again I started taking baby aspirin (I hadn't been diagnosed with Hughes syndrome but just felt like I was doing SOMETHING to try and prevent another m/c). I have just found out that I have had anothe m/c so in my case the aspirin didn't help, but I also couldn't find anything online that would've stopped me taking it.

Can't you ask your doctor to test for this while you're pregnant, so you would know for sure?

Thanks for your e mail. Sorry to hear about your losses and hope you are taking care of yourself.

I am not sure about this, but I think being pregnant affects the results of an APS test so they can't do it. Happy to be corrected if others know more

Hi, I so sorry for your losses. I had two losses and decided to start taking baby aspirin, my third pregnancy was successful. I'm not sure if the aspirin made the difference but it was the only thing I did differently. I asked my gp and they basically said it couldn't do any harm so I went ahead. I read conflicting things about when to stop it, some said after 12 weeks but I was too scared so I kept taking it right up until the end.

I'm so sorry for your losses, It's hard and scary to keep going isn't it. I had 7 miscarriages and on the advice of the team at st Mary's recurrent miscarriage clinic took 2 baby aspirin a day (I later had to inject blood thinner as well) even though I only had very slightly raised clotting results. St Mary's have done loads of research and find that taking 2 tablets rather than the generally recommended one has had better results - do check with your Dr first though.... Good luck!
